AFI 2009 JLU Poll
May 1, 2009

The newest JLU poll is now active here at AFI.  A little bit of history.  I went to SDCC 2006 and was surprised by what was revealed.  Instead of the characters I was hoping for, there were some very odd choices and some odd variants.  Then I remembered.

We at AFI had actually discussed, if not requested those very characters.  Nemesis and Sand had come up in discussions of how best to reuse Luthor’s vest.  Classic Aquaman had been described as "Aquaman with 2 hands" and been misinterpreted into the new Aquaman figure we were getting.  Somehow, Mattel needed a clearer vision of what was wanted.  Not just by me, but by the fan community as a whole.

So I came back to RI and started the first poll.  Our winners were:
Male hero: Hawkman
Female hero: Fire
Male Villain: Grodd
Female Villain: Cheetah
All of these have since then been added to the line.

For our second poll, we were told by Mattel that previosuly excluded Charlton and Fawcett heroes could now be made.  Captain Atom, the Question, and Shazam were now all on the table.  These three took the top 3 spots in the poll.  And are now part of the line.

Our 3rd poll showed that the so far unmade top vote getters from the prior polls moved up.  Strangely, for the first time, almost none of the top were shown at SDCC.  However, many  of the secondary choices: Deadman, B’wana Beast, Batman Beyond, Vibe, Commander Steel, and Warhawk were shown there.

Moving to 2009, NYCC showed us a more widespread line, with few characters from the actual show.  Now, as we vote again, we must take the whole of the DC Universe, animated and comic into account in what we want Mattel to know is our MOST WANTED.

Vote in the new Poll

Erik "Superfriend" Skov
"Gathered together from the four corners of the universe." Oh, wait, that's the show, not me. Erik "SuperFriend" Skov never actually got to appear on the show, although he did watch it every week. Erik spent 6 years working for Hasbro in Pawtucket, RI before leaving for a job that paid more (Why else would a collector leave the company that was making Star Wars, Transformers, and while I was there Batman). I used to post all over the net. These days I tend to hang my hat at AFI.

I’m actually looking forward to this poll. I have a feeling that the votes will be a bit more scattered. Yeah, some of the Top 5 or so will be the same, but after that I have a feeling there will be a lot more variety.

I really wish it could be expanded to a 10 male heroes, 10 male villains, 5 females, 15 overall format. I can’t narrow down my choices!!!

    • j1h15233 says:

Make it 10 females as well. Came up with a lot more than I thought I would haha

      • Erik superfriend says:

That is the point. To have you really decide what your TOP choices are. A list of 500 characters tells the manufacturer nothing. A list of 5 tells them what you really want most.

I wish you could enter the poll without logging into the forum.

    Top choice – GYPSY!!!
C’mon Matel, make it happen! Pretty please? I’ll guy two, at least.

Is there a quick and easy link to the last few poll results somewhere? I’d love to see who was chosen, who actually got made and who we’re still waiting for.

There is a link to the 2008 poll right in the blog above. There is a stickied post in the Mattel forum which pointed to all the prior polls, but some of the threads were so old that they were lost.

  • wondering says:

oh yeah i agree with darrel make gypsy and darrell how could you forget about S.T.R.I.P.E and someone answer my QUESTION above

  • Erik superfriend says:

The 6 packs. Only someone from Mattel could give the real answer, but I bet even they would be cagey about it. We at AFi are a collection of toy fans who enjoy talking about toys and trying to get answers to questions just like the one you have. I highly suggest you register for our forum and post questions like this in the Mattel forum.

Specifically, what I know form what others have posted here. Mattel did ship 2 more 6 packs (Villains and League) to Target. Target shipped these to stores in many areas of the country. We know that no one who posts here in the Northeast saw these sets. I’m in Rhode Island and I never saw either. Target is only going to carry this type of product – the 6 pack during the Fall pre-Christmas season, so the next time we might see one (new or old) would be in the Fall.
