AFi 6th Anniversary Scoop Week Day 3

It’s day 3 of AFi’s Scoop Week and this installment is courtesy of our good friends at NECA.

NECA is something of a Cinderella story.  If you think back all the way to their very first venture into the action figure world with their original Beetlejuice line to the amazing and innovative collectibles they produce now, it’s almost impossible to believe they are the same company.  They put together an amazing team led by Randy Falk and now their figures are some of the absolute best on the market.  If you spend any time talking to Randy, you know that he "gets it."  He is dedicated to making kick ass figures and collectibles.  He is dedicated to keeping NECA’s figures in scale to each other and not switch scales on collectors midway into a collection as some companies have done recently.  NECA picks up great licenses, they have fantastic sculptors that crank out amazing portrait work and they have great articulation and accessories. (Their comic book/original Ninja Turtles line is in my top 5 lines of all time).

Our scoop for today is one of NECA’s 2011 San Diego Comic Con Exclusives.  NECA always does great exclusives at SDCC, and it looks like this year will be no exception.   The other great thing about NECA is that they always hold back a chunk of their exclusives for fans that can’t make it to the show and sell them on their store so they are accessible to all.

Today’s scoop is going to kill your with cuteness and awesomeness.  Feast your eyes on:

San Diego Comic-Con Gizmo

From the brand new re-launch of the Gremlins line comes this special edition San Diego Comic-Con Gizmo.
Gizmo comes complete with removable sunglasses to protect himself from the bright lights and the California sun along with a special lanyard badge for his Comic-Con attendance and a tote bag that Gizmo can be placed inside to hide from the Gremlins or from the crowds of fanboys and fangirls in San Diego. Please note – tote bag is not pictured as art is not yet final
Updated image with tote available soon

In case you just skimmed over the text above and got right to the pretty pictures remember these bullet points-

  • Fully poseable – a lot more than you would expect for a figure this size! Including articulated ears!
  •  Movable eyes – this is a feature that typically only shows up on expensive import figures.
  • Comic Con badge and lanyard – COME ON!  How cute is that?  He’s got his own comic con badge!!

If you’d like to see an example of an early prototype of the eye movement on the upcoming Gremlins figures check out this video we shot at the NECA showroom at Toy Fair 2011.

A big thank you to NECA for allowing us to preview this figure as part of our anniversary and keep your eyes on NECA’s Facebook page and Twitter feed as they reveal new stuff and take fans behind the scenes almost every week.

Daniel Pickett
Daniel “Julius Marx” Pickett has been around toys his whole life. The first line he ever collected was Mego’s World’s Greatest Super Heroes line back in the 70s. He has been surrounded by collectables ever since. In 1999 he was confounded by a lack of information and news about some of his favorite toy lines he was collecting. Since he couldn’t find the information he decided to pursue it himself thinking other people might also be interested in the same news. He started writing a weekly column on the toy industry and action figure for a toy news site and in a years time he tripled the sites daily traffic with his updates, reviews and product features. He built relationships with every major toy manufacturer and many sculptors, painters and mold makers. He grew his hobby into a world wide expertise that the industry has embraced. In 2004 he teamed up with his toy buddy Jason “ToyOtter” Geyer and they created their own website Daniel has been quoted in both industry and mass media press outlets. Over the years Daniel and AFi have been sought out as experts in the field. Daniel was regularly featured on “Attack of the Show” on the G4 network as the primary contributor to their “Mint On Card” segment, and our front page has been linked to from USA Today’s “Pop Candy” Blog twice. Daniel’s content has also been featured on,, The Wall Street Journal, The Saturday Evening Post,,,, Boing-Boing,, Ain’t It Cool News, the Official Star Wars blog, Geekologie, G4, CNet and Toy Fare magazine, among many others. He has consulted on toy lines, books, documentaries and TV shows. But all of that really just sounds snooty and “tootin’ his own horn” – the long and short of it is that Daniel loves toys and he LOVES talking about them.
