Daniel Pickett
Daniel “Julius Marx” Pickett has been around toys his whole life. The first line he ever collected was Mego’s World’s Greatest Super Heroes line back in the 70s. He has been surrounded by collectables ever since. In 1999 he was confounded by a lack of information and news about some of his favorite toy lines he was collecting. Since he couldn’t find the information he decided to pursue it himself thinking other people might also be interested in the same news. He started writing a weekly column on the toy industry and action figure for a toy news site and in a years time he tripled the sites daily traffic with his updates, reviews and product features. He built relationships with every major toy manufacturer and many sculptors, painters and mold makers. He grew his hobby into a world wide expertise that the industry has embraced. In 2004 he teamed up with his toy buddy Jason “ToyOtter” Geyer and they created their own website Daniel has been quoted in both industry and mass media press outlets. Over the years Daniel and AFi have been sought out as experts in the field. Daniel was regularly featured on “Attack of the Show” on the G4 network as the primary contributor to their “Mint On Card” segment, and our front page has been linked to from USA Today’s “Pop Candy” Blog twice. Daniel’s content has also been featured on,, The Wall Street Journal, The Saturday Evening Post,,,, Boing-Boing,, Ain’t It Cool News, the Official Star Wars blog, Geekologie, G4, CNet and Toy Fare magazine, among many others. He has consulted on toy lines, books, documentaries and TV shows. But all of that really just sounds snooty and “tootin’ his own horn” – the long and short of it is that Daniel loves toys and he LOVES talking about them.

As a loooong time Captain Action fan & collector, this news sounds extremely interesting. What I could not tell from the announcement was whether beyond the core characters (Captain Action, Action Boy, Dr. Evil & Lady Action), will the same concept of having established super hero costumes & masks that they can wear also be part of this “elite” version. In other words, will the Marvel & DC licenses that were obtained for the regular line also apply to this “elite” line? I can’t tell. If it is done at the same pace as the regular line, then it’s gonna be super slow (i.e., 2 costume sets a year!).
    * Side Note: Hey Ed & Joe, please find a company that can release the Captain Action characters as 6″ super-articulated action figures (akin to Marvel Legends or DC Universe Classics) in addition to the announced 3 3/4″ & 4.5″ retro versions. It would make one of my dreams come true.

  • Daniel says:

I’m not sure how I feel about this..Very happy to hear a top of the line action boy body is coming! More than a little nervous I may have been priced out. well I hope its a success.

Hopefully this doesn’t delay the upcoming DC releases for Captain Action or justice will definitely NOT have been done.

  • Joseph Diaz says:

I am looking forward to this release but at the same time very nerves because these dolls should be made affordable and with a high end body being a main selling point this could get expensive. If this is going to to truly be an elite line of dolls and have the interchangeable costumes they better make sure the masks that go on the head actually fits right and does not make the head look oversized or just lays on the head it better look the part and the fabric for the costumes should be of good quality my take on this is that the actual captain action doll should be no more than 50-75.00 and the costumes should be well designed and full of accessories to truly look and play the part of the characters should be in the 35-50.00 range based on the character and how much detail and accessories go with them.

  • william lee says:

i am also concerned about the cost it needs to be kept affordable. also as someone else said .production needs to be faster than its been.. word of advice stick to the 1/6 scale i dont know ware you came up with that action cat stuff totally a bad idea and the 3/34 stuff really dont worry about what hasbros doing do your own thing . thire dum ideas killed gi joe focus on 1/6 scale market it right customers are happy you make money your happy continue this silly action cat and 33/4 junk captain action will fade away again sorry if i sound harsh but i want to see you succeed best of luck william,

  • john souto says:

i must agree with both mr diaz, and mr. lee, i look forward to this new line, i do hope that the cost will be in reason. will any prototype figure pictures be released anytime year? and what can we expect from this newline of figures? my this endevor be a sucess.

  • Jon Rann says:

I grew up with CA. Until Kenner’s Super Power figures came out in the 80s, CA defined my only superhero toys (sorry…Megos were too…something) I also owned many of the CA accessory sets, like the parachute, flying belt, mobile lab, etc. I believe my mom sold these all off while I was away at college. 😉

I dabbled in the Playing Mantis CA revival, and was disappointed that it faltered…but more disappointed that it sought to replicate the “babyish” problems that might have been forgivable—even charming—in the original line…such as CA’s simian arms!

I bought all the recent CA first-run Silver Age Marvel sets. (Yes they were affordable, and for sale locally…but you completely missed your target demographic. I promise that no 10-12yo boy today has any idea who these characters are, anymore than they’d care to play with dolls.) I found that the (un)usually well-made Marvel costumes were not the best fit on other (better) alternate base figures (although Captain America’s outfit did wind up on an altered Dragon figure), so I had to contend with the new CA base figures. I had to shorten all their forearms by .25″, of course. I had to rework some masks, discard others entirely, replace heads, resculpt, repaint…but my resulting set of “non-babyfied” Marvel heroes was worth it to me. (Er…not much I could do with those “interchangeable right/left boots”…)

Although I have little interest in acquiring yet another Superman, Batman, Joker, Brainiac (well, sorta brainy) figure, I hope CA has solved his BOBBLE HEAD problem with those upcoming DC masks. From the pix I’ve seen, he may have done so.

PLEASE consider interchangeable heads with these Elite figures. Super heroes should be the sole focus…villains second (the Loki figure should have been Daredevil instead, IMO)…don’t lose focus. CA as a character that “becomes other heroes” is a lost cause. Stick with 1:6th scale, and avoid funny animal distractions.

MORE SILVER AGE MARVEL & JACK KIRBY CHARACTERS IN GENERAL! A decent Fantastic Four set? Yes, I’d be willing to pay more for a (much) better base figure (true 12″) from online vendors…but nowhere NEAR $200 for a base figure & one costume. $100 per set would be my limit.

  • Adam Graham says:

I am really looking forward to the high end line, and I hope it is more like the original in design. I loved the
Playing Mantis reboot, but I wasn’t crazy about the Round 2 version, although I love the work being done to keep the Captain going. The high end move is the right way to go: appeal directly to the aging collectors who will go after a higher quality figure. I can’t wait to see the products! Thanks guys, for your continued efforts with Captain Action!
