The AFi/Spy Monkey 2010 Exclusive Accessory Announcement
August 5, 2010

In case you were not able to attend SDCC 2010 here is the announcement of the AFi/ exclusive!

AFi and our good friends at SpyMonkey Creations have come up with an exclusive accessory so DELICIOUS and so WONDERFUL that we think everyone that had a 2010 Club Eternia subscription will want one.

We teased it, we hinted at it, but now we are ready to tell you what we’ve been cooking up!

This exclusive was first announced at the AFi: Behind the Plastic panel at Comic Con 2010, and we had to rush through the announcment a bit because some guy wanted to use the room after us.  Let me tell you the story…

Behind every brilliant idea is a great story.  Here is the story behind our 2010 exclusive accessory:

It was late May when myself, SpyMagician, Flash Ah-ahhh and a visiting Cantina Dan were driving home from the 2010 Anaheim Comic Con, being chauffeured by the lovely Abby.   We were stopping at every Wal-mart and Target on the way home and discussing topics ranging from fallen toy companies to annoying cartoon sidekicks.  In the course of the trip we started riffing on what kind of accessory to do next for SpyMonkey.

Like most great ideas we don’t exactly remember where it came from, we don’t remember who had the initial spark, but someone said something, then someone else said something that sparked it all off, then once the kernel of the idea was out there we all started riffing on it and building the concept and story.  First the idea, then the name, then the bio, then the design.  We just kept riffing  and spit-balling and having a great time.  Each new layer made it even funnier to us.

Then a 3 days later- a prototype!  Then 2 days after that each of us had our own copy of the concept we had created during that Saturday drive. It was even better than we imagined!   The SpyMonkey team knocked it out of the park and it was too good to keep to ourselves.

So, dear AFi readers, it is my honor to present the first ever Action Figure Insider/SpyMonkey Creations exclusive accessory:

Daniel Pickett
Daniel “Julius Marx” Pickett has been around toys his whole life. The first line he ever collected was Mego’s World’s Greatest Super Heroes line back in the 70s. He has been surrounded by collectables ever since. In 1999 he was confounded by a lack of information and news about some of his favorite toy lines he was collecting. Since he couldn’t find the information he decided to pursue it himself thinking other people might also be interested in the same news. He started writing a weekly column on the toy industry and action figure for a toy news site and in a years time he tripled the sites daily traffic with his updates, reviews and product features. He built relationships with every major toy manufacturer and many sculptors, painters and mold makers. He grew his hobby into a world wide expertise that the industry has embraced. In 2004 he teamed up with his toy buddy Jason “ToyOtter” Geyer and they created their own website www.ActionFigureInsider.com. Daniel has been quoted in both industry and mass media press outlets. Over the years Daniel and AFi have been sought out as experts in the field. Daniel was regularly featured on “Attack of the Show” on the G4 network as the primary contributor to their “Mint On Card” segment, and our front page has been linked to from USA Today’s “Pop Candy” Blog twice. Daniel’s content has also been featured on MSNBC.com, Time.com, The Wall Street Journal, The Saturday Evening Post, CNN.com, AssociatedPress.com Wired.com, Fark.com, Boing-Boing, Gizmodo.com, Ain’t It Cool News, the Official Star Wars blog, Geekologie, G4, CNet and Toy Fare magazine, among many others. He has consulted on toy lines, books, documentaries and TV shows. But all of that really just sounds snooty and “tootin’ his own horn” – the long and short of it is that Daniel loves toys and he LOVES talking about them.
