Erik "Superfriend" Skov

“Gathered together from the four corners of the universe.” Oh, wait, that’s the show, not me. Erik “SuperFriend” Skov never actually got to appear on the show, although he did watch it every week. Erik spent 6 years working for Hasbro in Pawtucket, RI before leaving for a job that paid more (Why else would a collector leave the company that was making Star Wars, Transformers, and while I was there Batman). I used to post all over the net. These days I tend to hang my hat at AFI.

WizKidsGames is no more.  You’ve seen the press release from Topps.  It was on our front news page.  It might even still be here.  The press release says that HeroClix and the other games – Pirates and Star Wars – will continue, just be run out of Topps headquarters in New York.  But just in…

I found myself and my family in Western Connecticut earlier today.  We had planned on visiting a train museum, but it was closed on Tuesdays.  So I asked the guy at the hotel desk for suggestions.  The casino was out because of my kids ages.  Then he mentioned something I had not thought of.  We…

This time it is Mattel which shows its love of the Legion of Doom.

October 25, 2008
Deep in their dark and treacherous swamp, the Legion of Doom plans its next attack… On your collection!  Ever since the creators of the SuperFriends put together 13 of the galaxy’s vilest villains, this group has been etched in our minds.  Sure, I admit to having difficulty naming all 13 at once, but that does…

One of the things you notice fairly quickly when you collect this stuff – and take it out of the package –  is how much packaging there really is.  It doesn’t matter the toy or the company, there is still packaging that has to be dealt with.   What do we do with it?

One of my current favorite books is  Superman/Batman. The concept seems like a no brainer.  Put DCs top 2 characters in the same book.  Its been done before.  When I was younger, the same concept was called "Worlds Finest."  Sometimes an idea is so good it strikes gold twice.

For some reason, they won’t let me forget.  I hate the story, "Identity Crisis", in so many ways.  But that is not my issue today.  My issue today is that DC won’t just let me forget it and move on.  This once declared "stand alone story", has become almost a cornerstone of the DCU at…

September 30, 2008 has some reports from the Baltimore Comic Con which was this past weekend.  One of them is from the DC Comics DC Nation panel.  I found one of the comments in there to be very telling.  "Everyone is a Black Lantern."  That’s right, anyone who has died, literally at any time in the DCU…

Say you drive to every toy store withing 50 miles every day looking for those elusive toys.  But the price of gas has you down.  You could consider getting a smaller car…

In 1999, a new era of Batman mythos was born when the cartoon Batman Beyond went on the air.  Now he’s on DVD, in the comics, and on his way to your toy shelf.

Recently in an exchange on a forum, it came out that my air hockey table is right now covered with HeroClix.  The quick witted response was "Wow, you came up with a way to make them really fly."  Then it hit me.  They really have taken over the whole air hockey table. These 1-1/4" based things.  The whole thing.

This week, DC recalled one of their books.  For extremely offensive word use.  Apparently, they attempted to black out the words, but in the final analysis apparently you can still read them.  So now they are being recalled. I’m not going to dwell on what the words were, that has been done by others, but…

One of my friends here, SDMike, has commented to me that while most of the the topics in the forums are about toys, his first love is comics.  Considering how much we discuss toys related to comics, I think that most of us are comic fans too. As my user name, superfriend, indicates I am…

Milestone Comics.  I’ll admit, I’ve never read an issue of any of the series.  When they came out, I was burned out from trying a number of independant series only to be disappointed in one way or another.  I also had been through a cost cutting round that left me with no Marvel comics left. …

A father passing by his son’s bedroom was astonished to see that his bed was nicely made and everything was picked up. Then he saw an envelope, propped up prominently on the pillow that was addressed to ‘Dad.’ With the worst premonition, he opened the envelope with trembling hands and read the letter.

August 12, 2008
That’s what I see in DC Comics these days.  Its the same tune over and over again.  Character X is killed off for a cheap thrill.  But once they are dead, they are no longer available to be used in stories in the regular universe.  Sure they might pop up in an alternate reality or…

Marvel Comics’ big event for the summer is "Secret Invasion".  In their closest tie in yet, WizKids has released their newest HeroClix expansion of the same name.  And HeroClix Secret Invasion delivers. Last night I played in a sealed event at my local store.  Everyone buys two boxes of 5 pieces each (10 pieces total)…

Here I am, knowing 5 waves of Mattel’s DCUC, and debating.   Do I buy or not.  I saw Black Manta again yesterday.  At 10$ each and in the 6" scale, they look a lot like DCDirect figures to me.  And that’s the problem.

What follows is an email exchange between myself and Paul Levitz, President of DC Comics.  If you want something, I always say aim for the top.  And I had his email address.  I hope he doesn’t mind.   me: Fri 1/7/2005 4:55 PM Subject: Mattel, JLU, and Captain Atom

You may remember my recent article about "A Perfect JLU 3 Pack".  Unfortunately, I’m not sure Mattel saw it.  Because this isn’t one of them.
