Daniel Pickett

Daniel “Julius Marx” Pickett has been around toys his whole life. The first line he ever collected was Mego’s World’s Greatest Super Heroes line back in the 70s. He has been surrounded by collectables ever since.

In 1999 he was confounded by a lack of information and news about some of his favorite toy lines he was collecting. Since he couldn’t find the information he decided to pursue it himself thinking other people might also be interested in the same news. He started writing a weekly column on the toy industry and action figure for a toy news site and in a years time he tripled the sites daily traffic with his updates, reviews and product features.

He built relationships with every major toy manufacturer and many sculptors, painters and mold makers. He grew his hobby into a world wide expertise that the industry has embraced.

In 2004 he teamed up with his toy buddy Jason “ToyOtter” Geyer and they created their own website www.ActionFigureInsider.com.

Daniel has been quoted in both industry and mass media press outlets. Over the years Daniel and AFi have been sought out as experts in the field. Daniel was regularly featured on “Attack of the Show” on the G4 network as the primary contributor to their “Mint On Card” segment, and our front page has been linked to from USA Today’s
“Pop Candy” Blog twice. Daniel’s content has also been featured on MSNBC.com,
Wired.com, Fark.com, Boing-Boing, Gizmodo.com, Ain’t It Cool News, the Official
Star Wars blog, Geekologie, G4, CNet and Toy Fare magazine, among many
others. He has consulted on toy lines, books, documentaries and TV shows.

But all of that really just sounds snooty and “tootin’ his own horn” – the long and short of it is that Daniel loves toys and he LOVES talking about them.

2nd Anniversary Celebration   There’s an extensive list of Marvel product that Toy Biz/Marvel Toys were looking at doing for 2007/2008 when the license for Marvel characters was transfered to Hasbro.   Most of these concepts will not see the light of day.  Over the next few days I’ll be posting some of these…

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA CYLON 5-PACK    Last year at Toy Fair Art Asylum gave us our first sneak peek at the New Battlestar Galactica MiniMates.  Now, one year later, due to a joint venture between Diamond Select Toys and Art Asylum we can get our mits on them.  These Cylons are based on the hit…

Wow.  Now that’s WEIRD.   I know it’s been about a year since the KB toys closest to my work closed down… but to go from a KB to a Victoria’s Secret?   That’s just odd.   Of course this is the SAME mall that closed down the Suncoast for nine months… and then reopened…

I’ve just recently discovered "the show" with zeFrank…. which is a shame becasue the show is ending this week.    Basically our man zeFrank has been doing a little web show 3-5 minuets or so each day, every WEEK day, for a year with his thoughts on the new of the world, musings in life,…

The names have been changed to protect the innocent… or guilty.    "Bruce" works over at Cartoon Network as an animator. "Bruce" just ran across the Justice League Style Guide. "Bruce"  got bored, created something…something I can now never unsee:   And now I share it with you.  Good luck…and may God have mercy on…

TOM CRUISE CRAZY!    Just in case you want to sing along!  Tom Cruise is so in love with Katie At least all his people tell him so And while he thinks that she’s a very special lady It’s probably not the way he’d choose to go And a lifetime of longing looks would cause…

No, no… don’t worry.  This post isn’t about some super secret limited edition figure from Mattel.  Not this year! While I was back home for the holidays I got to go visit the home of one of my best friends "Dr. Loopy."   He and I got back into collecting togther back in 1990 and…

I think resolutions are best when set to music. As you know I am reacently obsesessed with Johnathan Coulton and his "Thing-A-Week" project where he wrote and recorded a new song every week for a year.   Here is his New Years song "Resolutions." I think there are a few in here for all of us….

Hasbro has embraced their new Marvel license with a vengence.  We saw a LOT of new upcoming product this past August at Comic Con and Hasbro made sure that they had an aisle full of new product ready for the fourth quarter and the holiday season.  In the week leading up to Christmas Wal-mart seemed…

I love finding bootleg toys.  I’ve found that it’s not too hard to find them in Los Angeles.  Lot’s of flea markets, mall kiosks and convenient stores have them around these parts.    I love their blatant disregard of not just copyrights… but years of character history!  Of course the people making these have no…

I know that it’s the end of November… but we just got the Comic Con edition of Geek Week put together and on-line… and it’s more bacon than the pan can handle!   I make a couple of appearances in this episode… and who knows… you might be in it somewhere too!

Let’s set the "way back machine" to 5 years ago when I would wake up at 0’dark thirty, drive out to Pasadena, pick up my buddy CubanZod and drive up the highway hitting every Wal-mart, K-mart, Target and KB Toys that we could find (mostly outside the LA city limits), looking for all manor of…

Waaaaay back in 1979, Parker Brothers took a chance on a new property/invention and decided to break away from just making board games and dip their toe into boys toys and action figures.  That venture was ROM: The Space Knight. Marvel Comics also picked up the property for a 75 issue run written by Bill…

Here’s a cool, one of a kind little item I thought you guys would dig. As you may recall Kid Robot did an extremely limited  run of vinyl figures based on Jamie Hewlett’s designs for the "animated" personas of the band the "Gorillaz."       Many fans salivated over these, but a lot couldn’t justify…

This past Sunday was October 15th.  That was the "Target date" for the JLU Target exclusive 6-pack featuring Doomsday to be released to the public.   More specifically that was the day that most Targets were to have their "Great Gifts under $20" endcap built in the toy section. In addition to the Doomsday set there is…

Ok.. this is a weird one.  The Suncoast Video in the mall over by my work closed down about 6-8 months ago after that big announcement that they were scuttling over half the stores.   I was sad to see it go because they were one of the last, great alternative sources of specialty market action…

In the past I have shown you pictures of Marvel Legends prototypes, test shots and paint masters, but you’ve never seen what it takes to make a Marvel Legends figure. The picture to the right is of the steel tools it takes to make one Marvel Legends figure.  Every one of those boxes you see…
