Girls do still play with dolls, and boys have moved on more to video games. There are many problems with GI Joe become ever present like Barbie (or Star Wars).
: 1.) they need a successful cartoon to advertise the toys. They need that cartoon to stay on the air for more than 2-3 years (which seems impossible). Not only that, but they need that cartoon to grab the attention of the young viewers.
: 2.) they will constantly be hamstrung by the fact that GI Joe is basically the US military at war. Sometimes war just doesn't sell.
