Adventure.

I love that word.  It’s one of my favorites.  I think it’s one of the most inclusive, evocative words we have and hearing it makes me happy.

Tonight, we’re going to talk about adventure as combined with another of my favorite words, hero.  Specifically, we’re going to talk about when the two words, along with two others, look like this…

One of our posters asked,  “Why isn’t John Stewart in the JLA line which had the 3rd wave solicited this week.  I started writing and decided it was kind of long for a post.

The current JLA line of figures form DCDirect covers the JLA comic era that was started roughly at the "One Year Later" event, after "52".  Brad Meltzer’s story is part Bats, Supes, Wondy sitting around debating who would be the ‘best’ to pull into the League while outside events cause it to form organically.

Continuuing my 2006 trip to SDCC. – Friday before SDCC

Leaving on an Airplane
We boarded the plane and then sat on the tarmac for an hour. My wife thinks we could have saved money if we had booked the plane tickets more in advance. Southwest has ‘internet’ fares. Southwest doesn’t connect with some of those travel sites, but they are cheap. We had a stop in LA on the way to SD.   So planning early might save you some money.

SDCC as a Vacation

With Convention season upon us, I thought I’d submit this.  I know some of you have seen it before, but we have many new members, who might be contemplating going to SDCC for the first time.

(pic from their official web site: http://www.comic-con.org/cci/ )

In 2005 I thought aboout going to ComicCon so much I almost hopped a plane at the last minute, planning to attend one day and flay back that night. Almost. I never got as far as looking at flights, but I did debate about it a lot. Finally, i rationalized myself out of it because of the cost. But man I wanted to see the new Mattel JLU figures.

Ol’ Blue Eyes.

Frankie Boy.

10 years ago today the Chairman of the Board passed on. Francis Albert Sinatra died of a heart attack on Thursday night, May 14, 1998. Same night as the final Seinfeld show.

With a swagger that drove women mad, a style that men aspired to emulate and unequalled charisma and charm, Frank Sinatra was more than just another Hollywood star – He was a legend, an enigma. Simultaneously relatable and untouchable. But I was never really aware of any of that growing up.

I honestly never really cared much about Frank Sinatra when I was a kid. My older brother Scott is a huge Frank fan, and I would often hear his music playing when we would spend time together. I always liked it well enough, but it really didn’t do much for me. Being younger, I recall foolishly thinking it was “old people’s music” and not really giving it a second thought. When I grew older, though, I began to appreciate Frank Sinatra. The nuances in Frank’s voice, the arrangement of the music and way the songs sounded. Not just the words and melody, but the way the songs sounded. The way he emphasized certain parts of a song. Frank had an amazing ability to really draw you in to his music and make it a meaningful experience.

Dean, Sammy, Nat, hey I love you guys too. But Frank, man…Frank is The End.  My favorite Sinatra songs change all the time, from season to season, even moment to moment.  It depends on what’s going on my life at the time. Anything, everything can relate to Sinatra. That’s what’s amazing about the man’s music.

David Patrone summed it up perfectly on his blog recently: You hear this phrase a lot: "The thing about Frank Sinatra is…" well that’s just it.  Sinatra did it all; his life, his music, an Oscar, eleven Grammies, two Golden Globes, uncountable other awards, his philanthropy, his failures, his ups his downs, his pain, his love, his luck (both good and bad) and his success tell an amazing story.  His was a full life and if you haven’t had a chance to read about it, you really should.  You could learn a lot about livin’ from Frank Sinatra.  He climbed to the top and landed at the bottom and pulled it back up to the top again several times in Global Proportions.  He was loved and hated and revered and despised, sometimes by the same person.  His actual life was a piece of art; simultaneously beautiful and ignoble in the making, sublime and terrible in the examination.  I’ve never heard anyone discount Sinatra as an artist; they may say something like, "I like so and so better" or, "that guy was a real @$$@!" but I’ve never heard anyone say, "I don’t like Frank Sinatra."  He was bonified.  He was 100% real.

Tina Sinatra recently commented, "The world stopped 10 years ago May 14th. All over the world, cities were draped in black. It was bizarre. But it tells me, then and now, that music is universal and that the emotional triggers of music never pass in people. You don’t forget an emotional moment, good or bad, particularly if it is connected to a song. And Dad was the kind of singer that you listened to if you were happy, if you were sad, and when you were intimate. It was said when he died that he underscored our lives – and I think he did. All singers do that. He just did it a little better and he did it for longer."

She’s right.

So tonight, all you cats out there raise a glass and, like Frankie said, "Live every day like it’s your last."

Have you ever been woken up in the middle of the night by a crashing sound that gets your heart racing for as long as it takes to realize the sound came from some of your displayed figures falling over? Well, it is that time of year again. Phoenix hasn’t reached 100 just yet, but we’re close. Warmer days mean plastic gets soft. For most action figures its not much of a problem. But some figures are made of an already soft, flexible plastic. This means when the temperatures rise, these figures fall! What can be done to help? The following is a recipe to alleviate this problem and the general issue of figures that have difficulties standing…

As a second look at HeroClix, lets take a closer look at one of the pieces I played last night, Dr. Mid-Nite – the Experienced version.  Up until about a year ago, there were 3 versions of most characters made, to show progression throughout the characters long history: Rookie, Experienced, and Veteran.  So, lets start with the basic question, "Why would I play this piece?"  To understand that, we need to look at his dial.

So after reading Scott’s reviews of the new Indy toys I decided to go out over my lunch hour and pick some of them up. Being that I had a $40.00 TRU gift card eating a hole in my wallet I thought that’d be the best place to go. Well to my surprise there was NOT 1 single carded Indy figure left on the shelf. Not that they had that much shelf space for them to even begin with. I hope that TRU decides to give Indy some more room as we get closer to the movies release. So I made my way back to work and thought I’d check out my online options.

A couple weeks ago, my wife and I agreed to go hiking with another couple who’d wanted to do so for a long time.  Once we agreed, I told my friend to pick the place since he’s experienced in such things.

This is where we "hiked"…

I love HeroClix.  I blogged about my team a bit back.  How about a feature about HeroClix in general?  (all of these pictures come from WizKids, the maker of HeroClix.) http://www.WizKidsGames.com

To me, one of the awesome things about this game is the variety of characters.

Wow, this was a fun job this time.  Can you feel my sarcasm?

It seems the gods of Lost or the gods of weather are not happy with Oklahoma of late.  For the last three weeks every Thursday night we’ve had severe weather that has threated the airing of the program.  Last Thursday, we had tornadoes and all regular programming was preempted.  Understandable.  In the vast scheme of things, LOST pales in importance to safety.

BUT, where as the NBC and CBS affiliates announced rebroadcasting in the course of the weather coverage, our ABC station said that they had to clear it with ABC in New York.  ?!?!  Our recourse was to watch the episode on our computers.  So, a huge throng rioted and flooded the station with emails of protest.  Tonight, at 11:PM, the show will be rebroadcast.

But, I went ahead and watched the program on the computer and here is my latest recap of the show for those of you interested.  As always, this is a SPOILER ALERT in case you have not seen the show yet.

 Enjoy…

Filmation closed out the 70′s with one of their finest cartoons: The Adventures of Flash Gordon. Unfortunately, it lasted only 2 seasons. That may have been for the best given the wrong turn NBC forced it to take, ie: abandoning the serial format and adding Gremlin the Dragon. Recently, I rewatched most of the series. At times I squirmed. At times I was surprised by segments of beautiful animation. Whether you loved it or hated it one thing was for certain – there was great potential for toys!
