Last summer at the San Diego Comic Con International Hasbro finally made the announcement that I had been waiting for: a 3-3/4" Marvel Universe line. As a big fan of the 3-3/4" scale (there’s nothing better in my book) I was hoping Hasbro would go this route with the Marvel license. The announcement was made, the first pictures were shown and the waiting began. The line wasn’t due to hit stores until March 2009! That was a long way off from July 2008!

Seriously, how cool is this guy? I stumbled upon him today and felt it should be shared just for the coolness factor.

Sometime soon I’ll do a big Secret Wars writeup, because the information on the web is sorely lacking…there’s a lot more to this line than people know.

Peace,

Chip

Okay, I finally got around to taking new pics of my Super Powers collection, and I figured I would highlight it in my blog in case anyone was interested.  I may add to descriptions of things later on, but for now I’ve put up some explanations on certain photos so people would know what they’re looking at.  I hope everyone enjoys the photos as much as I enjoy collecting this line…it’s really been a LOT of fun! A few thank-yous before I proceed : Mike Mensinger at http://www.kennersuperpowers.com…Mike has been a wealth of knowledge and is always around to offer support and give me a heads-up on something I might want.  Jason & Dan here at AFI…what can I say that hasn’t been said already about these guys?  They are Super Powers fanatics through-and-through, and they inspire me to be as obsessed as I am…same with all the guys who haunt the Vintage forum here at AFI like Kastor and Roadhouse.   Finally, the guys over at Rebelscum both in the forums and in the chatroom…Allan, Josh, Lee, Steve, James, Shane, Dan…you guys are the best, especially humoring me when I pop into the middle of a Star Wars discussion and start my SP crap.  :D

Okay, here we go…

It isn’t everyday designers get total creative freedom with a project. So when our ally in the industry, O’Neil Printing, contacted us and four other studios about designing a commemorative poster series for their 100th anniversary I saw an opportunity! During our first informal brain storming session I suggested: "Lets just do something fun, like design it using 100 action figures." Well, Creative Director Steve and Senior Designer Kevin both have an appreciation for little plastic people so it wasn’t too hard of a sell.

Included in a "big box of love" from Mattel to AFi was the TRU exclusive Naruto Ninja Battleground Game. It so happens that my "little brother," Johnny, is quite the Squad 7 fan. So we gathered our shurikens, opened the box and took this game for a whirl.

So this week at NYCC, my favorite MOTU character was announced as the August MOTUC figure release:  Tri-Klops!

Of course, I already have made a custom  MOTUC Tri-Klops…

So how does one feel when you get a "real figure" of a custom you’ve made?

Hello Marvel Universe, Goodbye Marvel Legends, it was fun while it lasted.

*

Well I fear the end of Marvel Legends is almost here. Even though I’ve heard from a few industry insiders that Hasbro is still gonna support ML, I think the end is near. Here are the signs:

Never.  Never did I expect to see these in plastic.  No way.  That is why their inclusion in the slide show during Mattel’s presentation on Saturday blew me away.  I’ve been a big fan of this line since it began, but this, this just shows me how much they get it.

These are the things that came to mind while I was driving to NYCC yesterday morning.

A limo passed me.  Why would someone take a limo to a comic convention?  (of course, everyone on the road was going there!)

A Frito Lay potato truck goes by.  They must be made by Frito Lay people.  Frito Lay People.  I wonder what people made out of Frito Lay chips would be like…

Just thinking back to those WWF days when Jesse Ventura was color commenting with Gorilla Monsoon or Gene Okerlund makes me laugh. (In fact, it was Ventura who gave Okerlund the nickname "Mean Gene!") Here’s a man with an interesting career. From Navy Seal, to pro wrestler, to action film star, to city mayor, to governor of Minnesota. Gotta respect that. Now he’s living down in Baja, Mexico. Probably doesn’t even realize he’s got a new action figure!

Part four of my Toy Fair adventure 10 years ago.
To recap, in part 1, we covered how I had made a deal with a local paper to provide a story for them in exchange for credentials to get in.
In part 2, we covered preparing for the show.
Part 3 was the show.

Now I had to deliver on my promise to the local paper.  Now I had to write my article. (more…)

OK, I’m cheating here.  I’m looking at the article for details…

Best known for his 14 year run on Strangers in Paradise and his new endeavor, Echo, Terry Moore is an icon of Indie comics. During his recent visit to Phoenix Comicon, Terry was good enough to chat with me for a bit.  I started by asking him to forgive the somewhat specific nature of my questions. This is an action figure collecting web site after all!

Now came the prep work.  What, you thought that getting the press pass was it?  I had a story to write.
