Superman Batman: Apocalypse came out yesterday.  For those who have not seen it or read the source material, I’ll try to avoid spoilers.

What I liked.

The art.  Once again, WB/DC Animation tried and succeeded doing a good job matching the style of the animation to the style of the art in the source comic.  I felt like I could be reading a comic drawn by Michael Turner.

The story adaptation.  Very subtly, they tied the story back to Superman Batman: Public Enemies.  It was unnecessary, but it was cool for comic fans that they did it.

Some of the plot points were rearranged, but all the necessary beats were there.  As my son and I watched it we knew what should happen and were happy to see the various parts of the story unfold, even if they seemed shortened or slightly out of order.

What I missed.

The pieces they had to chop out for time.  I know this was necessary, but Artemis had a big role in one part in the comic and she was not even shown there in the movie (the fight in the park).

What a hellish day I’ve had.  However…in the mail…redemption!  (…and you wouldn’t believe the hotness of the chick taking the photo!)

WOOT!

As if that wasn’t enough, ALSO in the mail today…the completion of the eleven previously-released characters on the 33-back Super Powers card SET (flanking the Samurai hand-painted carded Toy Fair sample).  Kalibak is here!  WOOT!

I hope to get back to blogging soon…been kind-of out of it lately, but hopefully this will help spur things along.

Until next time!

Peace,

Chip

I was listening to the Comic Geek Speak podcast recently and one of the hosts mentioned something about collecting comics in the days before the internet, and how there seemed to be few surprises for comics readers these days. He had a good point. Between solicitations in Previews and information from the various comic book news sites such as Newsarama and Comic Book Resources (my two personal favorite stops for comic news) it is pretty hard to not have key plot points or guest appearances spoiled months ahead of time.

The second movie based upon the comic Superman / Batman is due out next week.  "Superman Batman: Apocalypse." Tuesday, September 28.  It doesn’t seem to be getting the press it deserves, so I’m adding some here.

Based upon the 2nd arc of Jeff Loeb’s run on the Superman / Batman comic, this movie tells the tale of a strange girl arriving on Earth, who appears to be Kryptonian.  Superman and Batman find her.  Superman is convinced she is his relative, while Batman distrusts her.  Wonder Woman joins the story. Barda is recruited to help rescue the girl when she is kidnapped by Darkseid.

Diamond Select Toys has a new line of Minimates that’s just starting to hit TRUs right now called Minimates MAX (Mobile Action Xtreme). Here’s the description of the line from the back of the packaging:

"Never before has a team of heroes like this been assembled! There’s no situation that’s beyond their resources. You can use any mix of parts from any of the members to create your own team, use the gear you want to use and imagine any situation you can for the team to solve. For the first time ever, you can create your own mission as well as team members."

I don’t know about you, but hard as I try and fight it, I find myself creeping into cliché more often than I care to admit. You know, those horrible old stand up jokes about turning into your own father when you hear certain words come out of your mouth? Or reacting to things differently as you get a little older, and thinking, “holy crap, I would have given my parents SUCH hell for that” as that icy chill runs down your spine? Yes, dear readers, it’s all happening to me, I’m only human. But if I step back a bit and am really honest with myself, I don’t think it’s me that’s changed or become more uptight. It’s the rest of the world.

Someone seems to not care about the new episodes of Batman Brave and Bold.  I love this series, but advertising for the new episodes seems to be missing.

Cartoon Network has been talking about 4 premieres for last night, Friday 9/17, for over a week.  Clone Wars.  Some other new shows.  But never mentioned Batman Brave and Bold.

The Batman Brave and Bold page on Facebook has been gone for weeks.  They used to put preview clips on their page several days before a new episode would be shown.

Newsarama.com, which also ran the preview clips had no mention of new episodes.

As a lifelong Godzilla fan and collector, the pickings were kind of slim. In the 1970′s, we were treated to a Shogun Warriors Godzilla, which was pretty off-model, an un-articulated PVC that came with a playset, and the Aurora model, which was as articulated (not at all) as most offerings. We were teased by images of kids playing with Godzilla toys in the movies, but that was about it. Then came the glorious 80′s, which brought to market the Bandai Vinyl Collection. These 8" "action" figures were semi-articulated, and offered a wide variety of characters. This line would come to pass as the definitive toyline, which continues to this day in limited 6" releases. The 1980′s also saw the rise of the ultra-detailed Garage kit offerings.

Remember what that’s from?  Probably not.

I’m in Walmart yesterday and, though they didn’t have what I went in there for, they did have the 2010 Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 4" Lord Zedd figure (and Star Trek: Voyager Season 1 for 20 bucks, but that item doesn’t figure in the story).  I went to what looked like the shortest line to pay…

…and the adventure began.

Let’s get this out of the way right now.

It’s not a call for amnesty.

It’s not advocacy of killing those opposed to (illegal) immigration.

Just stop it.

Told you there would be more.

If you’ve read any of my previous reviews, you know how this works.  If you haven’t, this is how this works:

Non-SPOILER Review

Rating on the four-star scale (five-star scales are for noncommittal hacks)

We’re going to do away with the SPOILERy thoughts section of previous reviews.  Keeps things leaner and more professional.

OK, we’re off.

Hey.

How are you?

Cool.  I’m fine, bordering on good.

Feel like talking toys and stuff for a while?

Alright.  Let’s do it.
