Its fun when worlds collide. For instance, I love action figures. And I love yoga. You would be correct in assuming that those are two hobbies that don’t have much crossover. But thanks to a company called Kridana a bridge was built between my obsessions. Unfortunately, Kridana has come and gone. But let me at least pay a little tribute to an outstanding effort, albeit a few years late.

At the risk of jeopardizing some geek cred I’ll admit that only just now am I watching the ’03-’09 reboot Battlestar Galactica series. Based on all I’d heard I knew it’d be one of those epic television viewing experiences and I did not want to rush into it. I decided to start by rewatching the original series. My other motivation to start in 1978 was that I had been collecting the vintage Battlestar Galactica action figures and knew I wanted to blog about them. I felt compelled to reabsorb the television series from which these figures sprang.

One of the best things about no longer being a serious collector of anything these days, is that I don’t often get hung up about being a completist. This is a double-edged sword, however, because the money saved on “collecting them all” can now be put towards those white whales of plastic that have haunted me for decades. You know what I speak of. Those pieces you’d missed out on as a youth, or read about as a teen, or have vague memories of seeing somewhere as an adult. They don’t necessarily add to whatever subjects you happen to collect, and some you might even be sheepish about admitting you lust after. And they all seem to be in the realm of ‘pricey’. They’re out there, they exist, and they’re just waiting for you to finally bring them home to fondle. For me, there is one particularly bizarre case in point: the legendary Doctor Who Tardis Tuner.

I’ve recently re-thought about the comics I am buying, and a lot of them no longer fit into the realm of getting a good return of enjoyment.

Avengers (and really any Marvel Comic)
The recent relaunch of the Avengers group of books had me excited, but not at $4 each.  Its kind of odd.  At $2.99, I would have bought 1 or maybe even 2.  At $3.99, I’ll buy none.

Legion of Super-Heroes
I like the Legion of Super-Heroes, the team.  I enjoyed seeing them in the JLA/JSA cross-over.  I bought the issues of Action Comics which followed up on that story.  And I bought the new LSH title.  Until I realized I was paying $3.99 an issue.  Its kind of easy to miss when you are buying a bunch of comics every week.  I know the price will go down, but its the principle of the thing.  And then there is the fact that the stories were kind of dull and felt like retreads.  Mind controlled Ultra Boy creating random destruction?  Boring.  Saturn Girl worried about her kidnapped kids?  We already did that.  One of them was sent back through time and became Validus.  Besides, I wanted to read about the Legion, not their kids.

JLU Amanda WallerWith Toy Fair 2011 came an announcement from Mattel that this would be the last year for their Justice League Unlimited action figure line. For many of us, that’s going to leave a significant void in our hobbies. We’ve spent a little over eight years in our pursuit of these little guys and gals, but don’t panic. All good things must come to an end, and JLU has had a long, fun-filled life.

Hello everyone, and welcome to another Super Powers Highlight!  Fresh out of the post office box today is one of my newest arrivals…and a pretty damn cool thing to boot!  This is the master color key for the Martian Manhunter mini-comic.  I was fortunate to add a couple of these to my collection this past week (the other being Red Tornado), but I selected this one to showcase here in my blog because it arrived with an extra added bonus…an alternate cover that differs from the final version included with the figure.

Each page contains color code information for the printer, and as far as what is known each copy is one of a kind.  The colors on each page seem to be applied with a watercolor-type marker.  The seller only had examples from Wave 2 of the Kenner figure line, but he did tell me that at one point he had Wave 1 characters as well.  Upon inquiry I was told they were sold years ago at a convention.  If anyone knows the whereabouts of the Brainiac…well, you know where to reach me.  :-)   Without further ado…here are the images!
