About 6 years ago, in 2006, I started collecting Justice League Unlimited figures which then prompted me to actually watch the show they were based on. I fell in love with both. Collecting became a passion and a hobby that kept me going and interested. The evolution of the show, much like the figures, seemed to have no bounds, just getting better and more interesting. My favorite episode being “Task Force X” which blew my mind storytelling wise, giving us a whole new perspective. It wasn’t just an episode from the villains point of view but villains acting like heroes against the heroes that could be villains, bringing up all types of questions that would be reviewed more intensely later on in the season.

Earlier tonight I attended the World Premiere of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns part 1 of 2 at the Paley Center for Media in New York City. 2012 will be remembered as one of the best years for superhero movies and luckily this direct to video movie is only another plus in that column. The movie matches the graphic novel beat for beat with subtle differences added by director Jay Oliva.

Batman: Brave and the Bold was scary for many reasons: it had a light tone, it was not a Timm-verse Batman, and Oswald from “The Drew Carey Show” was BATMAN!!! The toys were even scarier, they weren’t in scale with JLU and they had crazy peg-holes, PEG-HOLES!!!!! The magic of the show won fans over, its great stories and diverse cast had viewers of all ages coming back. And for some of us, the magic of the show managed to make the toys fun to collect.

Granted I only own 5 Brave and the Bold figures, but still much like they show I was surprised by how much I liked them. The toy-line is still going pretty strong and is much easier to find than other Mattel lines. New figures are hitting the pegs, and one in particular caught my eye. It has a removable cowl! Revealing Bruce Wayne is the Batman!

My girlfriend and I recently took a week long trip to Mexico, the Motherland. I call it the Motherland because both my parents are Mexican, and while I was born and raised in the USA, I was brought up with a rich Mexican heritage and speak fluent Spanish. So naturally I’ve been to Mexico several times before, but never Mexico City or its surrounding areas. My family is from the north of Mexico and that’s pretty much all I knew of the place.

On this trip I expected fun, relaxation and adventure (the fun version that American tourists have when "discovering" a nice restaurant as described in a guide book). What I didn’t expect was to be hounded by toys and geek culture. My first encounter being at a KFC near our hotel in Puebla. They were offering Justice League toys with the kids meals, called Chicky Packs. Pictured below are the images from the offending KFC. Not pictured is the fact that KFC’s in Mexico also sell chicken butts, and no I didn’t have any, they’re too spicy.

A crossover hit into the mainstream media if ever there was one. Unfortunately, as well-versed as I try to be in comic-books and chic sub-cultures in general, I had overlooked this title. Afraid of buying into the hype, I avoided reading it. But, being a man that always judges a book by its cover, I was always highly intrigued by the cover art of the now hard to find first issue.

I consider myself rather misanthropic. Or at least I try to be. I find most people annoying, especially when you get to know them. Don’t get me wrong I can hate people on a purely superficial level but where’s the fun in that? You can’t really bad-mouth strangers? Well, you can, but I’m pretty sure that’s just racism.

One thing I do like is film. I love movies, I go to the movies often, as often as I possibly can. So far this year I’ve watched some lovely films, such as: The Illusionist, Biutiful, and a handful more that I’ve quite enjoyed. But, when it comes to movies and people, one thing I hate, is people complaining about how terrible movies are or how terrible they can be. You know what, don’t go. Don’t go, please. Because if you can’t tell a movie is going to be terrible going into it, then really you shouldn’t be judging movies.

You hear people complain constantly about how movie trailers ruin the movie, telling you too much information or giving away the ending or “twist” or “spoilers” or whatever geeks get annoyed about. But you see that’s a good thing, I can usually tell how terrible a movie is going to be by watching the trailers, that’s how I avoid terrible movies. When I first saw the trailer for the film “No Strings Attached”, I knew instantly, “I’m not going to see this.” When you watch a trailer and you make the now classic “I can’t wait.” or “I’ll be the first in line.” sarcastic comment, hopefully you are sticking to your insincerity. If not, then you sir(or madam) are a moron.

I mean when we all saw this:

Click here to view the embedded video.

We knew it was going to suck. Hard. Come on, you don’t deserve a refund if you saw the movie. If you watched it in irony, then you had a better reason than anybody else. It is after all a movie about Scientology (although one cannot accuse them of not having an imagination). Inversely, when I first saw this trailer:

Click here to view the embedded video.

I was pretty much right about how awesome it was going to be, some may disagree, but then again you’re probably some form of autistic that can’t process film aesthetics and prefer to watch window treatments.
There are those that firmly stand by the “You can’t judge a book by its cover” argument. To them I say, I’m pretty sure you can. If Fabio is on the cover, the name Faulkner is not. Plus, I usually judge my books by page and picture count or if it says Nicholas Sparks or Holy Bible on it.

My point is, I think, that if we all became harsher movie trailer critics, maybe, just maybe, we wouldn’t have bad movies and in turn would have more intelligent people. Now I understand if that may seem like a stretch but it could work and in my purview the world would be a better place. A place where I would be kinder to people. I wouldn’t be so judgemental and more open and maybe forgiving. Dare I dream, a world where the name Tyler Perry may never precede the title of anything be it movie, play or book. Although, I would LOVE to see a Tyler Perry video game, like a Grand Theft Auto where Madea pulls people out of cars and takes them to church. What a wonderful world this would be…

I’m not a very prolific toy blogger, mainly because toys and subculture have taken a backseat to life. My philosophy on life has always been, “Life is a series of disappointments with achievements spread thin throughout.” No grand philosopher said that, maybe Spock, but I’m pretty sure I made it up jogging one night. In the past 3 years I’ve had some high highs and low lows. I have some regrets, but I can always count on toys and this site especially for always being there when I need it. Toy and geeky movie news will always remove whatever pall may be on my mood even if just for a moment. So I just wanted to say thanks guys! I’m glad the site is still going strong and for being a much needed pick-me up in this otherwise overwhelming maelstrom we call “Life”. I’ll try to write more here, I have a few interviews I’m working on and maybe some movie reviews. See you guys later! Happy Hunting!

Earlier this evening I attended what was considered the "world premiere" of the film Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths at the Paley Center for Media in Manhattan. Although it has been widely available illegally on the internet, this was the first official screening of the film, before it’s debut on multiple media formats Feb. 23rd. In attendance were the writer of the film Dwayne McDuffie, voice director of the film Andrea Romano, and actor James Woods.

The film tells the story of the titular Justice League facing evil versions of themselves in a parallel universe, and really, what more could you want? This film is the latest in a series of direct to video films featuring characters from the DC Universe. The script was written many years ago to be used as a back-door pilot film for the Cartoon Network show Justice League: Unlimited. The script was never produced, until finally executive producer Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series, JLU, JL: The New Frontier), a long time champion of the script, got it off the shelf and into production.

My journey with action figures started at a very young age, 2 or 3 to be exact. I collected and played with Real Ghostbusters action figures. Believe it or not I have a vague memory of what had to have been my 3rd or 4th Christmas on Earth, and the excitement of opening the Ecto-1. Much like a drug addict I graduated to crazier and more elaborate drugs: Ninja Turtles then Power Rangers and eventually Star Wars. And with what I would describe as my “ecstasy” phase there were several intermittent figure lines sprinkled within that time-frame: GI Joe, Thundercats, Darkwing Duck, Batman, Jurassic Park, embarrassingly Space Jam, even worse still Lost in Space: the movie and countless more dalliances. I created adventures and specific personalities for almost all my figures and gave new names and characteristics to any repeats. One can only have so many Han Solo’s before the evil twin routine grows old.
