Iron Man HeroClix

My initial reaction was that this was the Iron Man movie set.  Apparently it is a comic based set.  But it must be very far off.  Spider-man, Teen Titans and Wolverine and the X-Men sets are coming before this one.  Glad to see Iron Monger and War Machine represented.  War Machine was conspicuously absent from both the Avengers Movie set (it felt like the Iron Man movies should be represented) and the Chaos War set which was heavily Avengers filled.  I still hope that the Iron Man movie set includes characters from all 3 Iron Man movies.

Today, at gaming stores across the land, table top miniatures enthusiasts got an early Christmas present.  A new release of WizKids popular HeroClix game, Streets of Gotham (SOG).  SOG is a sister set to the recent Batman set with many themes from Batman carried across into SOG.  Birds of Prey characters are a new theme in this set which continues the Justice League International, Wildcats and Batman Family themes.

Previewed figures for this set include: Black Canary, Blue Beetle (Ted Kord), Fire, Ice, Calendar Man, Mr. Zsasz, Dove, Huntress, David Cain, Lady Shiva, Deathstroke, Robin (Tim Drake) and the usual Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.  This set also includes both pre and post nu52 versions of characters including new versions of Arsenal, Starfire, Katana and brand new character Starling.

As the day grew closer, Randy and I exchanged FB messages about the No Man’s Land event and the new Batman set (see previous blog).  What I did not tell Randy was that Ben would be coming too.

The day came.  Ben and I left Coventry, headed for Bellingham.  We only missed 2 turns while driving there, and the second one turned out not to matter as we ended up on the correct street anyway.  When we got there, we found a small crowded comic store filled with excited HeroClix players.  We met new people and reminiced with Mark and Randy.  Randy was happily surprised to see Ben.  Reconnecting was cool.(...)

There was a time when my son and I thought there should be animals in HeroClix.  In the set called “DC75″ Beast Boy of the Teen Titans, Doom Patrol and currently being featured on Young Justice, was given 4 forms.  Person, bear, cheetah and T-Rex.

This week WizKids announced that they would revisit the character with 2 new versions.  This time we are getting dolphins and ptyranodons.

While they share the same cool mechanic with the other 4, being able to switch between the various versions, other HeroClix players are making other plans.  300 point armies of the 5 animal forms.  Armies of dolphins to work with Aquaman and Mera – or Lobo!

1. One of the things I noticed while collecting the Batman Brave and Bold line was what was left on the shelves.  As the line progressed, I saw that what hung on the shelves were the single packed villains.  While these tended to be characters with multiple appearances on the show, the demand for them as toys seemed to be over estimated.

The other thing was that many of these villains were also available in two packs with the main heroes of the show.  Batman.  Aquaman.  Blue Beetle.  I believe the hero helps sell the villain.  There really is no need to offer the villains as single pack figures.(...)

Best Buy is likely to have sales on other DC released series and prior movies.  I’ve used release week to pick up a number of sets at Best Buy at reduced prices.  Also, if history repeats, this movie itself will be on sale this week and will be priced 2 or 3 dollars higher after that.  Also, Best Buy continues their tradition of offering an exclusive package with a mini figure.

Anyway, it is out tomorrow.  Run out and buy it. Then come back and tell us what you thought of it.

Earlier this week saw the release of WizKids newest HeroClix set, Galactic Guardians.  Available in single pckas, 5 figure boosters, and a 6 figure starter set.

I played in a sealed tournament on Thursday.  400 points.  I my 2 boosters I pulled : Adam Warlock, Gamora, Nebula, Annihilation Seeker, Xavin, Nova Corps Centurian, Doombot, Hollywood, Cardinal Raker, and Medusa.  The first 4 became my team.  I lost the first round, but won the next to for a score of 2 -1.  One of the awesome things about the event was that since this was the first week of a new set, I had never seen the pieces before and between the 8 players we had, we pulled just about every piece.  Someone even pulled a chase figure.

This time we are talking YOUNG JUSTICE. Mattel has been doing a pretty good job with character selection, giving us a good variety between Young Justice team members, Justice League members, villains, and repaints. But we all know they could do better. The only way for that to happen is to gather the collective wants of the collecting community and let Mattel know who we really want.

A couple of quick things.

1. This is Dwayne McDuffie’s last movie, the last thing he wrote before he died.  I hope his family gets something out of this.  Knowing he is gone makes me more sad that we never got Static Shock the series on DVD and never got toys of that show.  Dwayne, know that you are missed by even those who knew you only through your writing and producing of animated shows like Justice League Unlimited and Ben 10.

The recent sets have focused on one main character and sometimes a few sublines. Web of Spiderman. Captain America. Superman. Incredible Hulk. Galactic Guardians is going to be more widespread in focus. Then we get to Avengers Movie and Marvel’s Chaos War. When is the next DC set? Batman is going to be the focus of 2 upcoming sets, but before that we get Justice League. What is wrong with that? The size of the set.

Justice League is reported to be a 20+ size set. That means individual figure boosters and probably a preset box of 6 figures. The focus is on the Justice League in the new DC Universe. We have seen so far Deadman, Zatanna, Madame Xanadu and the Enchantress of the Justice League Dark title. So what is wrong? The fact that there are hundreds of characters that could be included in a full set. The Superman set had 54 pieces. The Incredible Hulk set had 45. Why can’t WizKids give us 52 pieces of the new 52 DC Universe?

When I decided which titles to try, I selected things that
1. I found the proposed story idea to be exciting.
2. Characters I wanted to read about that I had not in the past.
3. My old favorites.
4. Team books, which is what I started with 30 years ago.

I bought 12 titles.

Category 1: Stormwatch.

With Stormwatch, DC advertised this story well.  The Moon being alive and attacking the Earth.  The premise was classic old science fiction.  The characters are interesting – even though they do not wear costumes.  The story moves like a roller coaster.  I think it reminds me of Morrison’s JLA, where there were concepts which could have been entire mini-series which we only shown in a page.  Putting Martian Manhunter in here was a stroke of editorial genius.  It made people talk about the book and made JLA fans consider it.  I do wish the characters were a bit more instantly identifiable, and costumes would help, as sometimes I have trouble identifying who is who.  Four issues in, this is still my #1 comic.(...)

Ryan was engaging in two of our favorite past times here at AFi.  Talking about how he hopes Mattel will make some of his favorite characters AND reviving long dead threads.  While I’ll leave the sleeping threads to others, discussing the merits of one character over another is not something I can pass up.  In this case, a DCUC version of the classic Silver Age version of Adam Strange.  My take is not that creating this is good or bad, but why not use something else until Mattel gets around to it.

The other current competing line of DC 6 inch figures is DC Direct.  To be fair, DC Direct is actually a bunch of lines, where they are often artist specific versions.  This might bother some collectors, but the various groups give us characters which we can use to fill in our Mattel collection until Mattel makes them.  Above we have Ryan Choi Atom, Elongated Man, Mera, silver age Adam Strange, Geo Force and Metron.(...)

Star Trek HeroClix: Tactics puts you in command of Federation and Klingon vessels and is 100% compatible with the HeroClix core rules system.  Tactics is intended as a standalone game system and will exist outside of the Modern and Golden Age tournament environments.
