Once again, I find myself wondering if DC/WB wants us to even know this is being made. I have seen zero advertising for this release. An interesting note, this will be the first release where I have …

If you are a fan of the Young Justice TV show, like me, you might wish you could collect some form of figure of the characters on the show that reminded you of the show. Mattel offered this in 2 forms, 6 inch and 4 inch, both of which the general public rejected. Before they can offer something else, they and the mass market retailers – Walmart, Target, Kmart, Toys R Us – need to know why we rejected it.
I can only offer my own reasons. Price.

That’s right, its time once again to let Mattel know what the community wants for their current DC line.
This time we are talking YOUNG JUSTICE. Mattel has been doing a pretty good job with character selection, giving us a good variety between Young Justice team members, Justice League members, villains, and repaints. But we all know they could do better. The only way for that to happen is to gather the collective wants of the collecting community and let Mattel know who we really want.

Tell us your most wanted characters to see in the Mattel Young Justice Line.

Today sees the release of the next DC Animated movie, Justice League: Doom.
A couple of quick things.
1. This is Dwayne McDuffie’s last movie, the last thing he wrote before he died. I hope his family gets something out of this. Knowing he is gone makes me more sad that we never got Static Shock the series on DVD and never got toys of that show. Dwayne, know that you are missed by even those who knew you only through your writing and producing of animated shows like Justice League Unlimited and Ben 10.

As frequent readers know, I’ve posted a bunch of stuff about WizKids HeroClix gaming miniatures figures and the game itself. It might be a safe bet to guess that I like the miniatures and the game. And you would be right. But I have a complaint about an upcoming product that I wanted to share.
The recent sets have focused on one main character and sometimes a few sublines. Web of Spiderman. Captain America. Superman. Incredible Hulk. Galactic Guardians is going to be more widespread in focus. Then we get to Avengers Movie and Marvel’s Chaos War. When is the next DC set? Batman is going to be the focus of 2 upcoming sets, but before that we get Justice League. What is wrong with that? The size of the set.
Justice League is reported to be a 20+ size set. That means individual figure boosters and probably a preset box of 6 figures. The focus is on the Justice League in the new DC Universe. We have seen so far Deadman, Zatanna, Madame Xanadu and the Enchantress of the Justice League Dark title. So what is wrong? The fact that there are hundreds of characters that could be included in a full set. The Superman set had 54 pieces. The Incredible Hulk set had 45. Why can’t WizKids give us 52 pieces of the new 52 DC Universe?

One of the amazing things about WizKids HeroClix is the ever increasing variety of teams/armies you can make to play against your friends (or opponents in tournaments). The NECA/WizKids gallery does a good job of showing the packaging, but does a poor job of showing the potential of the game. To add to what they showed, I’d like to show off some of the teams my son and I have played recently.

As we prepare for Toy Fair, NECA and Wiz Kids are not taking a break. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday they have been previewing more pieces from their upcoming sets of HeroClix. Star Trek tactics – which involves ship battles has just released. The big push now is Galactic Guardians, their next upcoming major release.

DC just announced that 6 of its titles are being replaced with 6 new ones. Two of these, I had tried and dropped. Partially because the story did not stick with me. I like the characters enough, but I am also feeling the sting of needing to be frugal. Due to money issues, I dropped all my comics a while back. The “new 52″ at DC did what they had hoped. It got me back in the store. 5 months later, I am still feeling my way through what I am buying.
When I decided which titles to try, I selected things that
1. I found the proposed story idea to be exciting.
2. Characters I wanted to read about that I had not in the past.
3. My old favorites.
4. Team books, which is what I started with 30 years ago.
I bought 12 titles.
Category 1: Stormwatch.
With Stormwatch, DC advertised this story well. The Moon being alive and attacking the Earth. The premise was classic old science fiction. The characters are interesting – even though they do not wear costumes. The story moves like a roller coaster. I think it reminds me of Morrison’s JLA, where there were concepts which could have been entire mini-series which we only shown in a page. Putting Martian Manhunter in here was a stroke of editorial genius. It made people talk about the book and made JLA fans consider it. I do wish the characters were a bit more instantly identifiable, and costumes would help, as sometimes I have trouble identifying who is who. Four issues in, this is still my #1 comic.

Ryan, our fellow blogger, inspired me twice in the creation of this blog. First, I wanted to show how easy it is to write a blog. Second, he posted in the forums about something that made me want to respond. I could have responded in the thread, but since Julius gave me this soapbox (and pays me 3 times as much as Ryan ), I figured I’d post it here.
Ryan was engaging in two of our favorite past times here at AFi. Talking about how he hopes Mattel will make some of his favorite characters AND reviving long dead threads. While I’ll leave the sleeping threads to others, discussing the merits of one character over another is not something I can pass up. In this case, a DCUC version of the classic Silver Age version of Adam Strange. My take is not that creating this is good or bad, but why not use something else until Mattel gets around to it.
The other current competing line of DC 6 inch figures is DC Direct. To be fair, DC Direct is actually a bunch of lines, where they are often artist specific versions. This might bother some collectors, but the various groups give us characters which we can use to fill in our Mattel collection until Mattel makes them. Above we have Ryan Choi Atom, Elongated Man, Mera, silver age Adam Strange, Geo Force and Metron.

Someone once asked me to explain HeroClix. After some practice, I have come up with this.
“Its like Chess with Super-Heroes, except that if you want to play with 4 knights and no bishops, that is not only OK, it is encouraged and expected.” At this point, I should add that you can also use characters from popular video games (Halo) and movies (Lord of the Rings).
Just like in Chess, each piece has its own unique abilities. It comes down to 6 values. Movement. Attack. Defense. Damage. Range. Cost.
