DC Direct was kind of cagey about the look of the Sinestro figure coming in Green Lantern wave 5. When the new DC universe was revealed, we knew why. Sinestro was a Green Lantern again. But for some reason, the pictures of the figure never made it out to the …

I missed this week”s episode of Young Justice, but two weeks ago, they ran one that blew my mind.
Why? Because of all the characters that made an appearance in the episode “Revelaqtion”. I think at this point, enough time has passed that I can write this without spoilers.
#1. The Secret Society of Super Villains. Batman gives the team of villains which announce themselves this classic name. 7 new villians who have not previously appeared on the show.

While I was at NYCC, I spent some time at the DC Direct booth asking questions about their upcoming product. Here is my brief interview with them.
1. What is new at today’s show?
a) Hawkman: JLA figure.
b) Hawkgirl II: Ami-Comi statue.
c) Joker: Batman Black and White statue.
d) Joker: Arkham City figure.
e) Green Lantern Animated inspired statues: Green Lantern – Hal Jordan, Red Lantern – Atrocitus, Blue Lantern – Saint Walker.
2. The new Arkham City wave has only 3 figures. Will this be the future of DC Direct, 3 figure waves?

“I now hold omnipotence. What should I do with such almighty power? The answer to that is actually quite simple: Anything I want.
Anything. I am incapable of error. Any result that displeases me I can simply reverse. There is nothing I need to worry on, for I am Thanos. And …

This past Wednesday concluded the first month of DC Comics revamp of their universe. While some concepts were pretty much left as is (Batman and Green Lantern), most were revised or restarted completely. Along with this came many costume changes.
Justice League is now the front and center comic it should have been (and used to be). This is also translating into the action figure world. The first figures relating to the new DC universe will be based upon the new Justice League comic. DC Direct revealed some of these at San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) earlier this year.
Looking across the landscape of the new DC universe, what do you hope they will make most?

I love this. I love that Mattel made these characters. Why? Because that title up there is exactly how these toys would have been advertised back in the late 70′s. I am a child of the SuperFriends era. That is why these characters resonate with me.
These characters were added to the SuperFriends show to give the team a diversity. But as a young boy and then a young teenager, that escaped me. They were simply more cool characters to see using fantastic powers to save people in trouble and stop the villains.
I am very glad that Mattel made these.

Everyone else at AFi seems to have weighed in on the DCUC Subscription, so why not me?
I was among the first to tell Mattel they were doing a lousy job with character selection in JLU. That is why I started with the JLU Most Wanted Polls here at AFi. With DCUC I never had that feeling. DCUC gave us character selection from across the DC universe. Wave 1 gave us Batman, Penguin, Red Tornado, Orion, Etrigan, Metamorpho. With that assortment, we got
2 Batman characters
1 Silver Age JLA
2 Satellite JLA
2 Morrison JLA
2 JL International
1 JL Europe
2 Outsiders
1 New God
and whatever groups Etrigan falls into.
Wave 2 gave us more JLA, more Batman characters, Superman, Aquaman characters and a Flash villain. Wave 3 gave us more JLA, Green Lantern characters, more Batman characters, Titans characters. Wave 4 gave us more JLA, Wonder Woman characters, JL International, Titans, and Batman Beyond. Wave 5 gave us more JLA, Superman characters, Batman characters. Wave 6 gave us Superman, Shazam characters, more JLA, more New Gods, more JLI. That is 6 waves of great stuff.

I’ve always been a fan of team books. Team books let you read about a whole bunch of heroes for the price of one comic. My first exposure to team books was Justice League of America #148 back in the late 70′s. This book not only featured 5 members of the JLA, but 5 members of the Justice Society and 9 members of the Legion of Super Heroes as well. Soon I found myself buying books featuring all 3 of those teams. I also enjoyed Batman and Superman team up books. Solo features just felt too expensive. After the JLA broke up, I did read solo books, most notably Wally West Flash, Green Lantern (Hal then Kyle), and Wonder Woman.

My thirst for team books led me to The New Teen Titans in 1980. I added the Avengers and West Coast Avengers. I had avoided the X-Men because everyone said their story had too much back story and it would be too hard to understand. In 1990, I started with X-Force #1 and followed quickly with X-Men #1, Uncanny X-Men, and X-Factor.

JLU Fans are a very vocal group here at AFI. Tomorrow we are getting the opportunity to add one more character to our collections, a special character, S.T.R.I.P.E. (Twice is enough for all those periods.) STRIPE is special for a number of reasons….

I went to see the Green Lantern movie last evening. I’m not going to give a critical review here. There are tons of those already. I just really enjoyed the whole experience and wanted to share that.

The next release in Warner Bros / DC Animated movies came out today (June 7, 2011). Feeding into the marketing frenzy of the live action Green Lantern movie is Green Lantern: Emerald Knights. Like Batman: Gotham Knight, GLEK is 6 chapters that wrap into one overall story. But you already knew that. To me, as a fan, there are a few things that stand out more than the movie itself. Advertising. Where is it? I feel like this WB/DC release has not only been poorly advertised, it has completely fallen off the radar. Maybe I’ve been busy. Maybe I’ve been watching the wrong TV channels. But there seems to almost be a void in relation to letting people know this movie is out there.

I’ve recently re-thought about the comics I am buying, and a lot of them no longer fit into the realm of getting a good return of enjoyment. Avengers (and really any Marvel Comic) The recent relaunch of the Avengers group of books had me excited, but not at $4 each. Its kind of odd. At $2.99, I would have bought 1 or maybe even 2. At $3.99, I’ll buy none. Legion of Super-Heroes I like the Legion of Super-Heroes, the team. I enjoyed seeing them in the JLA/JSA cross-over. I bought the issues of Action Comics which followed up on that story. And I bought the new LSH title. Until I realized I was paying $3.99 an issue. Its kind of easy to miss when you are buying a bunch of comics every week. I know the price will go down, but its the principle of the thing. And then there is the fact that the stories were kind of dull and felt like retreads. Mind controlled Ultra Boy creating random destruction? Boring. Saturn Girl worried about her kidnapped kids? We already did that. One of them was sent back through time and became Validus. Besides, I wanted to read about the Legion, not their kids.

Don’t forget in all the hype of Toy Fair that we also have this to look forward too! All Star Superman is one of my favorite recent stories. Like Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, I’m glad to see it getting the animated movie treatment. I’ve been trying to think of what other stories I’d like to see.
