Top Ten Action Figures of 2012

December 31st, 2012

As the year comes to an end, it’s been tough been trying to decide who will make my short list of Top Ten Action Figures for 2012.  It’s been tough to pare it down to ten, with some really great toys just missing the cut.  My criteria? well, the web has enough articulate, detailed, and fantastic reviewers – this is just what I thought looked cool on the shelf, and gave me that “wow!” feeling when I opened it up and played with them.

*ahem*

Yes, I open and play with my toys.

Anyway, instead of my usual overblown pontification, I’ll keep it short and just post the pics…

Times Past – The Best Christmas Gift Ever

December 28th, 2012

Just for the holidays, I’m reposting one of my favorite Times Past recollections…I hope you all had a safe and happy holiday. Enjoy!

- – - – -

With the holidays here, this seemed like a good time to share my memory of receiving one of the greatest gifts ever. Read on!

1985.  Arguably the greatest toy year ever, with Masters of The Universe, Transformers and G.I.Joe at the heights of popularity.  During that spring I had received the G.I.Joe Snow Cat vehicle, and with it came the extensive fold-out catalog showcasing all the new G.I.Joe products that would be released that year.  I poured over the photos of the new figures and vehicles, circling the ones I wanted to get.

And then I saw it.

There, at the bottom of the page.  The single greatest thing I had ever seen up to that point in my life – the U.S.S. Flagg Aircraft Carrier.

Action Figure Collecting: The End of Days?

December 19th, 2012

The End is Nigh!
ok, ok, maybe you were expecting that from me, being the resident AFi Conspiracy Theorist and all.  Of course I couldn’t resist referencing the upcoming(?) Mayan Calendar Event.  But within our hobby, there is another End-of-Days Scenario unfolding.
It’s the end of the (collecting) world as we know it…but do you feel fine?

Thoughts on the Dark Knight Rises Theater Tragedy

July 20th, 2012

By now, you’ve likely heard the terrible news we woke up to in Colorado this morning.  It is a sad day.

This happened in my own community, just a few miles from my home.  That’s a violating experience.  I appreciate all the calls, texts, and social media messages checking on our …

The DCU and DCnU: What Should Have Been

June 20th, 2012

Note: I began writing this article last fall, when the topic was a bit more relevant. But I think the idea still has merit, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on how the DCnU was developed, now that we have some time and distance to reflect upon the original event and transition…
-  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -

The DCnU. We are nine months into the New 52, and I can say with certainty that I am no longer interested in reading about the DCnU. It’s disappointing, and sad.I’m not here to nitpick about continuity and costumes, or argue about the sales of DC and the general health of the industry, nor am I willing to discuss the legitimacy of stubborn, Silver Age fanboys that may no longer be in DC’s Target Market and how they are resistant to change. But I am writing about one thing:

It could have, and should have, been different.

Happy Father’s Day

June 14th, 2012

Father’s Day is this weekend, and what better way to celebrate than to revisit and expand upon my article from last year?

Some fathers go fishing or hunting with their sons; others bond over golf, or tinker with cars.  I have friends that regularly camp with their sons, and play guitar, and build their relationship through sports.  And sadly, some fathers don’t share much of anything with their sons at all.

But my own father, he and I always had three things we shared – playing and coaching athletics (basketball and baseball in particular); an unwavering love for the hapless Chicago Cubs; and most importantly…collecting.

Times Past: Scalper Encounter

June 6th, 2012

I stumbled across this amusing account of my encounter with the oft-reviled “scalper” collector from 2004.  This was posted to RTM and the AFi forums, before it was deleted during the Great Hack of the 2005.  Keep in mind, I have obviously added anecdotal aspects for the sake of entertainment, and reflects my feelings and my reaction to the events of that morning.  While my personal views of so-called “scalpers” have changed over time, I kept the original writing intact for the sake of authenticity.

I’ve read these types of stories many times on the different boards, but now I have to share a wild and dramatic tale of my own. My up-close encounter with…

A Real, Live Scalper!

Colorado Freedom Memorial – VICTORY!

June 4th, 2012

I have been out of town for the past ten days, but wanted to share something very cool that happened on the eve of the recent Memorial Day weekend…as many of you know, I am a huge supporter of the Colorado Freedom Memorial.  To recap, this would be the first monument in America to honor all local veterans of all wars, by name, in one place.  You can read more about the details, and the numerous setbacks that have occurred HERE.

On May 25th, my good pal and mastermind behind this project, Rick Crandall, held the annual KEZW radiothon fundraiser for the CFM.  It went well, but the project still needed to raise at least $400k to start building.  We weren’t quite there, but then something amazing happened.

The Han Snowlo Project: Part II

February 7th, 2012

The Han Snowlo Project: part II.

So I started this goofy experiment in my last blog entry.  Over the course of Thursday through Sunday, I tracked the rate of snowfall using a broomstick and my son’s Han Solo.

You can see the progress of the snow below, along with the anguished plastic cries of the non-carbonite frozen Corellian.

The Han Snowlo Project: Part I

February 2nd, 2012

If you’ve watched the news today, you may have seen the weather forecast for Denver. Snow, wind, snow, wind, snow…you get the idea. The NOAA has predicted between 12″ – 24″ of snow for the Denver area, along with near-blizzard conditions overnight through tomorrow.

Fun.

So anticipating that schools will be closed tomorrow and wanting nothing to do with household responsibilities, my son and I settled upon our own homemade snow measurement system…

HipsterReview: threeA Blind Cowboy and Ghost Horse

January 26th, 2012

Since ordering the 1/6 scale Blind Cowboy and Ghost Horse Super Set from threeA Toys many months ago, I have been anxiously awaiting the delivery of the enormous box…and yesterday it arrived.  I haven’t been able to stop messing with it and nearly took the day off work to play with it, so I thought I’d provide a quick review for those wondering what the big deal is with this magnificent beast.

For those wondering, threeA Toys (3A) produces limited-edition products based on the crazy-cool creations of the artist Ashley Wood and the universe he’s imagined with his paintbrush.  Blind Cowboy is part of the ‘Popbot’ section of the threeA universe.

You can read more about 3A and the various toylines here and here.

Here’s the specific entry on Blind Cowboy from the ThreeA wiki.

His family killed by a gang of deranged robots, his eyesight taken as payment for someone else’s debt. He now wears the rag reputedly used to mop the bloody brow of the assassinated JFK, the turgid rag now giving a clarity of vision, a clarity of justice and revenge to the Blind Cowboy. His is only friend, a horse named Ghost!

It shouldn’t be this hard to write a blog.

January 10th, 2012

Five blog entries in 2011.

Really?

Seriously?

It can’t be that hard…can it?

I mean, there’s plenty to discuss over the past year…MattyCollector frustrations, the whole SaveDCUC effort, the slow death of JLU, the nostalgia of toylines like G.I.Joe and ThunderCats, the appeal of toylines like threeA and Hot Toys, the depressing debacle of the DCnU, the unavoidable mentioning of Tim Tebow, films, books, art…you would think that I could squeeze out at least a few simple blogs here and there over the course of twelve months, right?

Apparently not.

Superfly and his Monster: Part I

July 1st, 2011

OK, so my last entry described all the creepy goings-on in Missouri. The haunted places, the strange deaths, and the MoMo – Missouri’s answer to Bigfoot. Still with me?

Since I grew up in Arizona, you’re likely wondering why exactly was in Missouri?  Well, my family owns a summer cabin there, just outside of the small town of Warrenton and not far from Washington and Union (reportedly one of the most haunted places in MO).  The cabin itself is located in a private community, far off the main highway and at the end of a 2 mile winding gravel road through the deep woods.  At times, this brief trip can be very disconcerting, no matter the time of day. In daylight, there are all sorts of shadows and uneasy moments of odd silence. At night, the mind plays tricks and you feel like there could be anything lurking in the darkness, quietly watching your every move.

Superfly and his Monster: Prologue (update)

June 21st, 2011

My intentions were to post this story in it’s entirety through a few blog posts, but of course I became busy, which is all-too-common of late with almost everything regarding AFi.  I had additional entries ready to go last Fall/Winter, but part of the appeal of this story is …
