Hello, and welcome to the first "common" edition of whatever this thing is that I call a blog. I’m going to be not only highlighting the rarites I have in my collection, but also everything else…no matter how common. Yes, I know y’all are chomping at the bit for my 12-back Lex Luthor highlight, but rest assured that will be when I’m well past running out of ideas here.
With the second series of Super Powers figures, many fan favorites and then "B-Listers" were produced, as well as a multitude of New God goodness. The "heaviest hitter" in that wave was Martian Manhunter. What makes this figure pretty neat to highlight is that, to this day, it remains one of the best sculpts of an action figure ever. Likeness, accuracy of costume, etc…this is not only one of the best figures of the line, but it could also hold up against some of today’s aisle offerings (Hello, Infinite Heroes! I’m looking your way!).
The card I have has the "Free Poster Offer" stripe on the front. This is true for all my carded 12- and 23-back figures simply because I think it’s the cleanest of all the offer cards and because I like uniformity in my display. The only figure I’ve not been able to locate on such a card is Darkseid with a clear bubble. Trust me, my OCD and I are very annoyed at this fact. Anyway, I digress…
One thing I like about the Super Powers line is that every character had a "logo" and/or special font. No generic typeface like the Star Wars or Secret Wars lines. To me that adds to the overall uniqueness of the line as a whole. Also, again, I have to say that the figure sculpt is definitely one of the best in any 5" line, and can certainly hold up today. The cloth cape even works well as opposed to a lot of the sculpted soft plastic capes prevalent nowadays. Oh, and squeeze his legs together and he’ll punch the daylights outta ya. Seriously…ask Tyr.
Okay, the bio card. Standard on all Super Powers releases (even the foreign ones), there’s something here that bears calling attention to. I’d like to know what quality grade of hash the DC Comics guys were smoking when they came up with adversaries for J’onn. Seriously? "Commander Blanx?" "Mr. V of Vulture?" Really? Characters so lame I can’t even get a clear image of either of them via Google for this blog entry? Honestly? Ugh. Lame, lame, lame. Seriously, where’s Mike SDcomics when ya need him? I’ll bet he’s got scans of their only cover appearances or smileys modeled after them or something…I could sure use those right now because pictorial info on these guys is nonexistant. As I stated before…lame.
Remember…he’s #10, and he’s NEW! He’s #10, and he’s NEW! And, he likes Oreos!
A reminder that if you want me to review something specific, please drop me a line. Until then, be well all you Super Powers Fans!
