Thanks, everyone, and extra thanks to superfriend for the link. I'm actually planning to add some insulation to my attic this spring to help reduce the cost of keeping my home cool during the summer. I'm also going to reroute one of the ducts under my house for added efficiency and replace all of my light bulbs with CFLs. I tracked down a similar list from my local power provider, so I'll give that a look to see if there are any other steps I can take.

Thanks again to everyone for taking the time to comment and add feedback.

Times are tough, indeed. We've switched to generic brands ourselves and discovered that there really isn't much of a difference. For instance, a can of Geisha tuna is just as good as Star-Kist, Chicken of the Sea, or Bumble Bee. And much chunkier, with less water. 3 cans will run you the cost of 1 from the bigger names. Thanks for all the great advice and congrats on your debut!

Great stuff. Nice job on the first blog!

If I might add, check with your local energy (electric / natural gas) company for tips on how to make your home less expensive. Like this one: http://www.thinksmartthinkgreen.com/

Consider whether or not you really need to A) make all those trips to the store, B) be a completist. HeroClix with some of its pieces fetching over 100$ each has taught me how to be content and not be a completist.

Great initial blog, Jon! Fantastic points throughout, and as someone who hits the local farmer's markets frequently down here I can definitely say you'll save a TON in that regard...all while helping local merchants stay afloat. Good vibes all-around.

Peace,

Fantastic blog, Jon. A lot of good, common sense wisdom. When I went to Walmart this morning and saw the new Marvel 3 3/4's for the first time I got a little loopy. Then I saw the price tag: $8.44! Gah!

For a number of years I've been restricted to a pretty tight toy budget for marital harmony reasons. So I haven't always been able to get all that I've wanted. But this has helped me to be smart about how I go about collecting.

Pretty much the only suggestion that will help me, given my rigid allowance, is #4. Its a good idea and I think I'll start gathering some stuff up!
