So here it is, nearly five months since my last entry. That’s terrible.

Life has been unbelievably busy, with lots of changes and transitions going on in my personal life, and unfortunately my participation with AFi suffers. But I have more than a dozen different blogs half-written already, so my goal over the next few months is to finish and post them for your enjoyment/mockery.

You might even see…the rest of the Bigfoot story. No foolin’.

Earlier today I attended a screening of Return of the Jedi to celebrate not just May the 4th (Star Wars Day) BUT the 30th Anniversary of the film. It was screened at the theater where it premiered in 1983, the Egyptian theater. This is the first time in 30 years that the movie has been screened there so it was quite the triumphant return as Return of the Jedi will be screening there all day!(...)

I’ve long thought that the lack of an easily identifiable symbol is part of what is holding Aquaman back.  He needed a chest symbol.  He did have kind of a symbol.  Every so often an artist would put an “A” of some style on his belt.  Then with a month of covers with symbols on it during Brightest Day, the stylized belt buckle became the symbol for Aquaman.

Now Graphitti Designs takes it the next step and delivers a shirt in the traditional orange color of Aquaman with this symbol emblazened on the chest.  Here it is.  Now you too can wear Aquaman’s shirt.

The only thing missing is a shape behind the symbol to make it more distinct from its background.  Superman has a pentagon, Flash and Green Lantern use circles.  Aquaman should buck the round trend and have a triangle.  Color? The green of his pants of course.

Truth in disclosure: I own a number of GD shirts which I have bought both at cons and directly from their site.  I think their products are top notch.  This shirt I spotted on one of my opponents at a recent HeroClix gaming event.  When I got home I immediately looked for it at the GD site.  Comic cover is from The Grand Comics Database.

Bringing back the original cast from the prior Teen Titans show, this should be a hit with the younger crowd and somewhat nostalgic to fans of the previous show.  They even remixed the opening song to make the new one.

Starting out as one of the DC Shorts run during the DC Nation block, Teen Titans Go is the first of these to be turned into a series with full half hour episodes.  I think I recall reading that one of the goals of the DC Shorts was to try out material and see if it passed the test to become a show.  Congratulations to Teen Titans Go to making it to a full show.(...)

In the past, it has often been difficult to field a team that feels like a team unless you were playing a high point game.  Also, members of teams were often released a few at a  time, making collecting a team a long process of waiting.  Now this all changes.  Team bases mean you can play many more characters at once, as part of the team base.  Team bases also mean that all members of a specific era are more likely to be made.  Case in point, for the first time in years, we are getting a new Raven figure.  While Beast Boy and Cyborg have been getting some love recently, we have not seen Raven, in any form, since the set named Icons.

Today  I will be  reviewing the Marvel Knight Animation of INHUMANS. Before I begin I’ll give a brief background on what you’re in for animation wise. Marvel Knights Animation is a very unique endeavor. My  first and only other experience like  this was with Iron Man: Extremis, which is available on Netflix instant. An odd yet effective mixture of  animation and  graphic art that makes motion  comics look  like comic  strips in comparison. They have a dreamlike quality that worked for me with Iron Man but is perfect for INHUMANS. If you  have Netflix and are not familiar with the Iron Man: Extremis storyline  (which I believe the Iron Man 3 borrows from) it’s a fun  watch that you can spread out or enjoy in one sitting.(...)

Last year at San Diego Comic Con, I had the pleasure of meeting the fine folks at Toymunkey Studios.  I had my assignments, I photographed their booth, spent some time with them learning more about their product lines, the usual convention stuff.  Toymunkey was a little different, however, than other new companies.  Firstly, their “Top Munkey” Scott was someone who has been around the toy industry most of his life.  As a fan, a collector, and working for various companies.  It was clear this wasn’t his first rodeo, and it shows.  I have been given the honor of being the first to review their inaugural piece, The Red Pyramid Thing 1/6 scale PVC statue based on the very popular film and video game franchise “Silent Hill”

Those of us who collect 3¾” action figures have seen articulation reduced in some lines to keep prices down around $6, while fully articulated figures cost in the neighborhood of $10. Green Lantern, STAR WARS, The Dark Knight Rises, Iron Man 3, Ultimate Spider-Man, and even G.I. JOE: Retaliation vehicle drivers have all the posing potential of a 1978 Luke Skywalker. As a collector, there are positives and negatives to be found in this new strategy. One obvious positive is that collectors still have options with a fantastic balance of sculpted detail and articulation in the single-carded G.I. JOE releases, Marvel Universe, and the forthcoming STAR WARS Black Series. Another positive is that $6 options in the action figure aisles help keep toys affordable for parents, and the significance of that for the future of action figure collecting cannot be exaggerated. Someday, many of the kids whose moms are buying them $6 Iron Man and Spider-Man figures will graduate to buying their own $10 Marvel Universe figures. The flip side, of course, is that we have fewer options for action figures featuring the full range of articulation we’ve enjoyed over the last several years.

Other trends include fewer weapons and accessories being packaged with some figures and a lack of stands. While it may bother some hobbyists, this is one direction with which I’m entirely at peace. I end up replacing most of my 3¾” figures’ weapons with items from Marauder “Gun-Runners” anyway. If I need stands, Marauder has those, too. But there is something I’d like to see packed with the figures more often, and so to toy manufacturers, I make my plea:

Animation
1. I want Cartoon Network to make the effort to broadcast this show more than once a week.  While they are building up a stable of episodes, I want to see them run episodes of the previous Teen Titans Go show to help build the audience for new product.
2. I want the show itself to expand the cast beyond the 5 main heroes to include all the heroes who had major roles in the old show.  The main cast was always:
Robin,
Cyborg,
Beast Boy
Starfire,
Raven.
But other characters appeared frequently as well.
Speedy,
Aqualad,
Bumble Bee,
Mas,
Minos
eventually joined forces to become a 2nd branch of Teen Titans.
Kid Flash
also was a frequent guest.  I’d like to see all of them in the new show.

LEGO Batman: The Movie – DC Super Heroes Unite features the definitive voice of Lex Luthor, Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption, SpongeBob SquarePants), who set the standard for Luthor’s vocal tones in the landmark Warner Bros. Animation television production, Superman: The Animated Series.

Toys for this will be interesting to see.  Mattel passed on the license for the prior series.  Sales of Young Justice toys were less than hoped for.  Green Lantern Animated toys were never made.  Based on comments in the forums and some of my prior blogs, Young Justice’s biggest enemy was the price point.  So will Mattel put out a Teen Titans Go product line that will meet the expectations of buyers at a price they are willing to pay?

But, Doctor Who is turning 50 this year. Amazing. 50 years and still going strong. Sure, it had a bit of a break there in the late 80s/early 90s as far as televised adventures go. But, the Doctor still traveled through time and space on the printed page and in audio adventures during the television downtime.

I love anniversaries. Especially significant ones. Doctor Who celebrating it’s 50th Anniversary this year comes with all the expected hoopla and merchandise and I am really excited by it all.(...)

Marvel Comics recently launched their Marvel NOW re-branding (“it’s not a reboot!”) of their publishing efforts. Being a pretty dyed-in-the-wool trade-waiter I’ve not read any of these yet. However, thanks to various online comics sites such as Newsarama and Comic Book Resources I’ve seen many of the new looks that the various Marvel characters are sporting. Some are terrific, while some are scratch-your-head, “what in the world are they thinking?” bad…and, frankly, most important to me, many would make great toys!(...)

2013 has been a year of change for me and my family. We’ve had a major shift in the focus of our lives, which led to a move cross country from the Columbus, Ohio area to Portland, Oregon.

2012 also showed a marked decreased in toy collecting for me for a variety of reasons. A combination of just not having the money to spend on toys, preferring to spend what little disposable income I had on tabletop games like Warhammer and Warmachine, and some pretty poor toy distribution all added up to a lack of new figures on my shelves.(...)

1985.  Arguably the greatest toy year ever, with Masters of The Universe, Transformers and G.I.Joe at the heights of popularity.  During that spring I had received the G.I.Joe Snow Cat vehicle, and with it came the extensive fold-out catalog showcasing all the new G.I.Joe products that would be released that year.  I poured over the photos of the new figures and vehicles, circling the ones I wanted to get.

And then I saw it.

There, at the bottom of the page.  The single greatest thing I had ever seen up to that point in my life – the U.S.S. Flagg Aircraft Carrier.

Teen Titans HeroClix

Wow.  Titans across the ages.  We already knew that the 80′s Perez Teen Titans and the modern nu52 Teen Titans were in this set.  Now we can see that the whole spectrum of Titans history is in the set, from the earliest team.  And this preview also shows us a new team base, the four characters on one base.  Yeah, I could get very excited about this release (Currently enjoying the Batman set and about to start buying Streets of Gotham).

Wolverine and the X-Men HeroClix by WizKids

Wolverine and the X-Men is a set which is due out sometime next summer.  The big draw is that it will focus back to the costumes of the 90′s, while the last set which featured the X-Men (Giant Sized X-Men: GSX) was geared more towards modern looks.  As I was taking a break from the game when GSX came out and many pieces from GSX are expensive on the secondary market, and I am a fan of that era of the X-Men, I am looking forward to this set.

I really like the idea of a Professor X and Magneto duo figure.  There is enough history to justify them working together cooperatively.  Also, WizKids earlier this year added a mechanic called “split” which allows you to take a duo figure and replace it mid game with figures of each character that is on the duo.  This is great here in that storywise it would represent getting to a point where these two leaders disagree and go their separate ways.  The classic Colossus is also very welcome as the last version was a duo with Wolverine and a super-rare figure making it harder to get.  Yeah, this is going to be a good set.

Iron Man HeroClix

My initial reaction was that this was the Iron Man movie set.  Apparently it is a comic based set.  But it must be very far off.  Spider-man, Teen Titans and Wolverine and the X-Men sets are coming before this one.  Glad to see Iron Monger and War Machine represented.  War Machine was conspicuously absent from both the Avengers Movie set (it felt like the Iron Man movies should be represented) and the Chaos War set which was heavily Avengers filled.  I still hope that the Iron Man movie set includes characters from all 3 Iron Man movies.

Today, at gaming stores across the land, table top miniatures enthusiasts got an early Christmas present.  A new release of WizKids popular HeroClix game, Streets of Gotham (SOG).  SOG is a sister set to the recent Batman set with many themes from Batman carried across into SOG.  Birds of Prey characters are a new theme in this set which continues the Justice League International, Wildcats and Batman Family themes.

Previewed figures for this set include: Black Canary, Blue Beetle (Ted Kord), Fire, Ice, Calendar Man, Mr. Zsasz, Dove, Huntress, David Cain, Lady Shiva, Deathstroke, Robin (Tim Drake) and the usual Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.  This set also includes both pre and post nu52 versions of characters including new versions of Arsenal, Starfire, Katana and brand new character Starling.

Two of my former fellow players, one from that place, Mark, and another I had played with years ago, Randy, both recommended a certain new place.  I emailed them and it seemed like a good place, but I was unsure, as it was an hour away.  Both Mark and Randy had also played against my son, Ben (Ben is 18).

As the day grew closer, Randy and I exchanged FB messages about the No Man’s Land event and the new Batman set (see previous blog).  What I did not tell Randy was that Ben would be coming too.

The day came.  Ben and I left Coventry, headed for Bellingham.  We only missed 2 turns while driving there, and the second one turned out not to matter as we ended up on the correct street anyway.  When we got there, we found a small crowded comic store filled with excited HeroClix players.  We met new people and reminiced with Mark and Randy.  Randy was happily surprised to see Ben.  Reconnecting was cool.(...)

At comic and gaming shops across the land, folks will be buying and playing the new pieces in tournaments.  There are probably some being held this evening if they can sell product at the stroke of midnight.

So those who know me know that I have a profound love of Transformers.  It’s one of my main focuses in collecting.  The arrival of a new Masterpiece Transformer is a very special day in my household.  To be fair, I have a love/hate relationship with them.  Sometimes they’re absolutely brilliant.  Grimlock, MP-10 Optimus Prime, Megatron.  Genious.  Then there are the ones that test the limits of my patience.  First issue Starscream (what were they thinking?), Rodimus Prime (absolute disaster).  You get my point.

Sideswipe (Lambor for those of you who don’t know) was my very first Transformer, and my very favorite of the original G1 Autobots.  Without going in to the trappings of a long back story, I was both excited and anxious when he and his mold-mate Red Alert were announced.  Would he be everything I’d hoped?  Would it suck?  I’m happy to report he falls in the category of the former.  Big Time.
