Ah, December 31st. We meet again.
In a few hours we fall headlong into a new year. 2013. Still no sign of flying cars.
2013 has been a year of change for me and my family. We’ve had a major shift in the focus of our lives, which led to a move cross country from the Columbus, Ohio area to Portland, Oregon.
2012 also showed a marked decreased in toy collecting for me for a variety of reasons. A combination of just not having the money to spend on toys, preferring to spend what little disposable income I had on tabletop games like Warhammer and Warmachine, and some pretty poor toy distribution all added up to a lack of new figures on my shelves.
But, here comes 2013. Toy Fair is about a month and a half away. Every year I know better than to get to excited for Toy Fair, but alas I give in to the excitement in the air. There’s quite a bit I’m looking forward to in the coming year.
NECA is on my radar like never before with their upcoming 3-3/4″ product for Gears of War and a to-be-announced license (some speculate that to be The Lone Ranger, but that would just be too good to be true for me).
Hasbro is a big question mark. Given their distribution snafus this past year, and their personnel shakeups (read: layoffs) I don’t know what to expect from them anymore. Curious to see where GI Joe will go this year. Star Wars toys haven’t interested me in a few years now, but I always hope (I’d really like some new Cantina Band Members). Marvel Universe? Who knows. It’s sure to be pushed aside in favor of Thor 2 and The Wolverine.
The Bridge Direct got off to a very strong start releasing a nice batch of really well done figures for The Hobbit. But, with no future waves planned until Summer I worry for the future of Middle Earth in the toy realm. I hope we at least get all the dwarves in the 3-3/4″ scale. But, there’s so much more that can be made.
DC Collectibles is doing more 3-3/4″ stuff with the continuation of the Green Lantern Convention 2 packs, and the upcoming Injustice: Gods Among Us 2 packs which look really sharp. Curious to see what else they have up their sleeve.
Character Options/Underground Toys is moving the main Doctor Who line to 3-3/4″ scale in 2013 (Classics will stay at 5″) and I’m super-excited to see what’s coming for that line.
Mattel? Ah, Mattel. You once commanded the majority of my toy spending budget. Now, next to nothing. As I’ve tried to focus my collecting on the 3-3/4″ figures as much as possible I’ve purchased less and less from the worlds #1 toymaker. After this years Dark Knight Rises product, and last years Green Lantern product I’m expecting more of the same for Man of Steel. I might get a 3-3/4″, 5 points of articulation Superman figure…maybe. But, beyond that? Hope there’re some surprises at Toy Fair.
But, the Four Horsemen? Now there’s a different tale. I look forward to new Outer Space Men releases (well, the Infinity versions that is. I don’t have the funds, nor the interest in the various colored versions) and I’m super-excited to see what they’ve got planned for their newest license, Power Lords.
Meanwhile, I’ll continue to grow my High Elves army for Warhammer Fantasy Battles, my Trollbloods for Hordes, and start up the Retribution of Scyrah for Warmachine with the release of their plastic starter box in February. Not too mention Games Workshop’s product for The Hobbit.
So, how about you? What’s your 2013 collecting looking like at this point?
