Well, Toy Fair 2013 is in the history books.
For me, this was one of the better Toy Fairs of recent memory. Well, part of the reason was technically outside of Toy Fair proper and that would be the unveiling of the Four Horsemen’s upcoming Power Lords revival at their Toypocalypse event.
I am so stinking excited for this line, it’s hard to describe.
I remember getting Barlowe’s Guide to Extraterrestrials back in 1979 when it was first released. I can still picture it on the new release wall of the book department at Gemco in San Jose, CA (same shelf upon which I would also find and buy Origins of Marvel Comics and Splinter of the Mind’s Eye). Anyway, back to Barlowe’s Guide. I had read many of the classic science fiction novels upon which the illustrations in the book were based. I ate that book up! I loved Barlowe’s style. So, a few years later when Power Lords hit I was instantly drawn to it. I don’t recall when (or especially how) I learned of Wayne Barlowe’s involvement in the line, but when I did I wasn’t surprised. I got several of the figures. I picked up the mini-series from DC Comics. Simply put, I dug the Power Lords.
And, yet, I kinda hated them at the same time.
Well, perhaps ‘hate’ is a bit hard. The best way I can express it is that I loved the concept, but was disappointed in the execution. I really didn’t like the sculpting. I didn’t like the plastic used. Stuff like that. But, boy, I loved the concepts.
As the years went on (and on…and on…and on…) Power Lords became something of a dim memory. The comics were tucked away in a long box buried in my parents garage. Most of my figures went missing, with only Sydot remaining. Over the past few years, every once in awhile in interviews someone from the Four Horsemen, usually Eric Treadaway, would mention Power Lords. Then there would be the occasional “We’d love to bring back Power Lords someday” comment. And the property would start creeping up into my more accessible memory and take root.
Then, in late 2012, the countdown website went up at Powerlordsreturn.com. I had a hunch that, because of their mentions of the line in the past, that the Horsemen would be involved. But, what would it be and what would it look like? Then, on the day the world didn’t end, the official announcement came. Power Lords were coming back as all-new action figures by the Four Horsemen, and to the dismay of some collectors but to my own joy, they would be 4″ scale! YES!
Over the past couple of days while the Four Horsemen’s Toypocalypse show ran concurrently with Toy Fair the new prototypes were unveiled to the public at last and they are fan-freakin’-tastic! Now, after all these years, the execution is going to match the concepts and Power Lords gets a second chance at greatness! I can’t wait!
If you haven’t seen these gorgeous figures yet, you can check them out right here in AFi’s Toy Fair galleries!
