Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! My DCUC Collection just got a little cooler!
So I was on my way back from picking up my mail (which included DCUC Wave 6) and decided to stop by at the local toy "mall" in my neighborhood. "Big Lou’s Toys and Collectibles." It’s a consignment store (yes, that means scalpers.) But Lou does also order certain products direct and DCUC is one line he carries.
As my wife showed off her mad Street Fighter II skills on the coin-op machine by the entrance I checked out what was in stock. Yup, DCUC Wave 6 as expected, but oh my! There’s DCUC WAVE 7!!!
Or at least part of it. No sign of Booster Gold, Blue Beetle, Aquaman or Flash, but there in front of me were Big Barda, Kid Flash and Captain Cold!
Now if Blue & Gold were there I’d have snagged em, but with them missing I went for my favorite Flash Rogue, Leonard Snart aka Captain Cold!
First things first: QC.
Again, Mattel suprises me. There’s NOTHING wrong in terms of QC with Captain Cold (add that to the fact that out of an entire set of Wave 6 minus Recovery Superman I had only ONE fused hip on Killer Moth and it looks like QC is getting better…)
And Captain Cold is a great figure! Good sculpt, especially the face, which is really helped by the molded fleshtone, so no goopy detail loss like on Adam Strange’s face. Paint apps are clean, accessory is nice though the grip on this pistol is a bit small to fit his hand….
In fact there’s only one problem.
HE’S TINY!!!!
Yes indeed. Apparently someone at Mattel thinks villains need to be small, as poor Captain Cold is exactly the same height at the much loved tiny Sinestro!!!
It’s a little better with Captain cold as his tunic makes him appear a bit taller… And he is a "normal guy." But I find it interesting that we now have 2 cases of a figure debuting a new unique body that are exactly the same size and noticeably shorter than the standard buck…
Oh, well, he didn’t break so I’m not complaining!!!
Now all I need is some more Atom Smasher parts as currently he’s the world’s most pathetic collection of parts:

I’m still on the fence with this figure but if I keep looking at these pictures I know which side I’ll fall on.
And if I ever decide to get Atom Smasher it is not going to be easy tracking down the parts as I’ll only have Kid Flash and maybe Captain Cold.
He’s a great-looking figure…usually I don’t like “extreme faces,” but for Cold somehow it works. Nice review–I’ll keep my jealousy in check.

Awesome! I can’t wait for this figure! A bit sad that they haven’t fixed the scale on some of their characters. It’s okay for a figure to be shorter but the smaller proportions are just off.
But Cold is one of my favorite DCU characters. I plan to buy 3, one for my Flash shelf, one for my DCUC shelf, and one to keep MIB.
I think he looks great; the height doesn’t look like it’ll bother me too much (less so than Sinestro, at any rate), but I’m kind of hoping they retire that smaller body, or at least restrict it to characters that are supposed to be shorter.
At any rate, looking forward to getting this fig!
Hey a bit of “shrinkage” is expect when its cold, so with him being Captain Cold, he really can’t help it!! LOL
Seriously though, that looks like a great figure, and I can’t wait for this wave.
Yeesh, I have only found Mister Miracle of Wave 6 (Hawkman, wherefore art thou?) and absolutely NO wave 5s, and now Wave 7 is starting to appear?!?

I just saw all of wave 6 today. I’ve got Hawkman, Captain Marvel, and Killer Moth. I’ll be passing on the others even though it’s incredibly hard to do so.

i think my patience can hold out on the rest of them…especially with part 1 of wave 7…part 2 with booster and beetle is another story

Ok, with all that said… Look at the pic again. Cold is positioned a little behind Hal yet from the pic he seems to almost be shoulder to shoulder to Hal so I’m wondering if it’s the positioning that makes him look a bit smaller. Include that and the fact that his parka hat is all tight to his head and maybe he isn’t as bad as it looks there. A back to back comparison is needed.
What size is Captain Cold anyway?

I could break out a ruler, and take back to back pics, but honestly, once Cold starts to hit it’ll become very obvious that he’s the same size as Sinestro, i.e. small.
My pics aren’t great, but I’ve held the figures in my hands, compared them to my DCUC collection and trust me, he IS small.
Besides, what would be the point of claiming he is small if he in fact isn’t?
So I can look like a jerk later? I do fine making myself look like a jerk in much less time consuming ways! LOL!
I was asking what size should he be? You know like how big is he in the comics? Not the actual size of the figure haha.
You know, to me the “actual” size of the character in the comics is less important than how well he displays with the rest of the DCUC.
I think Captain Cold should probably be average height, meaning if he was the same height as the standard male DCUC body then that would look right to me.
When he and Sinestro are closer in height to Robin than, say, Black Manta (even without the helmet) to me that looks a bit odd.

I love reading your reviews, Spy. Mostly because you’re always positive about the stuff you write about and you sweat out the details better than most. Cold is a great figure. That last pic with Atom Smasher’s head is too funny for words.

LOL! Yeah, I try to be as upbeat as I can. I like to point out things that I think are problematic, but I try not to just bash stuff, especially subjective things (I try to keep my criticisms to function/quality/accuracy issues and less about subjective judgments on aesthetics.)
Poor Atom Smasher! LOL! It just cracked me up that they paired the head w/ the crotch!!!
I honestly don’t get releasing this figure. It was just remade in the Alex Ross JL line very recently and its still relatively cheap on the E-Bay secondary markets. So why bother with wasting a slot in a high profile line like DCUC?
Well,
For me, I’m all DCUC. I barely buy any DCD and there’s not a single one I wouldn’t rather have a DCUC version of.
As for Cold? Each DCUC wave tries to match the “main” hero in the wave (Flash) with an arch enemy (Cold representing the Rogues), so I think he was a great choice.
Plus Barry has the bonus of the previous C&C Grodd so he’s got two great signature villains!
But hell, I LOVE the Flash Rogues and would love to see them ALL in DCUC!
