The GI Joe 2010 Convention was held May 1st and 2nd, at the Providence, RI Civic Center and Westin Hotel.  Here is one of the highlights, Cobra’s Finest.

The members of Cobra’s Finest cosplay as GI Joe characters, well the villains of GI Joe actually.  Cosplay is more than just wearing a costume.  Its a love of the genre.  A love deep enough that you are willing to spend hours, days, months, working on a costume so detailed the character springs to life.  Yes, you can buy a costume, but not these folks.  They’ve sweat and toiled over these.  And when they put them on, they take on the part of that character.  Taking on the role is the what separates cosplay from wearing a costume.

Cobra’s Finest members make their own costumes.  They help each other in the costume making.  Some of them could have a full time job making costumes they are so good.  Just look at the BAT.  Only someone with an intense love for the property could invest the time to make a robot which is basically just cannon fodder.  It also weighs a lot to carry it around.  During the question and answer session, they admitted that the costumes can be expensive to make.  And that a really good costume is usually the second or third attempt at doing a specific character.

( The BAT.  Easily, this costume was the most EXTREME! )

( They have room for evil scientists! )

( Everyone wants to be with the BAT. )

Starting with just a handful, Cobra’s Finest is now over a hundred members with branches in several regions of the United States (locations are confidential).  They were thrilled and humbled that the organizers of the convention asked them to do a panel.

Cobra’s Finest is looking for new members and they will help new folks learn how to make costumes.  They will even begrudgingly help people make GI Joe costumes.

( Scarlet and Snake Eyes infiltrate the panel. )

( The Crimson Guard rushes in! )

Just remember Zartan, Cobra Commander reigns supreme.  That is, until Serpantor arrives!
