The more I look at this line, the less sense some of the characters made make. The selection made me uneasy, so I pulled out and reviewed my Superman / Batman issues 1 thru 6. The really odd ones are Icicle and Brimstone. From the comic, Icicle is one of many Cold related villains who attack Batman. Icicle shares the one panel he appears in with Capt Cold, Mr Freeze, and Killer Frost. Brimstone’s appearance is equally minor.

The key players of the story are: Superman, Batman, Metallo, President Luthor, Luthor in Armor, and Capt Atom. Major Force is fine. Silver Banshee is reasonable. The REAL piece we need here is the Superman / Batman Robot! THAT should be the CNC.
And unless he has a larger role in the movie, Icicle should be dumped for someone with a larger role.
I guess the point is do we really need another Hawkman/Metallo/Whoever figure? Most of those characters have already received action figure treatment by Mattel or DC Direct. I’ve been hoping for a Brimstone figure since they began the Collect and Connect line. Plus, some little kid may not care about the DVD, let alone the comic book; they just might want the figs ’cause they look cool. I wish I could be that young and carefree again. Now, I’m running all over Pittsburgh from Target to Target like some kind of lunatic trying to find a crappy black-suit Joker just cause I don’t have him. So even though i completely understand the logic of what you’re saying, I also understand Mattel’s logic (for once). And yeah, a giant Superman/Batman robot would be friggin’ sweet!

as much as most fans who read the story are no doubt going wtf over some of the choices matel made for the line. though brimstone is much overdue. matel had their reasons to pick the line up. and the superman batman robot would be a nice c&c so would brimestone. as for icecicle some fans may buy him who have the other cold villians a complete set

Some of these guys may have a bigger part in the DVD than they did in the comics. Other characters parts in the story may have been switched to some of the ones we’re getting in the line. Could just be that some of these were chosen because it’s unlikely to get to them otherwise. Icicle looks weird, but Major Force and Silver Banshee don’t look so odd that they wouldn’t fit in with the normal DCUC line. I’m curious as to how this will all play out, both the DVD and the toy lines…
What I would like to know is if this is going to be wave 12 for the DCUC line or if this is going to count as a satellite wave and we still get wave 12 in early 2009. Not to go off topic but is it just me or does it seem like Mattel is lagging in announcing the next waves. It felt like every other month they were telling us about the next waves that would be coming out and now it seems like they are going longer and longer times in-between the reveals. I could be wrong but I would like to know if I am the only one that feels this way.
Right now, Mattel is saying that PE is its own line.

However, the first Walmart wave which was NOT numbered but eventually became wave 5, forcing the original wave 5 to be renumbered as wave 6.

The character list for the current wave 12 is being discussed with gusto in the AFi and Fwoosh forums.
This is a satellite wave, as you call it. There were only 5 waves planned this year from the start (7-11), which we’re still getting, so the Target wave is extra.
I’m guessing Mattel is looking to attract DC Direct consumers by offering figures DCD hasn’t to complement their collection.
Given DCD’s recent interest in offering more (albeit repainted) McGuinness-based figures, I’ll be sticking with DCD for now. But I must admit that Brimstone is pretty tempting.
When Dan reported/twittered “Icesickle” as being in the wave, I initially thought he misidentified/forgot who Killer Frost was. Joar Mahkent is a nice surprise, to say the least, and since he is now dead…well, this is his only shot at plastic immortality, innit?
My guess is with Icicle and even BL-2, they were short on choices that
a- haven’t been made yet,
b- would look good to the casual buyer,
and
c- they already decided on Banshee and everyone knows that TWO females in a wave is a BIG no-no! @_@
My only gripe with Brimstone is that he’ll be the same size as the Kilowog CnC*, when he should be MUCH bigger (same for Chemo)! But he could work with the JLU line as well, so double Bonus.
btw, is this wave exclusive or mass retail?
*(Kilowog and Brimstone look 90% identical, so it’s likely the simply retooled the ring hand and head/upper torso pieces and re-deco’ed the same parts for the rest of the bodies.)
I understand this Icicle is Cameron Mahkent, Joar’s son. Cameron sports the goatee and appeared in S/B Public Enemies comic book.
And news for the hard of hearing, Joar Mahkent is still dead. (Wow… that’s a thirty something year old SNL reference. My age is showing)
Yes. Cameron, Icicle II does appear in the comic. I admit that in the blog. What bugs me is that he only has 1 panel which is shared by others while other characters have a much larger role / more page time in the story.
My Guess is that Black Lightning was an apology to all who missed the Wal-Mart wave last year. I was hoping to see Katana with this wave though. We’ve God Metamorpho, BL, and Bats; Katana would have added to the core membership of the Outsiders. I love McGuiness style though. I wonder if DC Direct’s character selection influenced this line-up. I don’t believe any of these, save Bats and Supes were released as McGuiness style DCDs.
Yo can count me as another voter for the Batman/Superman robot C&C. You do realize though, had they done that, the boards would be full of scale complaint issues…….. Sometimes, Mattel can’t win no matter what they do since we all want something different. Fun wave though, IMO.

That’s not possible. These are toys based on comic characters. So you would have to be a comic fan before wanting them, especially since the movie is not out yet. We are equally demanding in terms of the product that is being produced for our consumption!

I do love Brimstone, and want him more than most, but I do support his choice for a better C&C for that wave. Count me in for the Supes/ Bats Robot as the CnC……Wouldn’t mind getting the Public Enemies version of Catman & Black Manta (or is it Devil Ray?) as shown in the image above……Hell, an improved CAPTAIN MARVEL (Shazam) with an Ed McGuinness head sculpt would look better than the DCUC version (sorry, 4Horsemen….)….Agreed on Lady Shiva and the Huntress, these ladies need to be on articulated & attractively sculpted figures – all of these would make my decade!!!

Personally I feel like this lineup is great, as they could have put out a set of figures in animated style of a bunch of guys we had already, so consider me pleased that they didn’t go that route. Also, I feel like a few of the choices may have been so they could integrate with DCUC better than some other characters, as the villains in this lineup all have inhuman faces, so their slightly less “real” appearance can be more easily ignored, such as “he doesn’t look human, but he’s mostly ice.” Plus, would you guys really want a animated style line of guys we already have that don’t integrate well into DCUC? I’m already going to be giving away Superman, Batman and Black Lightning as I already have their DCUC counterparts, I’m glad I don’t have to buy more retreads so I can make Brimstone.
