I just watched the trailer for Superman / Batman: Public Enemies, the next WB/DC Animated movie on the main page of this site. And I was moved to write. If you’ve been reading these for a while, you know I have very opinionated views about comics. Superman/Batman is a series that I highly recommend.

High energy heroics. Mysteries. Stories that feature Superman and Batman but at the same time give other characters across the DCU some screen time. The first arc, Public Enemies, which this movie is based on, introduces the reader to Lex Luthor, Metallo, Captain Atom, Power Girl, Katana, Major Force, Green Lantern John Stewart, Starfire, Hawkman, Captain Marvel, Nightwing, Robin, Huntress, Supergirl, Steel, Superboy, and I am sure a few others, plus when Lex Luthor puts out a bounty on Superman and Batman, a ton of villains come crawling out of the woodwork. The trailer does an awesome job of showing this by including this shot.
It just shows the depth of the characters to be featured in this story and movie. If you have not read the story, from Superman / Batman issues #1 to #6, again, I highly recommend it. It is available in a collected edition, which is probably more easily obtainable.
And to Mattel, I hope you are watching these DC animated movies unfold as well. We think you are. We know that Cartoon Network likes to run these movies. I have no doubt they will add this one to their rotation and be beaming it into thousands of homes. Free advertising for DC character products. See that Black Manta right there? Yeah. JLU. You can start working on him right now.
This movie does look amazing. I love what DC is doing with their animated films. Isn’t Devil Ray supposed to be Black Manta for JLU or is that a separate character?
Yeah, technically, according to what I have heard, yes. The folks behind Smallville attempted a young Aquaman show, “Mercy Reef”, it was going to be called, which took Aquaman and all his named related characters out of JLU control. “To Another Shore”, the Viking Prince episode was supposed to give us a classic Aquaman vs Black Manta battle.
I remember that, but I had no idea that affected JLU. There’s always room for both!
Great blog post – hopefully Mattel will realize what you’ve said and pull it all together. And Devil Ray may be the JLU version, but he’s not the real thing. They still need to make Black Manta.
I think an Aquaman themed Matty four pack would be awesome, with Aquaman (S:TAS) Black Manta, Ocean Master, and Tempest. Hopefully the four packs start doing better so something like this is possible.
If they did an Aquaman themed 4pack, I’d like to have them include Mera.
I agree with Superfriend. Aquaman would sell very well at retail and they could release him around the time of this 4-pack and probably boost those sales as well. Of course we need the 4-packs to last long enough to see Mera and the others.
I love how the movie looks. Batman in particular looks like he jumped right out of the comic.
My fav is the shot of what looks like the Superman / Batman robot. Half Superman. Half Batman. And a robot. What more could you want in a toy?
I see Cat Man in the background, I’d love to see a JLU Cat Man figure!
Nice choice of characters in both current and classic looks. Mattel should really benefit from this movie as a promotion aid for the IH and DCUC lines.
Just tried to watch the video on the main page of this website, but Warner Brothers has removed it
Check in the Mattel Forum for a topic about this. I think someone put an alternate link in there.
