Here’s a fun little project I worked on with Idolz Toys!
I’m a big fan of Tiki themed items. Heck, my 2 parrots live in a room decorated like Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room. So back when Idolz Toys debuted their new line, I was immediately intrigued.
I liked the look of the figures, and the interchangeability, so I placed an order for 3 Gruntors. Damien Noble, the President of Idolz Toyz was kind enough to send me a blank Idolz to work on, and we immediatly struck up a friendship.
Well, it took a while, but I finally finished my custom Idolz: Crux!
It’s simple idea and theme, but I think it worked out well!
And I have to say, the blank Idolz are really easy to work with. The figures are modular so arms, and legs detach easily to allow you to paint all surfaces.
As for prep, all I did was give the entire figure a coat of clear matte varnish to help the paint adhere (I’m NOT a fan of primer). Then I simple penciled in the rough design right on the plastic, and then painted it all up w/ Games Workshop Citadel Color.
As I worked on Crux, I realized that Idolz are particularly fun as they have sculpted detail as well as large flat areas that allow for graphic treatments.
I’ve gotten a bit burned out on Urban Vinyl type figures that are totally flat and rely solely on printed graphics to achieve the look of the character, so the Idolz blend of simple, clean sculpting and graphics worked out really nicely.

nice job wonder what he is pointing up at . not to mention heaven help who ever gets the receiving end of that hammer.
blah blah blah, make more MOTU weapons! LOL. This is pretty cool, It reminds me of an old African idol i made in high scroll over a decade ago. Is he hitting him self because he just got done watching a 3 Stooges marathon or something? I really like the black and white skeleton design, it’s simple but effective…I’d love to see a funny captioned pic of this next to Scareglow 😛
Reminds me of an old fertility idol my grandparents once got as a present from Hawaii. LOL! Even though I’m not into urban vinyl, I wouldn’t mind displaying that piece. It really did turn out great.
I loved the Enchanted Tiki Room as a kid and parrots as well, so I’m glad for your guys and their cool living arrangement!
Nice work (as usual). I like how you contrasted the stark black & white with the bright tongue and eyes.
