Growing up watching Superfriends, it’s easy for me to initially consider Hal Jordan as THE Green Lantern; so when Cartoon Network opted to use John Stewart in the new show, it was natural for me to have strong opinion against their choice.

But then I let myself be hypnotized by the JL/JL Unlimited series. So after 5 seasons of JLU, I think I’ve become more of John’s fan than ol’ Hal’s. (Now I know die hard Hal fans out there would disagree, but) I think GL John Stewart seems to be a more 3-dimensional character than Hal.

And since Mattel would be making Hal Jordan in 3D form come DCUC series 3, the GL John Stewart fan in me would think it’d only be fair that I make a 3D version of John (while we wait for a better 4H version of this fig down the road, of course!).

RECIPE:

Some customs one proactively makes, and some just present themselves, this one is a bit of both. I had a spare MOTU Zodak, a disassembled Black Manta (was curious if there was "proper" neck sculpt underneath the helmet) and an opportunity to see if whether MOTU parts can be mixed and matched with parts from DCUC figs.

1.) heat&pop off Black Manta’s head. Then replace the neck pin with one from your fodder bin ( I think the peg I used was from an ML fig)

2.) Slice off MOTU Zodak’s neck and drill/Dremmel a hole for in the head for the neck peg.

3.) Shave Zodak’s face armor and shape it to make John Stewart’s chin and jaw.

4.) Using a pinch of Apoxie, sculpt the hair then "texturize" it by daubing the bristles of an old tooth brush around it.

5.) Mask and Paint GL’s Uniform

6.) Paint the desired skin color for his face, neck and hands.

7.) (optional) Airbrush added tones

8.) Try sculpting the ring using Warhammer "greenstuff" without going crazy! (Sculpting them tiny details on the ring will not only test your patience; but also your sanity!)

9.) Print out GL’s Decal and decoupage it on the fig.

10.) Spray some Matte fixative and you’re done.

Great work, Grundy! Never would have guessed that as a Zodach head. Now if the Horsemen will just crank out their version of John…

I need one of these! Even at a distance that ring is great. Nice use of the Zodak head!

Amazingly cool, as is usual with your work. I can’t decide what I’m more impressed with, the George-Perez-like detail on the eyes and ring, or the seamless modding/resculpting on the head and jawline. You have that same kind of subtle elegance that guys like GrownNerd and davenavarro have.

I used to like the DCD translation of the JLU design, but now everytime I see it on my shelf, I’m gonna wish it was this one…:)
