Dark Horse Comics’ ‘Game of Thrones’ Daenerys Targaryen Figure
April 1, 2014

Winter is Coming… and so is the new season of Game of Thrones.

This week are are going to be looking at Dark Horse Comics‘ 7″ Game of Thrones figure line.   The first wave of figures was released back in January and consisted of Daenerys Targaryen and John Snow.   Today we are going to look at the “Mother of Dragons” figure.

Dark Horse was the first company out of the gate to lock down a Game of Thrones merchandise license.   In the original press release back in 2011 Dark Horse enticed fans with all of the different types of product that was available to them in this deal:

Dark Horse Deluxe is proud to announce, in partnership with HBO, a vast Game of Thrones product line debuting in the spring of 2012, leading up to the show’s second-season premiere in April. Licensed product categories derived from the series will span a large range, including statues, busts, and action figures; prop and jewelry replicas; and barware, stationery, and other collectibles. This exciting new line of products debuts with a range of branded magnets, patches, playing cards, coaster sets, and more.

Here’s Dark Horse’s description of Daenerys:

Innocent at first, she grows into a steely leader with the birth of her dragons- the first in thousands of years. Our figure is accessorized with three dragon eggs in their ornamental hinged chest.

The packaging for these figures are packaged in  a full-color window box, with a large front window displaying the figure.

The figure itself is 7.5″ and is not articulated.   It LOOKS like there is some articulation, maybe in the shoulders and the neck, but there is not.  It’s a “staction” figure.   The figure comes attached to a non-removable base.   If you are looking for an articulated action figure then Funko’s Legacy GOT figures will be more your speed.  But if you are looking for a nice line of reasonably priced 7-8″ figures in iconic scenes and poses from the series then this is the line for you.

The chest as you can see is a separate piece that is not attached to the base.   It does have a hinged lid so it can be displayed open or closed.  The 3 dragon eggs are also separate and can be placed in her hands.

The likeness in the sculpt is very nice, not perfect, but very good   You can absolutely tell that this is a figure of Emilia Clarke.  The likeness’ are even better on waves 2 and 3.  There is great detail in sculpt and paint in the hair, on the eggs, the chest and even dust on the hem of her dress.

Daenerys Targaryen is available now at: BigBadToyStore.com, EntertainmentEarth.com and on the Dark Horse website.

Tomorrow we will look at Jon Snow and then wave 2 the rest of the week.  Stay Tuned!

Daniel Pickett
Daniel “Julius Marx” Pickett has been around toys his whole life. The first line he ever collected was Mego’s World’s Greatest Super Heroes line back in the 70s. He has been surrounded by collectables ever since. In 1999 he was confounded by a lack of information and news about some of his favorite toy lines he was collecting. Since he couldn’t find the information he decided to pursue it himself thinking other people might also be interested in the same news. He started writing a weekly column on the toy industry and action figure for a toy news site and in a years time he tripled the sites daily traffic with his updates, reviews and product features. He built relationships with every major toy manufacturer and many sculptors, painters and mold makers. He grew his hobby into a world wide expertise that the industry has embraced. In 2004 he teamed up with his toy buddy Jason “ToyOtter” Geyer and they created their own website www.ActionFigureInsider.com. Daniel has been quoted in both industry and mass media press outlets. Over the years Daniel and AFi have been sought out as experts in the field. Daniel was regularly featured on “Attack of the Show” on the G4 network as the primary contributor to their “Mint On Card” segment, and our front page has been linked to from USA Today’s “Pop Candy” Blog twice. Daniel’s content has also been featured on MSNBC.com, Time.com, The Wall Street Journal, The Saturday Evening Post, CNN.com, AssociatedPress.com Wired.com, Fark.com, Boing-Boing, Gizmodo.com, Ain’t It Cool News, the Official Star Wars blog, Geekologie, G4, CNet and Toy Fare magazine, among many others. He has consulted on toy lines, books, documentaries and TV shows. But all of that really just sounds snooty and “tootin’ his own horn” – the long and short of it is that Daniel loves toys and he LOVES talking about them.
