Paramount Pictures and Qualcomm have announced that a Star Trek Into Darkness app will launch at the end of January. The app will unlock a first surprise during the Super Bowl's second quarter on February 3 via a TV spot. Here's the announcement:
Paramount Pictures, a division of Viacom Inc., and Qualcomm Incorporated, through its subsidiary Qualcomm Labs, Inc., today announced that Gimbal™ context awareness technologies will be used to deliver exclusive content and advanced real world game experiences for the “STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS” application based on the upcoming movie from J.J. Abrams.
These cutting edge technologies are being showcased in a never before-seen way and will enable users to automatically engage with a wealth of movie related materials by utilizing their real-life surroundings to auto-complete integrated missions by employing audio scan, geo-location recognition, and image recognition functionality powered by Qualcomm Vuforia. The “STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS” app will launch at the end of January. Qualcomm’s Chairman and CEO Dr. Paul E. Jacobs made the announcement today during his keynote address at the International CES show in Las Vegas.
During the second quarter of the big game, the app will allow users the ability to unlock the first of many surprises during the airing of the “STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS” tv-spot, making this one of the most unique and interactive apps ever created for a movie. As a bonus, users who register for the app will be automatically entered into a sweepstakes for the chance to win a VIP trip to the U.S. premiere. To be the first to get the app and enter the sweepstakes, visit StarTrekMovie.com/CES.
“We are excited about collaborating with Paramount on this app as it further brings to life Qualcomm’s vision of the digital sixth sense, where devices intelligently interact with the world around you,” said Dr. Jacobs. “By leveraging the Gimbal platform, this app harnesses the power of the smartphone to bridge the digital and physical world, allowing the studio to market the film in the real world and simultaneously bring users into the film’s story and world.”
Highlights of the “STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS” app include:
• An audio scan function that can be turned on to automatically recognize and reward users for watching “STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS” content on TV and other media;
• An image scan function that enables users to interact with images printed or viewable in the real world;
• A geofencing function for location-based experiences;

Set to star as Carol Marcus in this summer's Star Trek Into Darkness, Alice Eve spoke today on the red carpet for the BAFTAs and made short work of a question about Benedict Cumberbatch's mysterious John Harrison.
"He's not playing Khan," she says matter-of-factly.
The May 15 release follows in the wake of a shocking act of terror from within Starfleet and finds the crew of the Enterprise called back home to Earth. In defiance of regulations and with a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads his crew on a manhunt to capture an unstoppable force of destruction and bring those responsible to justice.
As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Peter Weller also star in the J.J. Abrams film.
Check out the full video interview with Alice Eve in the player below:
I'm not surprised by this revelation but I'm 50/50 on whether Eve should have spoiled it. On the one hand Abrams teasing Khan is definitely something that would have gotten people into seats opening weekend but if it really ISN'T Khan almost everyone would have been disappointed.
There is a third possibiliy: Eve is either lying or isn't actually aware of the so-called top secret twist. Frankly, I personally hope it ISN'T Khan because Benedict Cumberbatch looks nothing like Ricardo Montalban. There's changing things up a bit and then there's playing fast and loose with canon.

Honestly, where's, what I assume is the lost art of surprise? I really don't want to know. As long as the story is good, there's plenty of action and comradery like the first I'm good.

Star Trek Into Darkness just revealed, via Moviefone, two new character posters for the J.J. Abrams film. Check out two new designs, featuring Simon Pegg's Scotty and Anton Yelchin's Chekov (strangely dressed in red) below!
Star Trek Into Darkness opens in IMAX theaters domestically on May 15 before expanding to conventional theaters on May 17. The film also stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller.
In the wake of a shocking act of terror from within their own organization, the crew of The Enterprise is called back home to Earth.
