Columbia Pictures Announces Men in Black III in 3D

by SuperHeroHype

May 7th, 2010

Coming to theaters on May 25, 2012

Columbia Pictures announced today that Men in Black III will be released in 3D on May 25, 2012. Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are returning to produce and Barry Sonnenfeld, who directed the first two installments of the blockbuster franchise, will direct the film from a screenplay written by Etan Cohen, based on the comic book by Lowell Cunningham. Steven Spielberg is set to executive produce.

Deals are set for Will Smith, Sonnenfeld and the producing team to return to the blockbuster franchise with the intent to begin production by this fall and the studio is in advanced negotiations with Tommy Lee Jones to reprise his role as Agent Kay. Josh Brolin is also in talks to star as a young Agent Kay.

Commenting on the announcement, Jeff Blake, Chairman of Sony Pictures Worldwide Marketing and Distribution said, "Sony's summer of 2012 will get off to a red hot start with an incredible new 3D adventure for the Men in Black. We couldn't be more excited that the original filmmaking team responsible for the first two worldwide hits is reuniting for this third installment. We love where the story is taking Agents Jay and Kay and know this new chapter will deliver a fresh fun twist for fans of the franchise while also introducing the Men in Black to a whole new generation of moviegoers."

The first two "Men in Black" films, which were released in 1997 and 2002, went on to become two of the most successful films in Columbia Pictures history, taking in more than $1 billion combined worldwide. The first film in the franchise won an Academy Award® for Best Makeup and was nominated for two other Oscars®.

Emma Thompson Eyeing Men in Black III

by SuperHeroHype

Sep 30th, 2010

In talks for Oh, the head of MiB

Emma Thompson is confirmed to be in talks for a role in Men in Black III.

Thompson would play Oh, the head of MiB. It is unclear whether her character will serve as a replacement for Rip Torn's Zed, who appeared in Men in Black and Men in Black II. Recent legal issues may prevent Torn from returning to the franchise.

Thompson would be joining previously-announced cast members Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin and Jemaine Clement.

Men in Black III is expected to go into production shortly with a script from Etan Cohen and David Koepp. Barry Sonnenfeld will return to the franchise as director. The film is being planned for release on May 25th, 2012.

Alec Baldwin Joining Men in Black III?

by SuperHeroHype

Oct 14th, 2010

He would be playing the boss in a different time

Pajiba reported a rumor yesterday that Alec Baldwin, Gemma Arterton and Sharlto Copley are in negotiations to join Columbia Pictures' Men in Black III.

We've done some checking of our own and have learned that out of those three names, Baldwin looks most likely to be joining the cast that also includes Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Jemaine Clement and Emma Thompson. We're not sure about Arterton and Copley's status, but those two are definitely not yet on board.

The site said that Baldwin would play the head of MiB in 1969. Thompson is playing the boss in modern day.

Filming was recently pushed back slightly to November 18 for a May 25, 2012 release in 3D and 2D theaters.

MIB III Adds Nicole Scherzinger and Betty White

by SuperHeroHype

Oct 29th, 2010

The third Men in Black film casts a Golden Girl and a Pussycat Doll

Actress Betty White and singer Nicole Scherzinger have been confirmed to appear in Men in Black III, reports E! Online.

Betty White, best known as one of the stars of "The Golden Girls" has recently had a tremendous surge in popularity, starring in films like The Proposal and You Again. Scherzinger, meanwhile, is best known as the lead singer of The Pussycat Dolls.

E! confirmed the casting with Scherzinger herself, who told the outlet that she will play a woman named Lilly.

"She's like a small villain role," said Scherzinger, "I'm so excited because I get to die. I make an appearance. I say a couple of lines and then I die."

Though White's role is not named at this time, she will join the franchise returning stars, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, as well as newcomers Josh Brolin, Jemaine Clement, Emma Thompson and Alec Baldwin.

Men in Black III is expected to go into production shortly with a script from Etan Cohen and David Koepp. Barry Sonnenfeld will return to the franchise as director. The film is being planned for release on May 25th, 2012.

Men In Black 3 Gets a Do Over

Shooting on the movie will take a long hiatus, but why?

November 15, 2010

by Phil Pirrello

Shooting on Men in Black 3 will go on pause just in time for Christmas. But relax, you'll still get your end-credits rap song from the Fresh Prince.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the 3D sequel, starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, starts shooting this week in New York, but it will take a nearly two-month hiatus after Christmas.

The reason? Sources close to the production infer that the hiatus is to allow time for Catch Me If You Can screenwriter Jeff Nathanson to retool Etan Cohen's original script. According to The LA Times: "Nathanson will specifically work on the story's time-travel component that sees a leap back to 1969, when Josh Brolin appears as a young Agent Kay (the character made popular by Tommy Lee Jones)."

However, Walter Parkes, the film's producer claims that the hiatus is not the result of creative disagreement but rather part of a plan conceived months ago that would allow the production to begin in 2010, but allow parts of the movie, which is set in the summer, to shoot in a more temperate climate.

Whatever the reason, such a move is highly unusual for big-budget productions. It is also a costly one as the crew will continue to get paid during the break.

The delay will not impact the movie's release date, with the franchise's third installment slated to hit theatres May 2012.

New writer announced along with unconventional shooting schedule

Jeff Nathanson ( Catch Me If You Can) has come aboard Men in Black III for some rewrites, the LA Times reports.

The film, which begins shooting tomorrow in New York City, has also confirmed its unconventional shooting schedule which will shoot through Christmas before going on hiatus until February at which point production will resume.

The sequel, which is said to feature Agent Jay (Will Smith) traveling back in time and teaming with a younger Agent Kay (Tommy Lee Jones in the present day scenes and Josh Brolin in the ones set in the past), also stars Jemaine Clement, Emma Thompson, Alec Baldwin and Nicole Scherzinger.

The 3D release is planned for release on May 25, 2012.

Men in Black III Set Photos

by SuperHeroHype

Nov 18th, 2010

A first look at Will Smith, Emma Thompson and Nicole Sherzinger

Photos from the New York set of Men in Black III have appeared online courtesy of Splash News and The Daily Mail.

Among the candid shots captured are first looks at a slimed Will Smith as well as the costumes for both Emma Thompson and Nicole Scherzinger. Scherzinger previously commented about her role, saying that she plays a female villain named Lilly and only has a few moments of screentime. Thompson is said to be playing Oh, the new head of the Men in Black.

Said to feature Agent J (Smith) traveling back in time and teaming with a younger Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones in the present day scenes and Josh Brolin in the ones set in the past), Men in Black III also stars Jemaine Clement and Alec Baldwin.

Alice Eve Joins Men in Black III

Source: comingsoon.net

February 16, 2011

Alice Eve has joined Barry Sonnenfeld's Men in Black III as the younger version of Emma Thompson's character, Oh, Deadline reports.

Oh is said to be, in present day, the head of MiB and possibly the replacement for Rip Torn's Zed. In the past, she's still Olivia, a young secretary just hired by the organization. The film, which has Will Smith's Jay traveling back in time and teaming with the younger version of Tommy Lee Jone's Kay (played by Josh Brolin), also stars Jemaine Clement, Alec Baldwin and Nicole Scherzinger.

Men in Black III began filming late last year and is currently on a break from production. Featuring a script from Etan Cohen and David Koepp, the film is being planned for a 3D release on May 25th, 2012.

Men in Black 3 Calls Up Koepp

Spidey and Jurassic Park screenwriter brought in for last minute rewrites.

March 2, 2011

Sony Pictures is reportedly bringing in one of their favorite screenwriters (and one of the industry's top script doctors) to do a late-stage polish on the currently-on-hiatus Men in Black 3.

Deadline claims that the studio's hired David Koepp (Spider-Man, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) to do a few weeks worth of work on the Mib3 script while the project's shoot remains on hiatus; production is set to resume March 28.

Koepp is expected to hone the time travel sequences that are said to see Agent J (Will Smith) going back to 1969 where he meets the younger versions of Tommy Lee Jones' Agent K (to be played by Josh Brolin) and Emma Thompson's agency boss (to be played by Alice Eve).

As of now, Men in Black 3 remains slated to bow May 25, 2012.

What's Up with Men in Black III?

The latest on the on again/off again production.

March 10, 2011

What exactly is going on with Men in Black III? They were filming at the end of last year, and then they stopped. And... what? Are Agents K and J making a return or not?

The Hollywood Reporter has a piece on the convoluted production, and non-production as it were, of the Will Smith/Tommy Lee Jones starrer. Essentially, the $200 million-plus picture started shooting without a finished script last November. And while -- believe it or not -- that's not entirely unusual these days, the fact that now, some five months after production began, it still doesn't have a locked screenplay… well, that is something of a problem, it would seem.

"Sony Pictures started filming Men in Black III with only one act of the script set," explains the trade. "The studio built in a break in production that was scheduled to last from late December through mid-February, during which the remainder of the screenplay was supposed to be completed."

The hiatus was also meant to take advantage of New York tax incentives for film production. But now that break has been extended until the end of March as new scribe David Koepp has come in to work out "complex script issues involving time travel." Because the MIB movies have always been such bastions of realistic sci-fi and logic? Or is there something else going on here?

Insiders tell THR that the film might've gone into production simply because all of the main players -- Smith, Jones and director Barry Sonnenfeld -- had well-timed openings in their schedules. It has been almost a decade since the second film, after all, and who knows what kind of wait Sony would've had if they let these guys go off into the wild again.

Tropic Thunder's Etan Cohen wrote the initial script, but Smith wanted to make changes to it. And the paper also indicates that tension between Sonnenfeld and producer Walter Parkes are further complicating matters. "The real evil here is Walter trying to impose his point of view on things," says another source. "And because he's so facile and he's got great hair, he wins the day a lot. But what sounds great never materializes into a screenplay."

Yes, great hair will do a lot for you in life. But will it get Men in Black III into theaters by its planned summer, 2012 date? That might take some complex time travel to pull off at this point.
