Fox Plans Batman-Inspired Series, Gotham!

by SuperHeroHype

September 24, 2013

Gotham City is coming to the small screen! Deadline is reporting that Fox has made a series commitment to "Gotham," a new live-action show that will follow the adventures of a young Detective James Gordon. The series hails from "The Mentalist" creator Bruno Heller.

First appearing in "Detective Comics" #27 (the 1939 comic that also debuted Batman), Commissioner James Gordon is the creation of Bill Finger and Bob Kane. He was previously played on the 1960's "Batman" television show by Neil Hamilton. Gary Oldman most recently portrayed the character in Christopher Nolan's big screen trilogy.

While Gordon's adventures may make use of familiar Batman villains, the Dark Knight himself is not planned to be a part of the series.

Man, between this and the old Gotham Central book (I still miss that title), Batman's supporting cast has never shined brighter.

Anybody else think that the idea behind this series is to give the DC movie-verse an "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." series?

Except I wonder if we will get the Birds of Prey or Smallville take on the Villians-- enough that we know who they are, but not always enough to be who we want them to be (there were exceptions (like Hawkman))...

Or they decided to base the origin stories on the new 52 or Nolan versions...... jeebus no...

They should tie it in to the Snyder-verse if they're smart. That's a big "if".

No Batman? Meh.
It's like going to Orlando but not getting to visit Disneyworld.
What does WB have against live action Batman? They snuck him into Birds of Prey, for crying out loud. They can't have him be a recurring character or something?

Fox Casting a Young Bruce Wayne for Gotham Series

by SuperHeroHype

December 07, 2013

In September, news broke that Fox made a series commitment to "Gotham," a new live-action show that will follow the adventures of a young Detective James Gordon. Now, TV Show Auditions is reporting they are casting a 10-year-old Bruce Wayne for the show and it would be a regular role.

According to the site: "A 10-year-old Bruce Wayne is among the roles that are now being cast as series regulars on the upcoming Fox TV series "Gotham" which explores the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains that made Gotham City famous. Under development for over a year, the project has now been given a direct-to-series order by the network, which won an intense bidding war for the Warner Bros. Television rights to the show. Shooting on the pilot episode will get underway in March, 2014 and will center on Gotham City PD rookie homicide detective James Gordon who investigates the double murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne."

The series hails from "The Mentalist" creator Bruno Heller. First appearing in "Detective Comics" #27 (the 1939 comic that also debuted Batman), Commissioner James Gordon is the creation of Bill Finger and Bob Kane.

Can I ask why DC has been shying away from actual Batman and Superman TV shows? Smallville was set before Clark became Superman and the less said about Birds of Prey the better. Even Lois and Clark barely had Clark as Superman in it. What would be SO wrong about seeing an actual Batman or Superman live-action TV show?

Actually, I could ask the same thing of Marvel Comics and Spider-Man and X-Men but one thing at a time.

Remember, Marvel has no choice about Spidey and X-men. Other entities have the rights to them (Sony and 20th Century Fox).

But I can't understand why Batman is SO off limits. They couldn't get him for Smallville and that show had almost everybody else in in by the end. Especially since he did appear in Birds of Prey.

Twice.

A better premise for this show would be having it set during Year One of Batman or just before (have Bruce return to Gotham at the season finale, for example). If they remove all of the Bat trappings, all you end up with is a cop procedural.

And it's not like we don't have enough of those on the air already.

I'm still early into season 1 of Arrow, but I definitely see elements of that Bruce Wayne series CW was going to make way back when with the series. Like most, I don't understand why Batman is off limits for the small screen. If you can make a Green Arrow and a Smallville series without confusing the movie going audience(what are we, a society of morons?). So why not a Year 1 series? If anything it will give us something to carry us over until WB pulls their head out of their 4 points of contact and make a decent DCU movie outside of their animation department.

I think they feel like Batman is too big for TV, outside of cartoons of course.
