Warner Bros. Pictures has set a March 30, 2012 release date for Clash of the Titans 2 (AKA "Wrath of the Titans"). The other film scheduled for that date is DreamWorks Animation's The Croods, voiced by Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener and Emma Stone.
Jonathan Liebesman will direct the sequel to Clash of the Titans, which earned $493.2 million worldwide and carried a budget of about $125 million.
Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton, Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson are expected to return for the sequel that will be shot in 3D.
Liebesman directed Battle: Los Angeles, which opens in theaters on March 11.
TheWrap reports that Carlos star Edgar Ramirez is in negotiations to play Ares in Clash of the Titans 2, while The Sorcerer's Apprentice co-star Toby Kebbell has been offered the role of Agenor.
The site adds that Bill Nighy is being courted to play Hephaestus, while Captain America star Hayley Atwell is on the short list for the role of Andromeda. Other actresses being considered for the role are Georgina Haig, Janet Montgomery, Dominique McElligott and Clemence Poesy.
To be directed by Jonathan Liebesman, the Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures sequel will again star Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton, Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson. It is expected to go into production soon for a March 30, 2012 release.
Rosamund Pike appears set to play Andromeda in the sequel to Clash of the Titans (rumored to be called Wrath of the Titans), reports Deadline.
Pike, who has appeared in genre films Die Another Day and Doom, was also recently rumored to be up for a part in Superman, something that Titan's production schedule would likely make impossible.
Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles) is set to helm the sequel which will feature the return of Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton, Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson, aiming for a March 2012 release.
Warner Bros. Pictures has moved Clash of the Titans 2 up a week from March 30 to March 23, 2012. This is the same date as Lionsgate had scheduled the Gary Ross-directed The Hunger Games. Will the latter stay on the date?
To be directed by Jonathan Liebesman, Clash of the Titans 2 stars Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton, Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson, Edgar Ramirez and Rosamund Pike.
The sequel will be filmed in 3D rather than converted after-the-fact.
Director Jonathan Liebesman has come a long way from his first film Darkness Falls as he's now being put in charge of much bigger budget high-profile projects in recent years. After directing modern-day Marines fighting against aliens in the upcoming Battle: Los Angeles, Liebesman is transitioning to ancient Greek warriors fighting against Gods and mythological creatures in the sequel to Clash of the Titans, taking over the reins from director Louis Letterier who Liebesman attended NYU with many years ago and considers one of his mentors.
Earlier today, Liebesman told ComingSoon.net that the actors have already been in training for three weeks with plans to start shooting the film in ten short days in order to make its March 23, 2012 release date, while Liebesman has been traveling to the Canary Islands and all over England and Wales looking for interesting locations to shoot the movie.
"It's going to be a much more natural gritty, grounded fantasy movie," he told us earlier. "Just think 'Gladiator' with lots of creatures, I'm excited. It's a good opportunity to do something awesome with some great actors in a great genre."
Look for our full interview with Liebesman sometime before Battle: Los Angeles opens on March 11.
Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that production is underway for for Clash of the Titans 2, which will again star Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson. The full press release follows:
Principal photography has begun on Warner Bros. Pictures' and Legendary Pictures' epic action adventure sequel to "Clash of the Titans," being directed by Jonathan Liebesman ("Battle: Los Angeles"). Returning to star in the film are Sam Worthington ("Avatar") as Perseus, and Academy Award® nominees Ralph Fiennes ("The English Patient," the "Harry Potter" films) as Hades and Liam Neeson ("Schindler's List," "Unknown") as Zeus.
A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus—the demigod son of Zeus—is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius.
Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity's lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld.
Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus' godly son, Ares (Edgar Ramírez), switch loyalty and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. The Titans' strength grows stronger as Zeus' remaining godly powers are siphoned, and hell is unleashed on earth.
Enlisting the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), Poseidon's demigod son, Argenor (Toby Kebbell), and fallen god Hephaestus (Bill Nighy), Perseus bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, overthrow the Titans and save mankind.
Jonathan Liebesman directs the film from a screenplay by Dan Mazeau & David Leslie Johnson and Steven Knight, story Greg Berlanti & David Leslie Johnson & Dan Mazeau, based on the 2010 hit "Clash of the Titans" and the 1981 film of the same name, written by the late Beverley Cross.
The film is produced by Basil Iwanyk ("The Town"), who also produced the previous "Clash of the Titans," and Polly Cohen Johnsen ("Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore"). The executive producers are Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, William Fay, Callum McDougall, Kevin De La Noy and Louis Leterrier.
Joining Worthington, Fiennes and Neeson in the international cast are Danny Huston ("Robin Hood"), reprising his role as Poseidon, god of the sea; Edgar Ramírez ("The Bourne Ultimatum," TV miniseries "Carlos") as the traitorous god of war, Ares; Bill Nighy ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1") as Hephaestus, whose twisted, lame figure belies his Olympian origins; Toby Kebbell ("Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time") as Agenor, imprisoned thief and son of Poseidon who joins Perseus on his journey to Tartarus; and Rosamund Pike ("Barney's Version") as Andromeda, the princess whose life Perseus once saved, and who now, as a queen, follows Perseus into battle.
The behind-the-scenes team bringing this mythical epic to life includes director of photography Ben Davis ("The Rite," "Kick Ass"); production designer Charles Wood ("The Italian Job," "The A-Team"); Academy Award®-winning editor Martin Walsh ("Chicago," "V for Vendetta"); and costume designer Jany Temime (the "Harry Potter" films). "Clash of the Titans 2" also reunites several talents from the previous film, including Oscar®-nominated visual effects supervisor Nick Davis ("The Dark Knight,"); Oscar®-nominated prosthetics supervisor Conor O'Sullivan ("The Dark Knight," "Saving Private Ryan"); and Academy Award®-winning special effects and animatronics supervisor Neil Corbould ("Gladiator"). Also on board are Oscar®-nominated makeup designer Paul Engelen ("Frankenstein," "Robin Hood") and hair designer Kevin Alexander ("Robin Hood," "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian").
"Clash of the Titans 2" will be filming in studios outside London and will later shoot on location in Surrey, South Wales and in the Spanish Canary Islands on the island of Tenerife. The film is currently scheduled for release in March 2012.
A Warner Bros. Pictures presentation, in association with Legendary Pictures, a Thunder Road Film, "Clash of the Titans 2" is being co-produced by Furia de Titanes II, A.I.E. and COTT Productions and will be distributed in 3D and 2D worldwide by Warner Bros. Entertainment Companies.
And which character is not returning for the sequel?
March 23, 2011
The Clash of the Titans sequel has begun production this week and the plot for the film has also been revealed. Plus, one of the lead characters of the first film has been revealed to not be returning in the sequel.
The film, previously reported to be called Wrath of the Titans but simply called Clash of the Titans 2 in today's Warner Bros. press release, is being directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles). Sam Worthington of course is back as Perseus, but Gemma Arterton, who played Io in the first film, apparently will not be back. Which kind of makes sense anyway, since her character was originally meant to be killed before a new ending was tacked onto the first picture.
Liam Neeson, Danny Huston and Ralph Fiennes are all returning to the cast, while Rosamund Pike joins the group as Andromeda (replacing Alexa Davalos from the original), Edgar Ramirez plays Ares, Toby Kebbell takes on Argenor and Bill Nighy is Hephaestus.
Here's the plot description:
"A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus -- the demigod son of Zeus – is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius. Enlisting the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), Poseidon's demigod son, Argenor (Toby Kebbell), and fallen god Hephaestus (Bill Nighy), Perseus bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, overthrow the Titans and save mankind."

I like the premise of the sequel. Hopefully it's a step up. Not that I didn't enjoy the first one. I was a good popcorn flick, and had I not seen the original, I probably wouldn't have scrutinized it so heavily.
