From IGN: Tron 3 Too?Legacy might be the start of a new franchise after all.January 13, 2011 by Scott ColluraDo you want a Tron: Legacy sequel? Do you care? In what amounts to a very thin piece from Harry Knowles at AICN, the ultimate Internet fanboy says that he has received word that a third film in the Tron series is "incredibly close to" being announced. Legacy's lukewarm critical reception and not-exactly-stellar box office notwithstanding, a sequel isn't out of the question -- and, of course, was Disney's ultimate plan when they decided to revisit the 30-year-old series. Franchise, baby, franchise! Knowles points out that the film is on the verge of hitting $300 million worldwide, but really, is that enough to justify a third film? The production budget on Legacy was reportedly $170 million (and that of course doesn't include marketing and prints and all that jazz), and despite AICN's assertion to the contrary, those light cycle toys and Jeff Bridges action figures haven't exactly been flying off shelves. Maybe it's all a bid to build buzz for the Blu-ray release of Legacy and the long-MIA original film. Or maybe Knowles knows what he's talking about. Doesn't mean it's a good idea, though.

From IGN: Tron 3 Teaser Trailer?Threequel surprise said to be on Tron: Legacy Blu-ray.January 23, 2011 There have been rumblings for a few weeks now that Disney was going to be making some sort of an official announcement on Tron 3 soon, and now we may finally have it. Ain't It Cool News reports that there will be a teaser trailer (of sorts) for the threequel on the forthcoming Blu-ray release of Tron: Legacy 3D. Citing someone who worked on the shoot for the home video extra, AICN says there were at least three different scenes filmed before Thanksgiving 2010. SPOILER WARNING! While we're going to refer you back to AICN for the full details on the alleged scenes, here's the skinny on what this crew member claims is in them. The first scene involves Bruce Boxleitner (as Alan Bradley) and Dan Shor (as Ram), the second sees Quorra (Olivia Wilde) at ENCOM, while the third and most nerdgasm-inducing sees Cillian Murphy as Dillinger Jr. opposite his dad, played by the first Tron's villain, David Warner! The two apparently reveal that their schemes are under way. Meanwhile, Bleeding Cool says there is "a listing on the BBFC database for something called Disc Roars. At 2 minutes and 51 seconds it's the shortest work listed for Joseph Kosinski. The cast list given is: Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde. Disc Roars is not showing on the official list of special features for the Tron: Legacy DVD and Blu-ray. I believe it is more than likely to be the 'secret' teaser, and that Disc Roars is nothing but a smokescreen codename."

It was so MIA - I was able to sell my original DVD copy for 70.00- (which I got for free when it came out- (they did a lot of Buy Multiples get one free offers when DVDs were first released).. Now I ll rebuy (maybe) this christmas when its rereleased.. And people think JLU buyers are impatient -- I mean theres a chance those wont come out-- there was never a chance Disney wasnt going to rerelease this thing...

Disney Hires Writer for Tron: Legacy SequelSource: ComingSoonJune 7, 2011 Although there have been rumblings that Disney was prepping a follow-up to Tron: Legacy, it wasn't a sure-fire bet that we'd see a third chapter. Any speculation can be lifted, however. Disney has hired David DiGilio to pen the next entry. DiGilio's roots began with Disney; he wrote the 2006 film Eight Below. With a visual blueprint of the world of Tron already created, THR says the studio will be able to keep the production costs down. DiGilio recently sold a sci-fi pitch to Showtime entitled Last H.O.P.E. (the latter part of that moniker standing for "Hospital on Planet Earth"). He also created the 2007 series Traveler. No word yet as to when DiGilio needs to have the next Tron completed. It's also too soon to tell if Joseph Kosinski will be back to direct.

Writers Tease TRON 3 Plot Detailsby SuperHeroHypeMarch 19, 2012 It's been some time since we first heard that Walt Disney Pictures had brought aboard David DiGilio to pen a followup to 2010's TRON Legacy. Anxious fans should be able to rest a bit easier today as io9 has managed to grab an update on the project from the writers of the "Legacy," Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis. "Joe [Kosinski] is right now shooting 'Oblivion'," explains Kitsis, hinting that it's likely the Legacy director will return to the franchise, "but we've had a lot of meetings and conversations and we've seen the first draft of the 'TRON' sequel. Sometimes movies don't happen as quickly as you want... Our hope is to get something going sooner [rather than later]."What's more, both writers offered a brief tease about the potential return of Jeff Bridges' Kevin Flynn. "I would say the definition of life and death in the digital realm..." began Horowitz. "...will be explored in the sequel." finished Kitsis. Check back for updates on the still-untitled third TRON film as they become available.

The Third TRON Film Moves Forward With a New Writerby SuperHeroHypeDecember 05, 2012 Screenwriter Jesse Wigutow has signed on to rewrite the next, still-untitled TRON sequel. The Hollywood Reporter says that he'll rewrite the current draft by David DiGilio, Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz and the studio appears to have renewed interest in bringing about the sequel sooner rather than later. 2010's TRON: Legacy starred Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Bruce Boxleitner, James Frain, Beau Garrett and Michael Sheen and was, itself, a sequel to Walt Disney Pictures' 1982 sci-fi adventure. Although a specific plot has not yet been revealed, the next chapter was said earlier this year to involve an exploration of life and death in the digital realm. Legacy director Joseph Kosinski is attached to return for the new film and it could become his next project after next year's Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise. That film hits IMAX theaters on April 12, expanding to theaters everywhere on April 19.

Flynn Lives! Garrett Hedlund to Return for TRON: Legacy Sequelby SuperHeroHypeDecember 13, 2012 Following word last week that Walt Disney has brought aboard screenwriter Jesse Wigutow to rewrite their next TRON film comes confirmation, via NextMovie, that TRON: Legacy leading man Garrett Hedlund will return as well. In the 2010 film, Hedlund played Sam Flynn, the son of the original TRON's Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges). Hedlund, who soon stars as Dean Moriarty in Walter Salles' On the Road, previously reprised the role for a brief short on the TRON: Legacy DVD and Blu-ray release. Although a specific plot has not yet been revealed, the next chapter was said earlier this year to involve an exploration of life and death in the digital realm. Previously drafted by David DiGilio, Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, the third TRON adventure will again be directed by Joseph Kosinski.

I am actually looking forward to this. TRON is SUCH a fascinating concept but both movies were sadly misfires. The second movie ALMOST did it right but had a horrible ending in which they killed off two fan-favorite characters (hopefully at least one of the deaths will be retconned in the sequel).
We really deserve a good TRON movie. If the shaky but improving TRON: Uprising is any indication it CAN be done. But they have to put in the effort with the story. It can't all just be about the special effects.
Here's hoping.

Director Joseph Kosinski on TRON 3by SuperHeroHypeDecember 15, 2012 It sounds like things are coming together for the next TRON film with Garrett Hedlund this week confirming that he will be back as Sam Flynn, the son of the original TRON's Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges). We also got the announcement earlier this month that Jesse Wigutow is rewriting the script. Now director Joseph Kosinski talked to MTV about the third film in the franchise as well. "We've got an idea for the next movie that's really exciting to me," he said. "I mean, obviously, the only reason to go back would be if we could do something spectacular and really push the ideas forward that we had established in 'Legacy.' We have an idea and an approach and a way into it that I'm really excited about, and now it's about execution on the level of the script. So working hard on that in the background, and hopefully that'll all come together."Kosinski added that "It's still the same plan in that 'Tron 3' would deliver on the promises set up at the end of 'Legacy' in different ways. You look at what happened in the closing scenes of 'Legacy'; I think it sets a clear direction for what could happen in the next chapter."Kosinski's next film Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise, opens in IMAX theaters on April 12, 2013 and in conventional theaters a week later.
