Shane Carruth has joined Rian Johnson's upcoming production, Looper, the film's official site is reporting.
Carruth, who will serve in a currently-unknown capacity on the sci-fi actioner, is no stranger to fictional time travel. His 2004 independent film Primer is heralded as one of the most technically complex examples of the genre. Also a star of Primer, Carruth may be serving in either an acting capacity for Looper or as a technical consultant (or both).
Looper is set to star Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who previously appeared in Johnson's Brick), Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt and tells the story of a group of hitmen who received their assignments from the future.
UPDATE: Badass Digest has confirmed that Carruth will be providing special effects for the film's time travel scenes.
Some set photos from Rian Johnson's currently-in-production sci-fi film Looper have hit the web, courtesy of On Location Vacations, offering a look at some of the futuristic cars the characters will be driving.
The vehicles (which are branded with the Zapcars.com logo) are parked outside a nightclub called "La Belle Aurore." French for "Beautiful Sunset," the club's name is famous for being the fictional location where Rick and Ilsa met in Casablanca.
Looper stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Xu Qing, Noah Segan, Jeff Daniels and Piper Perabo and is currently filming in New Orleans.
Deals are taking place at a frenetic pace at Cannes this week, and one of the latest movies that may have been picked up for distribution is Rian (Brick) Johnson's third feature film Looper starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt and Bruce Willis, with the prolific FilmDistrict in final negotiations to distribute through Sony's Tristar label, says Deadline.
Johnson's film is about a futuristic mob contract killer, played by Gordon-Levitt, who sends his victims back 30 years in time after killing them to hide the evidence. That's all going fine until he realizes one of his victims (Willis) is actually an older version of himself. The movie also stars Piper Perabo, Paul Dano and Jeff Daniels.
If the deal goes through, this will be Sony's second purchase at Cannes this week following the Meryl Streep-Steve Carell drama Great Hope Springs, directed by David Frankel, and FilmDistrict's third deal.
You can read the rest of Mike Fleming's full analysis of the sale and the general Cannes buying market over at Deadline.
Having been picked up for distribution by FilmDistrict at last month's Cannes Film Festival, the third feature film from Rian Johnson, Looper, will be released by Sony's TriStar Pictures division on September 28, 2012, presumably to give Johnson the time needed to edit the movie which recently finished filming as well as do whatever FX need to be done. The movie stars Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon Levitt and it involves assassins who use a time travel element to send their victims back into the past.
So far, it's only one of three movies already scheduled for September next year including Resident Evil: Retribution and the animated Hotel Transylvania.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rian Johnson's time-travel thriller.
March 17, 2012
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Brick director Rian Johnson reunited for Sony's upcoming time-travel thriller Looper, also starring Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt. JGL and Johnson were on hand for Saturday's Looper panel at WonderCon.
Here's the film's official plot synopsis: "In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented – but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a 'looper' – a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) – is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good… until the day the mob decides to 'close the loop,' sending back Joe's future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination."
The film's very cool new trailer was shown, which couldn't be further from Brick if you tried. The action looks insanely cool, and JGL sports a three-hour makeup job to more closely resemble a young Bruce Willis. Was he completely convincing looking as Willis? Not entirely, but bigger suspensions of disbelief have been made by audiences so just go with it!
JGL said he focused more on Willis' later performances, particularly Sin City, than his earlier films since he is playing the man who will grow into Willis now. He said he has been a lifelong fan of Willis' and has gotten to become good friends with him as a result of working on this film.
The actor also said he believes Johnson will soon be thought of in the same company as Christopher Nolan and Steven Spielberg, two directors he's worked with in the past year.
Johnson said there are definitely some Film Noir elements to Looper with the idea of a man hunting down himself, but that time-travel is the most challenging and aggravating element to ever have to tackle for a writer.

On the heels of our Comic-Con interview earlier today with writer/director Rian Johnson, Looper has launched its official site at Loopermovie.com.
The site boasts an impressive interactive design and offers previously-released stills and trailers with the promise of more to come. There's also a number of definitions for various Looper-centric terms sprinkled throughout such as the below, which helps to explain one of the trailer's more unsual shots:
TK: Short for "telekinetic." By 2040 a very low grade telekinetic power has developed in about 15% of the general population. Far from being a superpower, it's weak and short range and mostly used for bar tricks.
At both the top and bottom of the page there's also a link to the Looper Network, which appears to be a viral tie-in that has yet to fully launch.
