Melissa Rosenberg, the screenwriter of the Twilight films, is set to work on Summit Entertainment's reboot of the Highlander franchise, Heat Vision reports.
The remake, from producer Neal H. Moritz and set to be directed by Justin Lin (Fast Five) was first announced in 2009, but details on the film's development have been relatively quite.
The original film told the story of a race of immortals and one, Connor MacLeod who, after centuries of dueling to survive against others like him, finds himself face to face with a violent killer, determined to claim the fabled prize associated with becoming the very last survivor.
The film spawned several sequels, both theatrically and made for television as well as both live-action and animated television series.
Summit Entertainment and RCR Media Group confirmed today that RCR will co-finance Summit's re-imagination of the epic adventure Highlander which is being designed for a global audience.
Highlander will be directed by Justin Lin from a screenplay written by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. Neal H. Mortiz and Peter Davis will produce the project. RCR Media Group's principles Rui Costa Reis and Eliad Josephson will serve as executive producers on the film. Summit acquired the rights to remake the classic from Davis - Panzer Productions, Inc. in May of 2008.
In Highlander, after centuries of dueling to survive against others like him, Connor MacLeod, an immortal Scottish swordsman must confront the last of his kind, a murderously brutal barbarian, who lusts for the Prize.
RCR Media Group's Chairman Rui Costa Reis said: "'Highlander' is a property that is known around the world and Summit's re-imagination is sure to appeal to both existing and new fans of the 'Highlander' lore."
RCR CEO Eliad Josephson said: "We plan on this being the first of many projects we work on with Summit."
Back in 1986, Russell Mulcahy directed Highlander, an action fantasy film starring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery about a battle between immortal warriors, which became an immediate cult hit leading to five more films, a television show, animated series and more.
Granted, the movies were never huge commercial successes, at least theatrically, as seen by Highlander: Endgame which grossed just 12.8 million total in 2000--it cost $15 million--but Summit Entertainment has been interested in reviving and rebooting the franchise, a plan that's been in the works for nearly four years.
Most recently, director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) was named to reboot the character and while speaking with Fresnadillo and actor Clive Owen for their latest film Intruders, SuperHeroHype sister site ShockTillYouDrop.com got around to asking Fresnadillo about the anticipated reboot, which is still in the cards.
"I'm so keen to make it, because I think it would be a very interesting new approach into that world, but let's see because we're in an early stage still," he told them.
When asked whether they might cast a new face for the main role or find a known actor, he responded:
"Some kind of new flavor, how about that? Especially because of the big theme of the story, which is the immortality as a curse, because I found it so interesting."

another ugh... really? Does this really need a reboot and maybe more of a touch up. Perhaps the sequels all took a bad direction for the worst but does the first movie need to be touched?
Variety is reporting that Lionsgate's Summit Entertainment is eyeing Ryan Reynolds to star in the Highlander reboot.
"Ryan Reynolds has emerged as the front-runner to topline Lionsgate-Summit's franchise reboot, and though it's unclear whether an actual offer has been made, sources tell Variety that both sides are in talks and are very interested in working together. Insiders add that Reynolds is weighing other offers and that [he] could still pursue another project," says the trade.

Ryan Reynolds has been cast as Connor MacLeod in the forthcoming reboot of the Highlander franchise.
According to The Tracking Board - who broke the story - Reynolds has been in negotiations for the last month to play the immortal, who was a sword-happy Scot in the original.
There’s no word yet as to whether Reynolds will be attempting a Celtic brogue in the reboot, though we recently caught up with director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who told us the following about his vision for the flick, including whether or not he'll be using any of Queen's iconic soundtrack.
A little over a year after he first signed on to the project, director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is leaving Summit Entertainment's upcoming reboot of the Highlander franchise. Deadline has the news, saying that while creative differences between Fresnadillo and the studio led to an amicable split, Ryan Reynolds remains attached to the project to play the leading role.
