First Look at Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss in The Hunger Games

Source: ComingSoon

May 18, 2011

The cover of the new issue of Entertainment Weekly features a first look at Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, to be directed by Gary Ross for a March 23, 2012 release.

Based on the Suzanne Collins bestseller, The Hunger Games chronicles a dystopic Capitol which requires its twelve subjugated districts to pay tribute in the form of a teenage boy and girl, forced to participate in the annual "Hunger Games," a fight-to-the-death live televised event. Katniss Everdeen's little sister is chosen in the lottery to participate and Katniss volunteers to take her place. Although persevering through hardship is commonplace for Katniss, she must start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love in order to win the games and return home.

Lenny Kravitz Cast as Cinna in The Hunger Games

Source: ComingSoon

May 23, 2011

Lionsgate and the filmmakers of The Hunger Games have announced that iconic musician and actor Lenny Kravitz (Precious) has been cast in the role of Cinna in the adaptation of Suzanne Collins' worldwide smash hit novel.

Said director Gary Ross of the casting decision, "When I saw Lenny's work in 'Precious' I was just knocked out. It was quiet and strong and understated and open hearted; all qualities which define this character. I'm really looking forward to this ride."

Cinna is Katniss Everdeen's assigned fashion stylist for the highly ceremonial lead up to The 74th Annual Hunger Games. Though he's a mild mannered first time stylist, the designs he creates, such as the "Girl On Fire" costume for the tributes' live televised debut, are show-stopping. With odds being set, wagers being placed, and wealthy benefactors able to occasionally intervene in the games, a high public profile is tantamount to a huge advantage for any contestant entering the arena. The stunning and unique designs Cinna creates for Katniss define her public identity, and in an all too real way, could also contribute to her very survival.

In The Hunger Games, every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which "Tributes" must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she's ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Lionsgate will release The Hunger Games on March 23, 2012.

Donald Sutherland Joins The Hunger Games

Source: ComingSoon

May 31, 2011

Donald Sutherland is the latest name to join director Gary Ross' adaptation of the bestselling Suzanne Collins novel, The Hunger Games and should round out the principle cast.

Targeted for a PG-13 rating, the film is based on the young adult novel and tells the tale of a dystopic future and the annual "Hunger Games," a fight to the death on live television. Sutherland will play President Snow, a part that is officially described by the studio as follows.

President Snow has been the autocratic ruler of Panem and its contained districts for some 25 years at the outset of the story. With a snake-like appearance, he is cruel and ruthless in his intimidation and control tactics.

Sutherland joins the sizable cast that includes Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Wes Bentley, Elizabeth Banks, Dayo Okeniyi, Amandla Stenberg, Jack Quaid, Leven Rambin, Willow Shields, Paula Malcomson, Ian Nelson, Kalia Prescott, Ethan Jamieson, Tara Macken, Chris Mark, Jacqueline Emerson, Ashton Moio, Kara Petersen, Sam Ly, Leigha Hancock, Samuel Tan, Mackenzie Lintz, Imanol Yepez-Frias, Annie Thurman, Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrelson, Latarsha Rose, Brooke Bundy, Lenny Kravitz, Toby Jones, Amber Chaney, Kimiko Gelman and Nelson Ascencio.

The Hunger Games Planned As Four Films

Source: ComingSoon

June 1, 2011

Gary Ross' highly-anticipated adaptation of the bestselling Suzanne Collins novel series, The Hunger Games, has gotten even more epically scaled than was originally thought. Deadline reports that Lionsgate is interested in expanding the three-book trilogy to fit four feature films.

The first film, targeted for a PG-13 rating, tells the tale of a dystopic future and the annual "Hunger Games," a fight to the death on live television. The first novel, simply called "The Hunger Games," is followed by "Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay." There is no word yet on how these titles would theoretically be applied to the film versions, but it's probably safe to assume that the subsequent book titles will be used in one form or another.

The sizable cast includes Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Wes Bentley, Elizabeth Banks, Dayo Okeniyi, Amandla Stenberg, Jack Quaid, Leven Rambin, Willow Shields, Paula Malcomson, Ian Nelson, Kalia Prescott, Ethan Jamieson, Tara Macken, Chris Mark, Jacqueline Emerson, Ashton Moio, Kara Petersen, Sam Ly, Leigha Hancock, Samuel Tan, Mackenzie Lintz, Imanol Yepez-Frias, Annie Thurman, Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrelson, Latarsha Rose, Brooke Bundy, Lenny Kravitz, Toby Jones, Amber Chaney, Kimiko Gelman, Nelson Ascencio and Donald Sutherland.

The Hunger Games is set for release on March 23, 2012.

Elfman in Talks to Score The Hunger Games

Source: ComingSoon

June 20, 2011

A site called Buzzine (via The Playlist) had a chance to attend a Q&A with musician and composer Danny Elfman about his career for a retrospective of his 25 years of collaborating with Tim Burton. When the extensive Q&A got around to Elfman's upcoming projects, he said that he was in talks to score Gary Ross' adaptation of Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games and that he would reunite with Sam Raimi to score his upcoming Oz, the Great and Powerful.

After Spider-Man 2, it didn't seem likely that Raimi and Elfman would work together again based on comments Elfman made in interviews shortly afterwards, but apparently, the long-time collaborators have worked out their issues since Elfman will be doing the score for Raimi's second non-Spider-Man movie since finishing up on that franchise. It's a little ironic being that Raimi is taking on the classic literary world of Oz in a similar way as Elfman's other regular collaborator Burton did with Alice in Wonderland, which became a worldwide box office hit.

Elfman is also scoring Tim Burton's upcoming films Frankenweenie and Dark Shadows as well as the currently-filming Men in Black 3, all of which are due out in 2012.

As Elfman told the audience:

I had planned on taking off the end of the year, writing for myself, and then taking more time next year. And as it turns out, I have five films booked, which is the most I’ve ever had in the future, which is weird. I’ve never been able to see more than two or three ahead, and I don’t like, actually, having my future all booked up. So it’s a very weird thing because it’s like, “Oh, I see. Fourteen months of my life is already totally spoken for,” and it’s scary, but it just happened. It’s a two-Tim Burton year, and a Sam Raimi, so there’s three. I’m not going to say no to Tim and Sam -- that’s already three movies. And then Men in Black, well of course I don’t want somebody else to do number 3, so there was another one. And then another one called The Hunger Games popped up, which seemed like really interesting thing. Different -- and different catches my attention in a way that’s like, “Oh, I can’t ever pass up a chance to do something different.” So that deal’s not even closed, it may not even happen, but we’re well along with that.

You can read the full Q&A with Elfman over on Buzzine.

T Bone Burnett and Danny Elfman to Score The Hunger Games

Source: ComingSoon

June 29, 2011

Lionsgate announced today that Academy Award winner and two time nominee T Bone Burnett (Crazy Heart, Cold Mountain) and four time Academy Award nominated composer Danny Elfman (Alice in Wonderland, Spider-Man) are collaborating on the music for the anticipated film adaptation of The Hunger Games, based on the first in Suzanne Collins's runaway bestselling book trilogy. The announcement was made by Lionsgate's Motion Picture Group President Joe Drake.

Elfman and Burnett will be collaborating on the film score, with Burnett also serving as the film's Executive Music Producer, producing songs for the film and soundtrack.

Said Lionsgate's Head of Film Music Tracy McKnight of the musical dream team assembled on behalf of the film, "'The Hunger Games' is such a special property – it has worldwide mass appeal, but it's also sophisticated, cerebral, soulful, and rebellious. We needed a composer who can translate these qualities musically, and we have not one but two incredible artists in an absolutely thrilling first time ever collaboration."

The Hunger Games is scheduled to hit theaters on March 23, 2012.

My kids are SO ready for this movie to be out. And I have to admit, the books weren't a bad read. Hope it lives up to their expectations!

Lionsgate Announces 24 Advance Screenings of The Hunger Games

Source: ComingSoon

February 29, 2012

Celebrating 24 days until The Hunger Games hits theaters as well as the 24 tributes that will participate in the life-or-death annual event, Lionsgate has announced 24 advance screenings that fans can win admission to through a Twitter campaign. Check out the official details below and may the odds be ever in your favor!

Fans can show their support for #HungerGames24 by visiting Screenings.TheHungerGamesMovie.com and tweeting a unique hashtag assigned to their closest city to unlock Advance Screening locations. Starting tomorrow, March 1, the top four cities with the most Twitter volume will be announced each day and fans will then be able to enter to win tickets to those locations.

In addition, Barnes & Noble is giving NOOK fans in select cities the opportunity to gain exclusive access to see The Hunger Games before its official theatrical release. On March 10, while supplies last, the first customers to purchase any of Barnes & Noble's award-winning NOOK devices (including NOOK Tablet, NOOK Color or NOOK Simple Touch) at select Barnes & Noble stores will receive two complimentary tickets to the official Advance Screening on March 21. To locate participating Barnes & Noble stores, visit www.nook.com/hungergames.

In the story, Tributes are sponsored based on their first impression at the opening ceremonies, training scores, impressions made in the interviews, performance in the arena, as well as a number of other factors. Donations from sponsors range from medicines to food to weapons and more. Because of this, Lionsgate brought on 12 DISTRICT SPONSORS to each host two of these Advance Screenings and offer 24 fans the chance to win a pair of tickets.

The digital campaign follows those for #HungerGames100, #HungerGames74, and #HungerGames50, which marked milestones in the campaign with similar interactive fan activities.

Be sure to register for a District here and learn more about how to impress your sponsors on Facebook.

Fans who don't have an advance screening near them may be able to meet and greet the cast at their local mall during the National Mall Tour beginning in March. Visit the film's Facebook events tab for more information.

From IGN:

Hunger Games Bigger Than Twilight?

Box office tracking suggests a better opening than Breaking Dawn.

March 13, 2012

Based on its tracking data, Lionsgate's adaptation of The Hunger Games is poised to score one of the top five debuts of all time at the domestic box office.

The Hollywood Reporter says that the film is predicted to open at an estimated $100 million to $120 million, and those numbers have only been growing since it first started tracking two weeks ago. For comparison, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 opened in November to $138.1 million, the fifth-best domestic debut of all time. However, box office observers believe that The Hunger Games has the potential to surpass that come March 23.

"Numbers don't get much higher than this," said a rival studio executive. "Hunger Games is tracking like a sequel, even though it isn't a sequel. It's three times higher than the first Twilight."

But how could a film like this best one of the industry's most valuable young adult fantasy franchises? Sources believe that unlike The Twilight Saga, The Hunger Games movie, which was also based on a wildly popular book series, has much more male interest given its broader action appeal. Not only that, but interest among younger women is now at 45%, as opposed to 36% for Breaking Dawn.

"These are huge, stupid numbers," said one box office observer.

It's early yet, but it's currently got a 100% at RT.

I wasn't planning to see this, but if the reviews stay positive, this'll be my second trip to the cineplex this year. :)
