Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is being directed by Jay Oliva, who storyboarded Zack Snyder's upcoming Superman movie Man of Steel, from a script by Bob Goodman. Here's how the title is described:
The Dark Knight Returns is set in a near future where Batman is retired and Gotham City has slid into a dystopian state ruled by a gang of hooligans called The Mutants. The 55-year old Bruce Wayne is forced to don the cape once more, this time partnering with a female Robin to not only stop the Joker but keep the peace when the city falls into chaos after being hit by an electromagnetic pulse.
DC's animated branch has been hard at work on several projects, the most exciting of which is an adaptation of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. You can watch the first trailer for the animated film below via MTV Geek! "Part 1" will be available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download on September 25 and is described as follows:
...it’s been a decade since Bruce Wayne hung up his cape, following most of the other superheroes who had been forced into retirement. Facing the downside of middle age, a restless Bruce Wayne pacifies his frustration with race cars and liquor – but the bat still beckons as he watches his city fall prey to gangs of barbaric criminals known as The Mutants.
The return of Harvey Dent as Two-Face finally prompts Wayne to once again don the Dark Knight’s cowl, and his dramatic capture of the villain returns him to crime-fighting – simultaneously making him the target of law enforcement and the new hope for a desolate Gotham City. Particularly inspired is a teenage girl named Carrie, who adopts the persona of Robin and ultimately saves Batman from a brutal attack by the Mutant leader. Armed with a new sidekick, and re-energized with a definitive purpose, the Dark Knight returns to protect Gotham from foes new...and old.
Peter Weller is providing the voice of Batman/Bruce Wayne and is joined by David Selby as Commissioner Gordon, Ariel Winter as Robin, Wade Williams as Two-Face and Michael McKean as Dr. Bartholomew Wolper. The film is directed by Jay Oliva, written by Bob Goodman and executive produced by Sam Register and Bruce Timm.

The art was terrible and at that point I pretended I was reading a novel with pictures. It's a good story not the Godsend people make it out to be but still good.
I couldn't possibly agree more. Between the ridiculous bat symbol on the suit, to the fact that he's supposedly retired and looks like he got a blood transfusion from Bruce Banner, it was painful. I won't even get into Superman. I'm not even very fond of certain aspects of the story. Same problems I have with Kingdom Come actually. In that I hate hate hate how Ross drew Diana and the women in general, but to a lesser degree. And the certain story aspects are there as well that I don't like.
I do like Watchmen though. So see, I'm not all bad.
