Production has officially started on director Luc Besson’s upcoming film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, which the director says will last for 115 days, and the first Cara Delevingne photo from the set has arrived via her Instagram account! Check it below along with another behind-the-scenes shot!

Delevingne leads the cast with Dane DeHaan as the two lead characters in the comic adaptation. The pair are joined by Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke, and Grammy Award winners Herbie Hancock and Rihanna.

In the story, Valerian (DeHaan) and Laureline (Delevingne) are exploring Syrte, capital planet of a system of 1,000 worlds. Their mission is to discover whether the Syrtians could present a danger to Earth. What they find is a decaying empire led by decadent aristocrats, a population ripe for revolution, and a mysterious caste of masked wise men who discreetly pull the strings from hidden fortresses. Swept up by the winds of history, the agents of Earth will have to choose a side.

Adapted for the screen and directed by Besson (Lucy, The Fifth Element), the film will be the most expensive film yet produced and distributed by his EuropaCorp banner. It is based on the French comic series “Valerian and Laureline” by Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières. Created in 1967, the comic has since sold over 10 million copies in 21 languages.

First Official Valerian Photo Features Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan

SuperHeroHype

Mar 24, 2016

Luc Besson has taken to his Facebook page to reveal the first official photo of Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan as they appear in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. You can check out their awesome costumes, along with Besson himself wearing a jacket bearing the comic characters, in the full Valerian photo below!

Delevingne and DeHaan lead the cast of the upcoming comic adaptation, which co-stars Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke, and Grammy Award winners Herbie Hancock and Rihanna.

In the film, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner- blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.

Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.

SuperHeroHype

STARZ today announced their plans for Comic-Con next month. Look for STARZ SDCC panels, autograph sessions and other festivities celebrating Ash vs. Evil Dead season two, the upcoming American Gods and the Luc Besson feature film Valerian, starring Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne.

Valerian, which also stars Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke, Rihanna and John Goodman, kicks off the STARZ SDCC schedule with a Thursday, July 21 panel that is expected to include Besson himself alongside DeHaan and Delevinge.

In the film, Valerian (DeHaan) and Laurline (Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner, blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women and her traditional values drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.

Under directive from their Commander (Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Now unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.

Look for Valerian to hit theaters exactly one year to the day after the panel, on July 21, 2017.

Next up in the STARZ SDCC schedule is a Friday American Gods panel that is expected to include stars Ricky Whittle, Ian McShane, Yetide Badaki, Pablo Schreiber and Bruce Langley as well as showrunners Michael Green and Bryan Fuller. There will also be an American Gods booth (#4029) on the convention hall floor and an autograph session following the panel.

Based on the bestseller by Neil Gaiman, American Gods posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.

The STARZ SDCC schedule then moves on to a panel celebrating season two of the hit series Ash vs. Evil Dead with stars Bruce Campbell, Lucy Lawless, Dana DeLorenzo, Ray Santiago, Lee Majors and Ted Raimi planning to join executive producers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. There’s also plans for an Ash vs. Evil Dead cabin in Petco Park and an autograph session and and a late screening.

Anyone want to lay bets on how much this will bomb? These kinds of huge budget movies not based on well-known properties never make any money. John Carter is Exhibit A and Ender's Game is Exhibit B.

Edit: The last big budget hit based on either an unknown property or an original story was Avatar. And at least that had James Cameron as a selling point. What will this movie have?
