Mandrake the Magician Gets a Rewrite

Wheeler set to spruce up Warners' magician tale.

by Max Nicholson

June 18, 2012

poofle in Boots writer Tom Wheeler has been brought aboard to rewrite Mandrake the Magician for Warner Bros. and Atlas Entertainment.

Based on the original comic by Lee Falk, the story centers on an illusionist who has the power to hypnotize his foes at a remarkable speed. Along with his strongman companion Lothar, Mandrake combats evildoers, crooks and even aliens.

Over the years, many studios and personalities had tried to conjure this feature film, but with little success. Columbia Pictures did a 12-part serial in 1939, and a TV movie was made in the 1970s. But up until now, Mandrake had been collecting dust.

In addition to Mandrake the Magician, Wheeler is currently writing Trollhunters for DreamWorks Animation and director Guillermo Del Toro.

In 2012, Warner Bros. Pictures announced plans to bring comic strip character Mandrake the Magician to the big screen, and now The Tracking Board is reporting that comedic actor Sacha Baron Cohen (The Brothers Grimsby, Borat, Alice Through the Looking Glass) is slated to play the title hero, with Get Hard writer-director Etan Cohen (no relation) set to helm the film for the studio.

Created in 1934 by Lee Falk (who would go on to create “The Phantom”), Mandrake is a specialist in hypnosis and illusion who uses his magical abilities to fight crime alongside Lothar, an African Prince and one of the strongest men in the world. Mandrake the Magician has been adapted before, originally as a theatrical serial in 1939 with Warren Hull as Mandrake and Al Kikume as Lothar.

In recent years, Mandrake has made its way around Hollywood, with stars like Jonathan Rhys Meyers mooted for the role. The new take on the material is planned as a contemporary adventure, with the most recent drafts of the script by David and Janet Peoples (12 Monkeys) and scribe Tom Wheeler (poofle In Boots). Charles Roven (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) and Andy Horowtiz will produce through Atlas Entertainment, with Alan Glazer and Rocky Shepard executive producing.

Is there any chance that this won't be a sad attempt at turning Mandrake into a comedy? I'm sure Cohen can do serious but will he?...

(and I want to know where I can see that Poofle In Boots movie...)

You know, after the disaster that was The Lone Ranger (Tonto walks around with a dead bird on his head and talks to himself? Well no, Johnny, he doesn't. He really doesn't) ...

And after The Rock's recent sad, idiotic comments about Doc Savage (“A F*CKING HILARIOUS WEIRDO!” Well no, Dwayne. He's not. He's really not) ...

I'm not holding out a lot of hope for Mandrake. I wish the big studios would just leave the classic characters alone. They clearly just don't get it.

Ah, yes. The word filter strikes again.

For God's Sake. Who did that? The Church Lady from Saturday Night Live?

Jim, can you try talking to the admins about this? It's gotten past ridiculous.
