Melissa Rosenberg to Write Marvel Studios' Jessica Jones

by SuperHeroHype

November 12, 2013

Following the news this morning of Drew Goddard boarding Marvel Studios' "Daredevil" Netflix series comes word, via Deadline, that Twilight scribe Melissa Rosenberg will be handling writing duties on "Jessica Jones". She was actually attached to an earlier iteration of the project back in 2010.

The Jones character made her first appearance in 2001's Marvel MAX title "Alias". Retroactively a former Avenger, Jones left the superhero life behind to run Alias Private Investigations. Although "Alias" ended after just 28 issues, Jones has since become a major character in the Marvel Universe.

"Jessica Jones" joins "Daredevil," "Luke Cage," and "Iron Fist" as one of four series that will build to a crossover miniseries, "The Defenders". Each is designed to take Netflix members deep into the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell's Kitchen, New York. Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, thirteen episodes series and the culminating mini-series event that re-imagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.

Rosenberg will serve as both writer and executive producer on "Jessica Jones," which is expected to be the second show to premiere, following "Daredevil".

This could be an interesting series IF they follow the original Alias format of a Mature (a la R-rated) comic. Jessica has been neutered quite a bit once she entered the mainstream Marvel Universe.

Now she's practically genetic love interest in distress. :?

One of the things I really enjoyed in the original series was when they'd use Bagley art to represent the more innocent "Jewel" persona in flashbacks only to switch back to the grim and gritty artwork for Jessica's present circumstances.

Here's hoping!

Well that seems right up the "Twilight" scribes alley..

Dont seeing this get the fanboy support-- just from the writer alone-- unless they are going to play down the Marvel ties- and market this to Tweens or Women.

Krysten Ritter Cast as Marvel’s Jessica Jones!

SuperHeroHype

Dec 04, 2014

Image

Two weeks ago we learned about the actresses testing for the role of Jessica Jones in Marvel’s upcoming Netflix series and today Deadline brings word that “Breaking Bad” and “Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23″ actress Krysten Ritter has been cast in the role! The outlet also reveals that Halo: Nightfall‘s Mike Colter is the top choice for the role of her husband, Luke Cage, who will appear in seven of the planned thirteen “Jessica Jones” episodes.

“Dexter” and Twilight scribe Melissa Rosenberg is set to executive produce the “Jessica Jones” series, which focuses on retired superhero Jessica Jones hanging up her tights and opening her own detective agency. Rosenberg is no stranger to female superhero shows either, having worked on the short-lived “Birds of Prey” series on The WB.

“Jessica Jones” is the second of five Netflix shows Marvel will roll out starting next year with “Marvel’s Daredevil.” Following the two will be both “Luke Cage” and “Iron Fist,” with all four leading into a “Defenders” mini-series.

Colter is a great pick for Luke Cage. Don't know about Ritter because I've never seen a single Jessica Jones project or comic but Colter will be great.

David Tennant Enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe as The Purple Man!

SuperHeroHype

Jan 26, 2015

Already an acting icon to genre fans for his portrayal as the tenth incarnation of “Doctor Who,” David Tennant has joined the cast of Marvel Studios’ upcoming Netflix series, “A.K.A. Jessica Jones.” Although the official press release refers to his character only as Kilgrave, comic book fans will likely better know the character as the Purple Man, a super villain gifted with the ability to force anyone to obey his commands.

“An enigmatic figure from Jessica’s past,” reads the official character description for the series, “Kilgrave’s reappearance will send shockwaves through the former super hero’s world.”

The Purple Man, whose full name is Zebediah Kilgrave (Killgrave with two L’s in the comics), made his first appearance in “Daredevil” #4 back in 1964. A Yugoslavian spy, Kilgrave was accidentally exposed to a chemical that turned his skin purple but that gave him the ability to force his will on others.

“I’m so honored and excited by the prospect of David inhabiting this multifaceted character,” says Melissa Rosenberg, Executive Producer and Showrunner. “He can deliver the most heart-wrenching moment to the driest of lines, and all points in between. He’ll make Kilgrave a truly original villain.”

“Anyone familiar with David’s work knows he brings an incredible level of dedication to any role he inhabits, a level we knew we would need from the man playing Kilgrave,” adds Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer/Marvel’s Head of Television. “While most know him for his roles as a hero, we can’t wait to unleash a whole new side of this talented actor.”

Set to star Krysten Ritter in the title role and Mike Colter as Luke Cage, “A.K.A. Jessica Jones” will premiere in 2015 with a 13-episode first season. Set after a tragic ending to her short-lived Super Hero stint, the series follows Jones as she rebuilds her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities in New York City.

Sorry Fone, but what did you expect? Flower petal man? Since pretty much her first appearance, Purple Man has been Jessica's archenemy. YES, he's a very very nasty villain. One of the nastiest in Marvel comics. But just like Bullseye & Kingpin for Daredevil and Sabretooth is for Wolverine, he's her #1.

I'm not by any means excusing what he does, I'm just saying you shouldn't be surprised. I love David Tennant, so it will be very interesting to see how this plays out.

It's also possible that the MCU version of the character won't be a snoogler (or at least won't make mention of it).

I hope that's the case.

Marvel’s AKA Jessica Jones Lands a Hellcat in Rachael Taylor

SuperHeroHype

Jan 29, 2015

Image

Transformers star Rachael Taylor is joining the cast of Netflix’s second upcoming MCU series, “Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones.” What’s more, she’ll be playing one of Marvel’s oldest female characters, Patsy Walker!

Walker made her debut way back in 1944 in the pages of “Miss America Magazine” #2 (published by what was then known as Timely Comics). Created by Ruth Atkinson, Walker would appear throughout the next two decades in a series of Marvel romance comics starring as “The Girl Who Could Be YOU!” It was in 1965 that a cameo appearance in “Fantastic Four” Annual #3 established Walker in Marvel’s 616 continuity and another decade before she was reinvented as the superhero and Avenger known as Hellcat.

For the new series, the character is being officially referred to Patricia “Trish” Walker, a syndicated radio talk show host, former model and child TV star known to her adoring fans as “Patsy” Walker. As Jessica Jones’ closest friend, Trish helps her embark on the most dangerous case of Jessica’s career.

Taylor joins Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, David Tennant as Kilgrave and Mike Colter as Luke Cage for the upcoming series, set for a 13-episode with Melissa Rosenberg (“Dexter”) serving as executive producer and showrunner.

“The character is a star and a powerhouse, and required an actress who is both,” says Rosenberg. “Rachael is all that and more!”

“Rachael’s ability to embody a character that must balance both the darker and lighter elements of our series will provide a perfect emotional anchor for Jessica Jones,” adds Jeph Loeb, also executive producer and Marvel’s Head of Television. “Rachael blew us away with her grounded, humanizing take on Trish, adding yet another layer to the complex, emotional story we’re telling with this series.”

Look for “A.K.A. Jessica Jones” to premiere on Netflix later this year.

Wow. Here I thought they were just going to co-op the Defenders name for the basically New Avengers team they're putting together. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic, but how cool would it be to see 6 or 7 instead of just 4 in the combined series? Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Hellcat and a couple more? Maybe they could add a couple more lower tier characters in as well. With the team they're setting up, Cloak and Dagger come to mind. Heck, for my money they can throw in Nighthawk and Valkyrie! :D

Carrie-Anne Moss Joins Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones

SuperHeroHype

Feb 02, 2015

Marvel Entertainment has announced this afternoon that “The Matrix” star Carrie-Anne Moss has joined the cast of “Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones” in the role of Harper, “a no-nonsense woman who could prove a powerful ally to Jessica…if Jessica doesn’t completely alienate her first.”

“Throughout her career, Carrie-Anne has embodied a wide range of characters in a compelling and relatable way and I have no doubt she will bring that talent to A.K.A. Jessica Jones,” said Rosenberg.

“Carrie-Anne has proven her ability to play complex characters with deep and layered inner lives,” said Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer/Marvel’s Head of Television. “Her interaction with Jessica Jones will be one of the many highlights of the series.”

She joins a cast that includes Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, David Tennant as Kilgrave, Rachael Taylor as Patsy Walker/Hellcat and Mike Colter as Luke Cage. Planned as a 13-episode season with Melissa Rosenberg (“Dexter”) serving as executive producer and showrunner, the series will debut later this year.

Set after a tragic ending to her short-lived Super Hero stint, the series follows Jones as she rebuilds her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities in New York City.

That's a da^# big name for an "unspecified role". My understanding is they're basing this on the original story "Alias". If that's to case I have to wonder if she's not going to be Spider-Woman. She was a big part of the original series where Jessica Jones was introduced...
