Pacific Rim Sequel Already in the Works

by SuperHeroHype

December 04, 2012

Heat Vision is reporting that Pacific Rim screenwriter Travis Beacham and director Guillermo del Toro will co-write the script for the sequel to the July 12, 2013 release.

According to the site, "[Guillermo] Del Toro will supervise the writing of the sequel script, although at this stage it's unclear whether he will direct. The filmmaker yesterday committed to helming a haunted house story, Crimson Peak, which Legendary — wanting to stay in the del Toro business — picked up from Universal. A January 2014 production start is being eyed."

Starring Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman and Charlie Day, Pacific Rim is described as follows:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

The first trailer for the film is expected to come online in eight days going by the countdown clock at the viral site PanPacificDefense.com.

Pacific Rim May Get a Sequel After All

Source: ComingSoon

July 31, 2013

Guillermo del Toro's monsters vs. robot epic Pacific Rim hasn't made any big waves domestically, having grossed just $84 million in three weekends but with a reported budget closer to $180 to 200 million due to the high cost of Industrial Light & Magic's fantastic CGI action set pieces.

Even so, the international box office for the movie is really making up the difference with China's Wednesday opening setting a record $9 million for Warner Bros., an amount that's 23% higher than any of the "Harry Potter" movies as well as making up 70% of the box office market share.

At the same time, the movie was the #1 film internationally on July 19 - 21 as it rolled into half the territories and it was released today in Spain and Japan with Brazil getting the movie on August 9.

According to Deadline, the film's international success, currently at $140 million grossed overseas in 52 territories, could help pave the way for the sequel planned by Del Toro and original screenwriter Travis Beacham. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $224 million and Legendary Pictures financier Thomas Tull could go ahead and try to milk that amount in order to create a franchise.

Charlie Day Talks What Might Have Been in Pacific Rim 2

by SuperHeroHype

August 04, 2013

The future of Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim is still uncertain. Having underperformed domestically, a sequel's chances henge upon the film's foreign box office, where it is luckily doing quite well. The latest box office numbers have Pacific Rim taking in another $53 million in foreign markets this weekend, of which $45 million is from China alone.

Del Toro and screenwriter Travis Beacham have spoken about elements that they'd like to see in the sequel previously, but now CraveOnline spoke with star Charlie Day about what he knows.

“I remember when I first met with him (Del Toro) that he liked the idea of Newt becoming a bit of a villain in the second film,” Day said. “But, I think over the course of making the film, and the way the character resonated with the audience, I don’t think he would want to turn him into a villain now, but I really have no idea....Guillermo is one of these guys that his mind is so active that he might have an idea about something and then it’s a completely different idea five minutes later.”

“I’m hopeful that we get to drive a big punching robot. I think traditionally in those comics, sometimes the science guys put together a cheap, dorky version of one of the robots so maybe we’ll get to do something like that."

The film currently sits at $293 million in worldwide box office. What would you want to see happen in a Pacific Rim Sequel? Sound off below!
