The Hobbit Threepeats Over Holiday Weekend

by SuperHeroHype

December 30, 2012

The week between Christmas and New Year's Day is always a busy time at the box office and while three new movies opened on Tuesday, Christmas Day, two of them doing well enough to best Peter Jackson's epic The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (New Line/WB) for a couple of days, by the weekend, the Tolkien adaptation had once again showed its dominion and moved back into first place with $32.9 million in 4,100 theaters. Even though it was down 11% from last week, by Friday it had crossed the $200 million domestically and has earned $222.7 million total as well as grossing over $600 million worldwide. So far, The Hobbit has made $50 million in its global IMAX run, adding another $4.3 domestically and $4.1 million internationally in IMAX theaters over the weekend.

Another global milestone was crossed by the 23rd James Bond movie, Skyfall (Sony), which crossed $1 billion worldwide over the holidays with an additional $4.6 million domestic and $10.3 million added this weekend. To date, the film's domestic total stands at $289.6 million and overseas total at $710.6 million.

Saw this yesterday. Loved it. A little bit padded but a worthy prequel to Lord of the Rings.

Worthy prequel, yes, but it was VERY padded.

They could have (and should have) done it in two parts.

Then make the third move all about the necromancer and the battle of Mirkwood.

What to Expect From The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Extended Edition

by SuperHeroHype

June 25, 2013

If Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey wasn't long enough for you, then we have some goods news. The filmmakers have revealed some of the scenes you can expect to see in the extended cut of the movie.

"You are going to get some serious Dwarvish disrespect of the elves at Rivendell," director Peter Jackson told Empire.

"You are going to get more of Hobbiton," said producer/co-writer Philippa Boyens. "We always wanted to wend our way through Hobbiton, but in the end Bilbo has to run out of the door."

"You are going to get more Goblin Town, and the Great Goblin singing his song," said Fran Walsh. "It is a great song, but it was just another delay in terms of moving the story along."

"We are putting things in the extended cut that are going to play straight into the second film," Jackson continued, "like this character Girion, who is defending [the city of] Dale using black arrows against Smaug. And the black arrows play a part in an ongoing story, for they are the one thing that can pierce the dragon's hide...There are also issues with [king of the elves] Thranduil. We get some of the reason why he and the dwarves had a falling out - to do with these white gems..."

The extended edition of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be releasd this November, just in time for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug which opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX theaters on December 13.

SYNOPSIS

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the first in Peter Jackson’s highly anticipated trilogy adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien.

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome Dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the Wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of 13 Dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild, through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins, Orcs and deadly Wargs, as well as a mysterious and sinister figure known only as the Necromancer.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the Goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of ingenuity and courage that surprise even him; he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities…A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

The screenplay for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is by Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson & Guillermo del Toro, based on the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien. Jackson also produced the film, together with Carolynne Cunningham, Zane Weiner and Fran Walsh. Finally watched this for the first time this week.. Have to say I was very disappointed.. Way too long, with pointless additions, not to mention it had no flow-- seemed like a bunch of webisodes just strung together, it also really had no tone-- there were some extremely absurd parts that just didnt fit, it was like the Lucas trap-- it like he wanted to make this serious movie- and then every couple of minutes he decided he needed some slapstick for some apparent reason.
