It appears that Rey will be the key character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens when it opens next month, but some newly revealed merchandise doesn't make it look that way.

A new Force Awakens toy set has caused controversy by excluding all female characters, including the film's protagonist Rey.

Twitter users launched the hashtag '#wheresRey' to criticise the merchandise.

This has always been a weak spot with action figures. But Star Wars always used to have plenty of Princess Leia figures so I don't get why Hasbro is having this problem now.

But Disney is all about princesses, so that shouldn't be a valid excuse.

I know one of Disney's marketing guys for Disney World. He works on Star Wars stuff for the park and they were told specifically not to include Leia with the princesses or mash-up the princesses into the Star Wars Universe.

Star Wars is "boy toy." Princesses are "girl toy." Even though companies are starting to blur that line, Disney will still be the last bastion of gender discrimination as a standard.

I got a sneak peek at some of the new Star Wars toys coming from Hasbro, and there is a big selection featuring Rey. I was told she was delayed because she will be packed with her lightsaber, which was considered by some to be a plot spoiler. But now that enough time has passed since the movie opened, the new Rey toys will be headed for the stores. We will see more when Toy Fair opens next month.

Same mistake that was made with No Face in the Dick Tracy line. Some people never learn.
