Post subject: IS IT HAMMERHEAD OR MOMAW NADON? Posted: Sun Dec 24, 2006 2:29 pm |

Having already making it known i am a fan of the vintage star wars line and the unaltered movies i am wondering how you id your figures. i know in the late 80s early 90s all these background aliens and such started getting names and back stories but is it really that important? Its kind of cool to know these back stories but in the overall if it doesnt come out of georges mouth or on screen i dont consider it in the over all star wars universe. i know some feel that the back stories are part of it and thats ok, i am not tring to start an argument. and it doesnt make the movies and less enjoyable. its just my thoughts since i was one of many of us that was there from day one.

Hammerhead was fine for the vintage days (I think most of those names came from nicknames on production notes), but "in universe" it doesn't make a lot of sense that's why everybody got an "official" name as time went on. I can't say that I'm crazy about the name "Momaw Nadon" personally, but I'm not that found of "Ponda Baba" or "Saelt-Marie", either, but they still sound better than "Walrus Man" or "Yak Face"...
If you're asking what to call vintage figures, then I'd just stick with the names on the packages (although some did change over time).

Maybe the vintage names were not considered politically correct. After all, you couldn't go around calling a whole species "yak face" even if they did have a yak face... Kinda like the caveman commercials for GEICO.... Fortunately, as an old fart, I can get away with being politically incorrect and still call him yak face. It causes the PC crowd to roll their eyes, but they never get too close for fear of my hitting them with my cane!

For me, I think it depends on which is easier to say!
I have to say, though, that the books "Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina," "Tales from Jabba's Palace," and "Tales of the Bounty Hunters" are by far my favorite expanded universe books. I loved reading about the obscure characters back stories.

Outside of the handful of novels I’m not much of an EU guy so I'm use to the childhood names of Walrus Man, Squid Head and Hammer Head.

I loved reading about the obscure characters back stories. Me too. Loved those short stories. BUT, he'll always be Hammerhead to me. And that girl I almost accidentally dated for a while will always be "Snaggletooth," although she recently got those adult orthodontic braces.

It's Hammerhead, Snaggletooth, Walrusman, Squidhead and Death Squad Commander for me, baby!
The only OT character who me and my kids call by his "new" name is Gonk.

..and it's not even "Gonk" as far as the sound he makes...it's "Gwom."
There's no hard 'k' sound at the end of the noise.
Peace,
Chip

Damn straight! Sure they're kind of goofy but Lucas currently has his kid naming characters things like "sleazebago", so I don't think it's really improved much.
