Watchmen Producer Acquires Echo

Source:superherohype.com

July 21, 2009

Watchmen producer Lloyd Levin has acquired screen rights to Echo, a comic book series by Terry Moore, reports Variety.

"Echo" tells the story of a photographer who is preoccupied with her personal problems until she gets doused by liquid metal from a military experiment gone awry. She discovers she can now harness the power of a nuclear bomb, and soon the military wants its walking weapon.

Levin also produced the "Hellboy" films, both with Larry Gordon. Levin is also a producer on the upcoming Paul Greengrass-directed Universal drama Green Zone.

Romero's Zombie Film Takes a Title

Source:ShockTillYouDrop.com

July 21, 2009

George A. Romero's latest zombie opus has been shambling about without a title for months now. Today, however, it was announced that his "untitled undead film" is now Survival of the Dead.

The film will premiere at the prestigious 2009 Toronto International Film Festival as part of the celebrated "Midnight Madness" series, spotlighting the ten best new horror movies from around the world.

Survival of the Dead follows a war-weary band of soldiers who are lured to a remote island that promises to be the last paradise on earth, only to discover that even here there is no escape from the appetites of either the living or the dead.

Says Romero, "We're in the final stages of post-production and it’s great to come up for air and find out the film's been chosen to appear at the Festival. It’s just a terrific honor."

You'll find a range of photos at the TIFF site here.

Strangers: Part 2 Ready to Roll Cameras

Source:shocktillyoudrop.com

July 21, 2009

A small update on the status of The Strangers: Part 2 (yes, that's the new title), Variety reports the sequel is set to start rolling in September. Laurent Briet is reportedly directing from a script by Bryan Bertino, who wrote and directed the first entry. Back in March (here) we were tipped off the next chapter is set in a trailer park, since then we've heard the script has been worked on quite a bit, so who knows if the setting remains the same...

Convergence Adapting Gungrave and Lone Wolf

Source:superherohype.com

July 22, 2009

Convergence Entertainment (The King of Fighters) has closed feature rights deals on a pair of franchise properties -- Gungrave and Lone Wolf.

Variety says the company is aiming to produce both projects as live-action features with budgets in the $30 million-$35 million range by tapping into financing sources from its strategic partners in Asia. Convergence's Tim Kwok will produce, with Yasuaki Nagoshi from Red Entertainment executive producing Gungrave, while Andrew Lam will associate produce on Lone Wolf.

Gungrave, created by Japanese manga author Yasuhiro Nightow, centers on a lone figure who rises in the ranks of a crime syndicate only to be murdered by his best friend and then resurrected as a harbinger of death who exacts revenge on those that wronged him.

"Lone Wolf's" based on a series of 28 game books published in the early 1980s and translated into 30 languages. The property, created by British author Joe Dever, is set in an alternate medieval world and centered on a young warrior who must battle creatures and armies of the undead while journeying through difficult terrain to defeat the dark lords that have destroyed the home he once knew.

Sam Raimi to Direct Warcraft Movie!

Source: comingsoon.net

July 22, 2009

Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. and Legendary Pictures announced today that Sam Raimi has signed on to direct the eagerly-anticipated major motion picture based on Blizzard Entertainment's award-winning Warcraft universe. Raimi has, in the course of his career, clearly demonstrated a genius for developing and adapting existing fictional universes for mainstream audiences while staying true to the spirit of the original content.

Raimi directed the "Spider-Man" trilogy, which has broken box-office records around the world and garnered five Academy Award nominations. Known for his imaginative filmmaking style, richly drawn characters and offbeat humor, Raimi wrote and directed the cult classic, The Evil Dead and produced 30 Days Of Night. He most recently wrote and directed the supernatural thriller, Drag Me To Hell.

"At its core, 'Warcraft' is a fantastic, action-packed story," said Raimi. "I am thrilled to work with such a dynamite production team to bring this project to the big screen."

Charles Roven's producing talents were recently seen with last summer’s blockbuster The Dark Knight, which grossed in excess of $1 billion, was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won two. His body of work also includes the widely acclaimed Batman Begins and the sci-fi classic 12 Monkeys. Roven, with Atlas producing partner Alex Gartner, will be producing with Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull, Legendary's Chief Creative Officer Jon Jashni, Raimi and Raimi's producing partner Joshua Donen. Raimi's partner, Robert Tapert, will be an Executive Producer and Blizzard Entertainment's Senior Vice President of Creative Development, Chris Metzen, a Co-Producer.

"Partnering with Sam Raimi exemplifies Legendary's mandate of marrying the highest quality intellectual property to world-class filmmakers" said Legendary's Tull. "Sam's passion for 'Warcraft' is undeniable and we know that he will create an incredible film worthy of Blizzard's phenomenal franchise. We look forward to collaborating with our partners at Warner Bros. and continuing our successful relationship with Chuck in bringing this rich new world to the screen."

"Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures have a shared vision for this film and we searched at length to find the very best director to bring that vision to life," said Paul Sams, chief operating officer of Blizzard Entertainment. "From our first conversation with Sam, we could tell he was the perfect choice. Sam knows how to simultaneously satisfy the enthusiasts and the mainstream audience that might be experiencing that content for the first time. We're looking forward to working with him to achieve that here."

"Blizzard Entertainment's 'Warcraft' has become a second home for millions of players and Sam's experience and talent make him the perfect director for this remarkable and action-packed world," said Atlas' Roven. "Alex and I are proud to be working with Sam and re-teaming with our friends at Legendary and Warner Bros."

The film will fall under Legendary Pictures' co-production and co-financing deal with Warner Bros. "'Warcraft' is emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which our studio is best known. We have enjoyed great success with our partners at Legendary, and this is an incredible opportunity for us to work with Sam on a project that is so eagerly anticipated by so many," said Jeff Robinov, President, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.

Blizzard Entertainment's "Warcraft" universe is a rich fantasy setting that revolves around the epic conflict between the opposing forces of the Horde and the Alliance. Since its debut in 1994, "Warcraft" has developed a loyal following across the globe, with several bestselling, award-winning PC games and a range of popular licensed products including novels, action figures, apparel, comic books, board games, and more. "World of Warcraft," Blizzard Entertainment's subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in the Warcraft universe, is the most popular game of its kind in the world. Its most recent expansion, "Wrath of the Lich King," is the fastest-selling PC game of all time, with more than 2.8 million copies sold in its first 24 hours of availability and more than 4 million in its first month.

Further details about the upcoming Warcraft movie, including cast and targeted release date, will be revealed as development progresses.

Darren Lynn Bousman to Helm Abattoir

Source: comingsoon.net

July 22, 2009

Darren Lynn Bousman ("Saw" films) will write and direct Abattoir for Radical Pictures, reports Variety.

The trade says Radical's publishing arm is in the process of turning the property into a graphic novel, based on the concept by Bousman and writing-producing partner Michael Peterson. Artwork for the graphic novel will be unveiled at Comic-Con.

In Abattoir (the French word for slaughterhouse), a real estate agent assigned to clean up the remnants of a massacre that took place in a mansion he hopes to sell is visited by a twisted old man who draws the agent into a web of shadows, murders and massacres.

Three-Part Bruce Lee Biopic in the Works

Source: comingsoon.net

July 22, 2009

Variety says that a three-part biopic about martial arts king Bruce Lee is being made in cooperation with the family of Hong Kong's most famous native son, who died 36 years ago this week.

The family is working with China's J.A. Media on Bruce Lee, which will start shooting in October with Tony Leung Ka-fai as Lee's father. Additional cast and director have not yet been set.

However, filmmaker Zhang Yimou has said many times that he is keen to shoot a film of Lee's life.

The first part is scheduled for release on Nov. 27, 2010, the 70th anniversary of Lee's birth.

G.I. Joe 2 Planned

Stars locked for sequel, filming to begin next summer?

by Orlando Parfitt, IGN UK

UK, July 22, 2009 - Despite some ugly pre-release rumours (that appear to be unfounded), it seems that the team behind the forthcoming G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra have enough confidence in the project to already begin talking about a sequel.

Speaking at a press conference in Australia (and reported by CineFools), the director and cast were asked if they were locked in for a sequel. Director Stephen Sommers responded "Yes they are!", with the whole cast apparently nodding their heads, and then the director shouted "next summer!". We assume this means they would begin filming next summer if the first G.I. Joe is a success.

No more details are reported, but it seems the team are in good spirits ahead of the movie's release next month.
