In the beginning the Otter created AFI.

And the internet was without form; and was void. And darkness was on the face of the forums. And the spirit of AFI moved upon Superfly and Vader.

And then the Otter said "Let there be the countdown to SDCC." And there was the countdown to SDCC.

And Julius Marx saw the countdown to SDCC. And it was good.

Columbia Wants Reitman Off Ghostbusters 3?

Source: comingsoon.net

March 18, 2010

Vulture is reporting that Sony's Columbia Pictures is looking to make Ghostbusters 3 without the first two films' writer-producer, Ivan Reitman. The site says:

The studio's strategy is to revitalize the franchise for next year by having the original 'busters train a dramatically younger crew in Ghostbusters III, while a correspondingly younger director handles things behind the camera. However, Reitman's old contract — made at the height of his and Ovitz's powers — still gives him exceptional creative control over the series, including director approval.

The site adds that, along with Reitman, original stars Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Harold Ramis have deals in which they can single-handedly veto and kill the project if they don't like something. The studio would like to have the actors on board, however.

A second draft of the script by "The Office" writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky will be turned in in May.

According to Vulture, Columbia had hoped that Reitman's new project would conflict with Ghostbusters 3, but Reitman thinks he can do both. He'll next direct the comedy Friends with Benefits, starring Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman. It's a sex comedy wherein two friends in a purely physical relationship begin to develop true romantic feelings for one another. That movie is scheduled to hit theaters on January 7, 2011.

Would Sony still go ahead with Reitman to get a tentpole into theaters in 2011? We should soon find out.

Hank Azaria is Gargamel in The Smurfs

Source: comingsoon.net

March 17, 2010

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Hank Azaria ("The Simpsons") will voice evil sorcerer Gargamel in Sony's The Smurfs.

The magazine also says that Jayma Mays ("Glee") will play the pregnant wife to Neil Patrick Harris' character. The film centers on the happy expectant couple's lives being turned upside-down upon meeting these blue creatures. The movie will take place in New York City's Central Park and is set to begin production next month.

Jonathan Winters, who voiced multiple characters on the long-running Hanna-Barbera cartoon version of "Smurfs," will play Papa Smurf. Katy Perry will portray Smurfette, Alan Cumming is taking on Gutsy Smurf and George Lopez is onboard as Grouchy Smurf.

The studio is targeting a August 3, 2011 release.

And, as I'm sure most of you are aware, the 2010 SDCC is almost sold out already.

Singer and Shuler Donner on X-Men: First Class and X-Men 4

Source:comingsoon.net

March 18, 2010

In an interview with Bryan Singer and producer Lauren Shuler Donner at the Los Angeles Times about the first two X-Men movies, the discussion veered to Singer directing X-Men: First Class and possibly even X-Men 4.

Talking about why he thinks the "X-Men" movies are suited for him, Singer said:

"I genuinely like the people, and my personality meshes more with this universe than it does with other universes, I think; I see that now at this point... I feel a connection to the X-Men characters and also the ensemble nature of the films. If you look at 'Usual Suspects'' or my last film, 'Valkyrie,' I feel especially comfortable with ensemble juggling. In the space between all the characters you can disguise a central thought that's hidden in all the discourse. I missed that with the singular relationship story of Superman. And, well, it always gives you something to cut to..."

According to the article, Singer says X-Men: First Class will find its axis in the relationship between Professor X and Magneto and the point where their friendship soured. It will also detail the beginning of the school for mutants and have younger incarnations of some characters with new actors (He shrugged when asked if Hugh Jackman might appear as Wolverine).

"Just doing younger mutants is not enough. The story needs to be more than that. I love the relationship between Magneto and Xavier, these two men who have diametrically opposite points of view but still manage to be friends -- to a point. They are the ultimate frenemies."

Shuler Donner also has pitched Singer on doing a fourth installment of the previously established "X-Men" franchise and Jackman had lunch with Singer to coax him into a project as well, which may or may not be Wolverine 2. Jackman has said the sequel will be set in Japan and released in 2011.

In the interview, Singer turned to Shuler Donner and said of X-Men 4: "Hold that one off for just a little, I'm fixated on the other one right now." She nodded and answered, "I will, I will ... I'm holding it open with high hopes. It's totally different [from 'First Class'] and it will be so interesting for you."

Tim Burton Welcomes Addams Family in 3D

Source: comingsoon.net

March 18, 2010

Tim Burton is going to keep his love for stop-motion animation going and going...

Coming off the success of Alice in Wonderland for Disney, he's aligning himself with Universal's Illumination Entertainment and producer Chris Meledandri to resurrect The Addams Family.

The goal is to create a stop-motion animated film in 3D, similar to what Burton is doing with Frankenweenie right now. A writer for The Addams Family is currently being sought (the rights were recently purchased so the deal is still fresh) and, according to Deadline, it will hold no relation to the television series or the two feature films starring Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston.

Burton will provide the visual palette for the picture which will invoke creator Charles Addams' original drawings. The director is also developing Dark Shadows with Johnny Depp.

That's who.

Josh Duhamel Back for Transformers 3

Source: SuperHeroHype

March 18, 2010

While it was expected, it was not confirmed yet whether Josh Duhamel would return as Major Lennox in Transformers 3.

Duhamel told us today at the Las Vegas ShoWest convention that he met with director Michael Bay yesterday, that the script is done and they're preparing to start filming in the summer. So yes, he will indeed be back alongside Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox and Tyrese Gibson.

Transformers 3 is scheduled to hit theaters on July 1, 2011.

From IGN:

Captains and Kings

Another Gossip Girl actor reportedly up for Captain America.

by Jim Vejvoda

March 18, 2010 - Marvel Entertainment has long said that whichever actor who ended up playing the title role in Captain America would be American. But with their casting search turning into a daily who's who of rumored contenders, it appears that they may now be softening their position.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Romanian-born actor Sebastian Stan (Gossip Girl, Kings, The Covenant) is among the pool of finalists for the role of Cap, along with previously reported candidates Channing Tatum, Chris Evans, Ryan Phillippe, Mike Vogel, and Wilson Bethel. (Stan's Gossip Girl co-star Chace Crawford had also been in the running at one point.)

EW originally reported that Tron: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund was also among these finalists -- not only that, but he was also Marvel's first choice for the role -- but have now updated their story to say Hedlund is no longer under consideration.

Marvel is expected to make a decision shortly which, of course, is what we've been hearing for well over a month now.

New Trailer for Kick-Ass

Source:superherohype.com

March 18, 2010

Lionsgate has revealed a new trailer for director Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass, coming to theaters on April 16. The comic book adaptation stars Nicolas Cage, Aaron Johnson, Lyndsy Fonseca, Mark Strong, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Chloe Moretz.

Kick-Ass tells the story of average teenager Dave Lizewski (Johnson), a comic-book fanboy who decides to take his obsession as inspiration to become a real-life superhero. As any good superhero would, he chooses a new name -- Kick-Ass -- assembles a suit and mask to wear, and gets to work fighting crime. There's only one problem standing in his way: Kick-Ass has absolutely no superpowers.

His life is forever changed as he inspires a subculture of copy cats, is hunted by assorted violent and unpleasant characters, and meets up with a pair of crazed vigilantes, including an 11-year-old sword-wielding dynamo, Hit Girl (Moretz) and her father, Big Daddy (Cage).

You can watch the trailer (labeled 'Trailer 4') by going here!

Platinum Dunes Behind Monster Squad Remake

Source: comingsoon.net

March 19, 2010

Deadline New York is reporting that Platinum Dunes, which produced The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street remakes, have come on board the remake of The Monster Squad.

It's been over a year since Rob Cohen revealed that he was actively working with Paramount Pictures to remake The Monster Squad. Cohen was a producer on the original directed by Fred Dekker.

A writer is now being sought for the new version.

The Monster Squad, written by Shane Black and Dekker, was released in '87 and told of a monster-lovin' group of kids who side with the Frankenstein monster and must do battle with Dracula, the Wolfman, the Mummy and the Gill-Man.

ShoWest 2010: A Fifth Final Destination is Coming

Source: ComingSoon.net

March 19, 2010

The Final Destination is not the final chapter in the series.

Today, at ShoWest in Las Vegas, ComingSoon.net sat in on Warner Bros.' The Big Picture presentation during which the studio's Alan Horn confirmed a fifth "Final Destination" film is in the works.

Each film in the series continues to be a financial success for the company. The Final Destination, which hit theaters last year in 3D, grossed $66 million domestically but made $180 million worldwide.

The last entry's title sounded so definitive so we're curious to hear what they'll call the next film.
