SDCC: Sam Raimi to Direct Earp: Saints for Sinners

by SuperHeroHype

Jul 20th, 2010

Will adapt the graphic novel from Radical Publishing

Sam Raimi has signed on for Earp: Saints and Sinners, a futuristic retelling of the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral, reports Heat Vision. The film will be based on the recently released graphic novel by Radical Publishing and is being developed at DreamWorks with Matt Cirulnick, one of the original creators of the property, working on the first draft.

The graphic novel is described as follows:

From Matt Cirulnick and David Manpearl comes a modern-day reimagining of the classic western hero, Wyatt Earp, in a special $1.00 issue #0 preview of the upcoming, 3-issue miniseries.

In a world where the American economy has all but collapsed to the levels of the Great Depression, infamous bandits roam the country and the law is as corrupt as the criminals its sworn to stop. Yet one lawman remains a steadfast moral compass for the people: WYATT EARP. Earp has collared more most-wanted men than anyone in history – but after a violent assignment claims the life of his brother, Wyatt sets out to forge a simple life in the only boomtown left: Las Vegas. With gorgeous women and free-flowing money on endless tap, Sin City attracts more people than a modern gold rush. Though Earp no longer wears a U.S. Marshall’s badge, his past is about to catch up to him. With nearly everything to lose, Earp will have to beat the odds stacked against him in order to bring old-fashioned justice to Sin City.

Radical president Barry Levine and Josh Donen, Raimi's partner at Star Road Entertainment, are producing. Manpearl, Cirulnick and Radical's Jesse Berger are executive producing, and DreamWorks' Mark Sourian and Jonathan Elrich will oversee.

MONSTERVERSE ENTERTAINMENT reveals the JOHN CASSADAY variant cover for its upcoming BELA LUGOSI'S TALES FROM THE GRAVE horror anthology comic book series. One copy of the special Cassaday cover edition will be included with every five copies ordered by retailers. The standard cover features a striking portrait of Bela Lugosi by legendary monster painter Basil Gogos.

John Cassaday is one of the most popular comic book artists in the world and was the illustrator of DC Comics' acclaimed PLANETARY series and Marvel Comics' hugely successful ASTONISHING X-MEN for which he received the Eisner Award for best penciler. He has recently brought his story-telling talents to the film medium, having directed an episode of the noted science fiction/action series, DOLLHOUSE. Joss Whedon (Cassaday's X-MEN collaborator) created DOLLHOUSE along with BUFFY, THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and FIREFLY and is both writing and directing THE AVENGERS for Marvel Studios and Disney.

BELA LUGOSI'S TALES FROM THE GRAVE will be in comic shops during the coming Halloween season. The comic will be a double-sized 48-page color quarterly for $4.99. The first issue contains stories and art by such notables as Kerry Gammill, (SPIDER-MAN and SUPERMAN) James Farr (whose XOMBIE online animated and comic book series is being brought to theater screens by Dreamworks in a live-action production by top writer/producers Orchi and Kurtzman), Chris Moreno (WORLD WAR HULK), John Cassaday, Rob Brown (named last year's horror artist of the year in an online vote), Derek McCaw, Rafael Navarro (creator of the Xeric Award winning series SONAMBULO), Martin Powell and Eisner Award- winning artist Terry Beatty (THE BATMAN STRIKES), Brian Denham (IRON MAN, ANGEL) and Bruce Timm (designer for Warner Bros animated BATMAN series) and more. The book also features an article by leading Lugosi researcher and author Gary D. Rhodes.

Upcoming issues will feature work by top names in movies and comic books. Directors John Landis and Joe Dante, make-up genius Rick Baker and others are bringing their talent for horror from movies to the illustrated page for the first time. Other contributors will include Steve Niles, Benton Jew, Neil Vokes, Jack Herman, Mike Hoffman, Brian Denham, Hank Mayo, James Groman, and Joe and John Lansdale.

The Diamond Item # Code is: AUG101080 with the title, BELA LUGOSI'S TALES FROM THE GRAVE. This information is for fans to inform their comic book shops exactly what to order.

The MONSTERVERSE editorial staff will be in attendance at the international SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON 2010. Publisher/editor Kerry Gammill will be signing at the Vanguard Productions Booth 1709 at times to be announced. You can receive TWITTER updates at Comic-Con from MONSTERVERSE at: http://www.twitter.com/monsterverse for the latest convention news and information. Did Year One Hurt Ghostbusters 3's Momentum?

Source: shocktillyoudrop.com

July 19, 2010

More on Ghostbusters 3, the sequel that certainly appears to be having a tough time in development at Sony (where Men in Black III is quickly on the move, go figure).

Bill Murray candidly spoke to GQ about the sequel. Here's what he had to say on the latest:

It's all a bunch of crock. It's a crock. There was a story — and I gotta be careful here, I don't want to hurt someone's feelings. When I hurt someone's feelings, I really want to hurt them. [laughs] Harold Ramis said, Oh, I've got these guys, they write on The Office, and they're really funny. They're going to write the next Ghostbusters. And they had just written this movie that he had directed." He's talking about Year One starring Jack Black and Michael Cerra. "Year One. Well, I never went to see Year One, but people who did, including other Ghostbusters, said it was one of the worst things they had ever seen in their lives. So that dream just vaporized. That was gone. But it's the studio that really wants this thing. It's a franchise. It's a franchise, and they made a whole lot of money on Ghostbusters."

Seriously, who knows if this will ever happen? Read more via this link!

Those eager to see the upcoming movie Buried can be "trapped" in a coffin-like space at the San Diego Comic-Con's booth #3729 with the video being posted in a virtual cemetery presumably at the official site, where you can now check out a Comic-Con teaser.

Opening in theaters on September 24, the Rodrigo Cortes-directed film stars Ryan Reynolds and Jose Maria Yazpik.

SDCC '10: Watch Some Footage from The Goon!

Source: shocktillyoudrop.com

July 19, 2010

Again, I have to question: Will there be any surprises in store for those attending the San Diego Comic-Con? MTV has debuted a first look at The Goon animated film in action. No more teasers. No more art. Straight-up footage. David Fincher is attached to produce. Hopefully we'll hear more about its development this week!

BOOM! Promotes Waid to Chief Creative Officer, Gagnon to EIC

By Press Release

BOOM! STUDIOS' MARK WAID PROMOTED TO CHIEF CREATIVE OFFICER

MATT GAGNON NAMED EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

July 19th, 2010 – Los Angeles, CA – BOOM! Studios, 2009's "Best Publisher" and the recipient of 7 Eisner and 5 Harvey Award nominations announced today that Mark Waid has been promoted to Chief Creative Officer.

Matt Gagnon has received a promotion to Editor-in-Chief.

For the past three years, Mark Waid has been serving as Editor-in-Chief of BOOM! Studios and has been one of the leading factors in the amazing growth that's seen the company increase its market share tenfold. Managing Editor Matt Gagnon has, likewise since his hiring in 2008, been a critical player in the company's explosive expansion.

"Mark Waid is one of the most well-loved and dynamic personalities in comics," said Ross Richie, Chief Executive Officer of BOOM!. "When he assumed the editorial reigns at BOOM! in 2007, he had his work cut out for him – I had not run the trains on time, and much of the editorial schedule was wrecked. Mark used his 25 years of experience in the business to methodically put our core titles like ZOMBIE TALES and CTHULHU TALES back on track, added fresh comics creators with fresh voices to our line, and righted our business and helped define our brand. Without that intervention, there's no way we could have achieved the meteoric growth we've enjoyed. He's been a world-class talent, and it's a pleasure to commemorate that with this promotion."

Waid added, "Ross is too kind and perhaps drinks a little much. Let’s save the accolades for Matt Gagnon. He’s got an uncanny eye for talent and a gift for finding diamonds in the dark, secret mineshafts in which freelancers dwell. He’s unearthed breathtaking talents, among them HEXED’s Emma Rios, THE UNKNOWN ’s Minck Oosterveer, and IRREDEEMABLE’s Peter Krause. Moreover, Matt has worked hands-on to make sure that BOOM!’s books are there for readers every month, on time, and that they’re great reads. I am extremely proud of his accomplishments, and we’re overdue in acknowledging them as I shift my responsibilities within the company to focus on our expanding opportunities both inside and outside publishing. Between the upcoming line of comics and graphic novels we’re doing with Stan Lee and POW! Entertainment, our increasing digital-media strategies, and our continued growth in Hollywood, my energies are more dedicated to BOOM! than ever before.”

Waid has been, for over twenty years, one of America’s best-selling comic book authors, having contributed to every major publisher and having written a wider range of well-known comic characters than any comics writer in history, including Spider-Man, The X-Men, Batman, Superman, Archie, and Captain America. The series Waid launched at BOOM! last year, IRREDEEMABLE, was nominated for "Best New Series," "Best Writer," and "Best Cover Artist" in the 2010 Eisner Awards and "Best Writer" and "Best New Series" by the 2010 Harvey Awards. This success has been followed up with the critically acclaimed sister title, INCORRUPTIBLE.

Gagnon came to BOOM! from Meltdown Comics in Los Angeles, one of the most influential comic book retail stores in the country. Meltdown is renowned for a cutting-edge approach to retailing and a sophisticated and varied line of products, a philosophy that Gagnon had a hand in shaping at the super-store. He brings that same approach to BOOM!, breaking new ground with a strong editorial voice.
