Just finished with the listening.
I have to say, I, too, have friends with little to no "social collateral" (I forget the exact term but it is brilliant).
I can sort of forgive someone half my age not understanding the appeal of star wars or getting the reference to some obscure 80's film, but when they are my age (+/- 5 years) and they look at me blankly when I the conversation turns to childhood toys, cartoons, movies, or music I just have to wonder what they grew up with.
Glad to know I'm not the only one.
... and on the subject of friends from Hawaii, I had a college friend who brought his Hawaiian roommate over for Thanksgiving dinner, everyone milling about, eating, drinking, making merry and all, when he very quitely and not quite to himself declares, "oh my god. That's a fireplace. I've read about those".
After the room completely shut down when the pin dropped you would've been deafened by the uproar of laughter that followed.
