I think they may be saying dramatically now, so when the price is actually revealed, it's not so bad.
For example. See JLU. When they said the final packs would have to be released at a price point of $50 per pack. Everyone freaked. Then when the $30 price point was revealed, it was taken as good news.
I will wait. MOTU to me, is worth slightly more than what I'm paying. I think you get a lot for your dollars. BUT, and it's a big BUT! I want to see a good character selection. I'm talking Ram Man. Glimmer. Etc. Not all the heavy hitters, but I do want a few of them.

That was a very good post by TG. It helped assuage some of the concerns I had. I'm just wondering though, if a line is so healthy that you could lose 50% of the subs and still have enough to stay going, then why would you need to raise prices? That's really a rhetorical question as I (and most others should as well) already know the answer.

Im sure Mattel has a base % profit items/lines need to make, they could be selling 1000s of figures, but if they are only making 5% profit, they are not really making money regardless of how many they sell. Now I am just making up numbers, but thats my guess

batfink wrote: I think Mattel was referring to MOTU when he said they could lose half the subs. He said DCU has sold the "bare minimum" to keep the sub going. And as everyone knows, dramatically jacking up the price on something is always a great way to generate more sales! Dramatic price increases worked really well for YJ and DCUC at retail, so this should go well on Mattycollector. Maybe the DCU sub is just more hassle than its worth to Mattel and they just need an out. It's kind of funny, actually. They talked about learning the lessons from past DCU sales and I think they did learn something: If sales are just "good" on a toy line, double the price and see what happens. Either you'll double the profits or tank the line to make room for the next hot property. Despite all this, I'm still all good with Mattel. Toyguru and Mattel saved the unreleased JLU so I'll still owe them big time. I'll shrug this one off and just buy all of the Batman stuff, and see what they have in store for 2013. Umm, this is about MOTUC. Not DCUC.

BINGO.
The vehicle did not sell well enough to continue. The figures are still chugging along.

Point being that he is the one who sets the tone with his communications. Wind Raider sold-out in days instead of hours and that was the feedback the customers got. And you can't blame the Fans for simply reacting to the information they are given. But then again, what do I know. I'm sure that, in other industries, the news of "dramatically raising prices" is often followed by huge cheers and copious clapping from customers. "Great News Grandma!!! Your medicine is going to cost more!!! Isn't that great? BEST NEWS EVER!!!"
