Maybe its just me, but I feel like Im being threatened here.
Buy a sub, or you wont get a figure. If enough people dont buy the sub, we will can it.
well then, good. Can it.
There are enough things going on in the world to collect, that I shouldnt have to beg companies to take my money.

It's all well and good but until they chuck Digital River... I won't touch anything from the Matty site.

Quote: In 2013 we are going to be switching much more to a subscription only model. Some figures will still have EXTREMELY limited “day-of” stock (meaning our regular sales to the general public on the 15th of each month), but many figures for all the clubs will have none at all. wow...I wonder just how many the "many figures" part is... Quote: We have had a few changes from past years, the most noticeable is a price increase on basic figures (i.e., MOTUC going from $20 to $25). To quell any rumors, I can confirm we are not overloading our pockets here. This price increase is 100% due to the skyrocketing cost of producing these figures over the last few years. Sorry, but I call BS on this - a full 25% price increase is only "covering costs"? Right.

Yeah pretty much they will dangle a carrot, like the upcoming Dark Knight figure, and say, "See!! Don't you want this?? Better order a sub! Who cares if you don't like the sub...you'll never get him if you don't subscribe!!"
For me, it doesn't really matter once JLU is over. I just think there is a better way to do it. It's called PREORDERS. Offer all figures, a year in advance, for preorder. Set a minimum order number for the fans. If there aren't enough preorders, the figure does not get made. That simple. No gimmicks, no bait and switch, no getting stuff you don't want.
The Achilles heel in their plan is a little thing called eBay. Why would I pay $150 for a sub when I can just get the occasional figure that I do want off of eBay? The price will be higher, but I won't have to pay $150, and regular shipping costs, to get it.

They lost me after they bungled up my sub this year. Cancelled, and still no Metron. And I felt strong armed into that one, as well. After JLU, I'm out! No more Matty!

They could solve ALL of their problems if...
1. They ditched Digital River. Not a single person on these boards could do their job anywhere as bad as DR has done and actually kept their job
2. Stop telling us what figures we want and let us vote on what figures you will make.
3. Take pre orders!

and, Im sorry. but outside of the Metal Men, what they showed at SDCC? BLEH
That Larfleeze looks horrible, compared to the DCD blackest night one. Samething with Atrocitus.
They want to lock you into the money, because if you could choose monthly, they would be sitting on alot of figures. Retail showed that. It wasnt the price of the figures, it was the choice and the craftsmanship. It just wasnt there.
If you dont think you can sell a figure at retail for $16, why do you think you can sell it as a sub for $26-28 shipped?

I had pretty much the same reaction that you guys had when I first read that update. It looks like Mattel has identified its "Magic Number" of customers who will buy ANYTHING and is just catering to them. To heck with the rest of us. They already lost me when they made Metron a subscriber exclusive (couldn't afford to get the sub for just one figure).
I'm sorry to say this, but I actually wish they don't get enough subscribers. That way, they will have to rethink this lazy "survival strategy for the economy of 2013." Heck, I wouldn't mind if they gave the license up and let someone who can actually get the figures that the FANS want in fans' hands, and not whatever bloody pops up in a subscription most of us can no longer afford.

And, Im not buying the whole "in this economy" thing. Alot of toys and unecessary hobbies are still thriving "in this economy".
its called laziness. Thats what they want us to buy. They are too lazy to put in the work necessary to give us things that we want to buy. its easier to slap "exclusive" or "hard to find" and hope that does the trick

Wait... is the Watchmen sub not a guarantee? I assumed it was going forward regardless of how many people sign up, just like with the MOTUC sub. I don't see a meter on the Watchmen subscription, but that press release makes it sound like it's as much on the fence as the DC sub.

Every sub could end up on the chopping block like Ghostbusters last year which didn't have a thermometer either. Regardless, there is a minimum for all the subs.
